Volume 11 Issue 6 Page 2 Breakpoint PBA Tiger Cup goes to China PBA Clash reaches 1.7 million views On December 23rd, during the PBA Clash when Marshall Kent won the PBA Clash over Dom Barrett. Fox Sports reported that there were over 1.7 million views during the telecast the PBA Clash featured the reigning player of the year Andrew Anderson, E.J. Tackett, Jason Belmonte. Jacob Bartroup, Anthony Simonsen, Jesper Sevennson, The clash was a inaugural event for the 2019 season. Fox Sports will pick up the action at the 2019 PBA Hall of Fame Classic on January 6th. It will be live with a top five stepladder finals. The winner will have a chance to earn another million dollars bonus. The championship match if a bowler bowls a 300 game. PBA fans can check their local listings to see what time the PBA Hall of Fame classic is on. The Fox Sports Network team consists of Rob Stone, Kimberly Pressler, and television color analyst 13 time PBA Hall of Famer Randy Pedersen. On December 28th the PBA announced for the first time in sixty years. The PBA will go to China to compete the Tiger Cup. This will make the fifth country the PBA will conduct a professional bowling tournament. It will be in an eighteen bowling establishment. The top pros of the season will be allowed to bowl at this inaugural event from November 8th to the 11th in Suzhou, China. This column is dedicated to Bowlers Journal International. I will be summarizing BJI articles periodically in the Josh Hyde s Bowling Newsletter. Last month Dennis Bergendorf wrote about the Tour Qualifying Round (TQR) and the Pro Tournament Qualifier (PTQ). At the beginning of the 2003-04 season, the PBA announced that they were going to have an exempt tour based on the points from the prior year. In the late 1970 s, bowling centers could not hold the number of entrants. The PBA invented (or borrowed from the PGA) the rabbit squad. This was an opportunity for new bowlers who had not yet made their mark on the PBA Tour to see if they could make it into a Pro Tournament. These PTQs consisted of 2- five game blocks with the top 7-8 bowlers advancing to the actual Tournament. The exempt tour idea started in the mid 1980 s. Bowlers like Walter Ray Williams Jr., Pete Weber, and Norm Duke had to bowl these PTQs in order to qualify when they were starting their bowling careers. There were a few tournaments that did not require a PTQ round like the PBA National / World Championship, the Tournament of Champions, the Showboat Invitational, and the US Open. In 2004-05 the PBA started the exempt tour where it was only 64 bowlers at every event. The PTQ was re-named the TQR, but they were essential the same. The prior year, Walter Ray Williams Jr. did not make it into the top 50 in points and it looked like Walter Ray would be required to compete in the TQR in order to be part of the PBA Tour. Walter had six Player of the Year awards and this treatment would be an insult. He Rabbit Run would end up winning two titles in the 2003-04 season to get his exempt status. At the end of a season, bowlers would be watching their points intently and hope that a new bowler would not win. In the article it did not mention the commissioner exemption. If the PBA was in Indianapolis or Medford, Mike Aulby or Marshall Holman could receive the commissioner exemption. It was a way for the PBA to allow in special people who would normally be excluded based on the exemption rules. Another example was Rick Steelsmith s ringing 10 in the 2006 World Championship. This appeared to take away his exemption for the next season but he was able to squeak in with a 17th place in the Great Lakes Classic. In 1979 the PBA invented the Pro Tournament Qualifier Split Column

Bowling Tournament Hierarchy Page 3 Over the next few months, the Josh Hyde Bowling Newsletter will describe the Bowling Tournament Hierarchy from the U.S. Open to the Amateur Sweeper. For the this month s Bowlology Column will be discussing scratch tournaments and the bowling tournament hierarchy. If a local association has enough bowlers that average between 190 and 240. They may a local scratch masters tournament. Having a local masters tournament might entice the higher average bowler to join a league so they can bowl in the local masters tournament. If the local association gives an entry into the regular USBC Masters or the State Masters Tournament. There will be a number of entries that will be bowling. Each state association has a state tournament. This tournament has three different tournaments that consist of doubles, singles, and teams events. However in the state tournament, bowlers will have to go up against lower average bowlers because they have handicap and scratch prize funds. If a state association offers a state masters tournament title. This is where tournament bowlers realize that they must bowl in a league within that state. Winning the state masters title will not guarantee a spot into the USBC Masters. There is a good probability that the winner will get a spot into the USBC Masters in order to qualify for this tournament. A bowler will have to obtain 190 average. A scratch tournament is not geography based tournament. This tournament may include a PBA Tour format with qualifying, match play and a stepladder final. This tournament might have a guaranteed first place check of $3,000 to $10,000. Some of top pros might enter because it s practice for the PBA and a chance at making more money prior to the PBA season. Tenth Frame Editorial 2018 Year in Review & 2019 Hopes and Dreams Page 5 In the 2018 season. Dom Barrett started off the year at the DHC Japan Invitational he would also win his second major at the 2018 U.S. Open. The PBA went back to the historic lanes at Riveria where Matt O Grady would win his first major. E.J Tackett would claim his tenth career PBA Tour Title at the Aurora Tournament. On the PBA50 side it looked like Walter Ray Williams Jr was going to claim his 20th Player of the Year honor however Michael Haugen, Jr had something to say about that. The PBA celebrated sixty years of greatest entity of bowling. The number one moment in PBA History went to Don Johnson 299 game at the 1970 Firestone Tournament of Champions. In the summer of 2018 FloSports took over Xtra Frame at the last event of the XtraFrame tour in Coldwater, Ohio would introduce a camera on every pair giving bowling fans a chance to follow their favorite bowler every game of the tournament. Jacob Butturff would once again lead the US Open by over 500 pins only failing to lose by one pin the championship match against Dom Barrett 207 to 206. However early in the year he would dominate the PBA60 Anniversary Classic to win his third career PBA Tour Title. Chris Barnes would be inducted in the PBA Hall of Fame. As he would join Bowlers like Mike Aulby, Dick Weber, as being on the first year ballot. In the thirty year PBA Hall of Fame. Another first happened as Don Mitchell became the first bowling center proprietor to be inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame. Ron Mohr who had a run on the PBA Senior Tour currently known as the PBA50 Tour would add his name to the greatest bowlers on Earth by becoming a PBA Hall of Famer. In the 2011 season he would have a lowest place standing of fourth. He would nearly dominate every statistical category on the PBA50 Tour season in that year. In the late summer and early Fall. The PBA made some pretty big news for bowling as Fox was going to be a major partner in broadcasting the PBA Tour for the 2019 season. It has been a long time since the PBA Membership has had a PBA Tour with going to different cities across the United States. I hope for the PBA to get bowling back a Prime Time air time spot as Fox is contributing to the PBA Tour with having four tournaments that a bowler will be able to win a $1 million bonus for throwing a perfect game in the championship match. This enables bowling fans to get excited about bowling again. Bowlers having an opportunity to win a $100,000 at the PBA Tour Finals and a number of live televised events including tenth WSOB at Allen Park, Michigan. This definitely creates PBA Members, bowlers, and bowling fans to put bowling back on the televised sports radar. The ultimate Title match would be Pete Weber versus Jason Belmonte in the 2019 USBC Masters. Both players would be competing for double digit in major titles. Pete Weber already has ten majors Belmonte has nine majors. However Weber has never won the Masters he came one pin shy when Mika Koviuemna beat him 236 to 235 in the 2000 Masters. Will Walter Ray Williams win his first Tournament of Champions title and become the oldest PBA Champion to win a major. Will the 2019 leading money leader win well over $1 million in prize money. This is definitely a new chapter in the PBA Tour. Bowling fans should be excited about the new Fox Sports deal instead of having the tape delayed of the WSOB. The animal pattern championship will be broadcast live. Last month s PBA Clash had a total of 1.7 million views. This should be an exciting preview of the upcoming season. Bowling fans can be disappointed in what Chris Peters, Mike Slade, and Rob Glasser did not do for the PBA. However almost 20 years later with the Fox Sports deal and FloBowling. How can Bowling fans not be enthusiastic about this new venture for the bowling industry. Imagine bowlers going to the local bowling center and seeing promotion posters and banners about the top stars of the PBA. These are my hopes and dreams for the 2019 Go-Bowling.com PBA Tour Season. 2019 PBA50 TOUR SCHEDULE April 14-17 PBA50 Johnny Petraglia BVL Open presented by Brunswick, Maple Countryside Lanes, Clearwater, Fla.
