2007 Pacific-10 Women s Soccer - November 27, 2007 3 AROUND THE LEAGUE As the only No. 1 seed remaining in the 2007 Division I Women s Soccer Championship, UCLA (19-1-2) is one of two Pac-10 teams remaining in the 64-team bracket... Also representing the Conference in the NCAA quarterfinals is USC (17-3-2), a No. 2 seed in its region... Top-seeded STANFORD (15-3-5) fell in the third round to Connecticut, 2-0 on Friday... The Cardinal joined No. 1 North Carolina and No. 1 Penn State as the three top-seeded teams defeated in sweet 16 action... Should UCLA and USC defeat their respective opponents, the two would meet up in the College Cup semifinals, guaranteeing a Pac-10 team in the national championship game for the third time in five years... In order to get there, however, the LA counterparts must deal with two impressive teams... SO F Lauren Cheney, the Pac-10 Player of the Year, scored the golden goal in the 98th minute to help the Bruins defeat No. 4 Virginia, 2-1 in overtime on Friday... The come-from-behind victory propelled UCLA to the quarterfinals in which it will face No. 2 Portland on Fri., Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. PT at Drake Stadium... Cheney, who s team was less than eight minutes away from elimination, leads the Conference with nine game-winning goals this season... With a total of three points on the night, Cheney broke the UCLA and Pac- 10 single-season scoring records, as she now has 55 points on the year... She entered the match with 52 points, tied with Traci Arkenberg who had that same total in 1997... The Bruins are in the NCAA quarterfinals for the fifth straight year and the eighth time in program history... The squad leads the Pac- 10 in points (179), goals (59), goals per game (2.68), assists (61), assists per game (2.77), and is tied for first in goals allowed (12)... For the first time in school history, USC has advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals where it will face No. 4 West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va., on Fri., Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. ET... Further, with 17 wins on the season, the 2007 squad has set the USC single-season record for wins, and it will look to better that number this weekend... FR D Kasey Johnson scored her first career goal with a header off a free kick from JR MF Ashley Nick in the 48th minute of action to propel USC to the 1-0 shutout of No. 3 Florida on Saturday... This season marks USC s ninth trip to the NCAA Tournament, where it has posted an 8-8 overall record... The Trojans faced eight NCAA Tournament teams this season, recording a 4-2-2 record against those squads (beating Georgia, Oakland, Portland and California; tying Tennessee and Stanford; and falling to Indiana and top-seeded UCLA)... The Women of Troy lead the Pac-10 in shots (384), shutouts (13), goals against average (0.53), corners (128), while tied for first in goals allowed (12). Pac-10 Women s Soccer All-Conference Honors UCLA s CHENEY NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR STANFORD s PRESS NAMED FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR UCLA s ELLIS NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE YEAR -- LAUREN CHENEY, UCLA Cheney, a 5-10 sophomore forward from Indianapolis, Ind., becomes the fourth UCLA player to garner Player of the Year honors, and the first since Nandi Pryce (2003). Having helped guide her team to a fifth-straight Pac-10 championship and a 19-1-2 overall record, Cheney finished the regular season leading the Conference in points (20), goals (20) and assists (9), while leading the nation in points per game (2.58) and ranking second in goals per game (1.053). Cheney has tallied nine game-winning goals this season (first in the Pac-10) and set the single-game season-high by totaling eight points on four goals in a 6-0 win over Hawaii. A three-time Pac-10 Player of the Week honoree, Cheney became just the second player in Conference history to earn the accolade three times in a season. She was also named the Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Year. PAC-10 FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR -- CHRISTEN PRESS, STANFORD Press, a 5-7 forward from Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., becomes the third Stanford player to garner Freshman of the Year honors, and the first since Marcie Ward (2000). Having played in 18 regular-season games this season, she took 49 shots (2.72), scored six goals (0.33) and added five assists (0.28) to rank 10th in the Pac-10 in all three categories. Press, who helped guide her team to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and a 15-3-5 overall record, totaled 17 points through the regular season, good enough to rank seventh in the league. PAC-10 COACH OF THE YEAR -- JILLIAN ELLIS, UCLA With the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation, UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis earns her second Pac-10 Coach of the Year award, having won the honor in 2003, as well. The 2007 UCLA squad lost its first game of the season, but rattled off 16 wins and two ties to remain unbeaten through its final 18 regular-season games. With a perfect 9-0-0 mark in Pac-10 games, UCLA clinched its fifth-straight Conference championship and the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In addition, UCLA has become the first team in Pac- 10 history to win five consecutive Pac-10 titles. Ellis, who is in her ninth year at the helm of the Bruin program, has guided her teams to five appearances in the NCAA College Cup, including four in a row from 2003-06. FIRST TEAM Name Pos... Year.
