NEXT MATCH IS HELL FIRE 2017 SEPTEMBER 22nd-24th! CHECK US OUT ON FACEBOOK! September, 2017 Volume 9, Issue 9 HELL FIRE 2017 FORECAST: Cool Temps and Hot Shooting!!! Gumbo Meet-and-Greet Friday Nite to Kick Off a Weekend of Fun HELL FIRE 2017: You know, normally as we get the range ready for Hell Fire there are three temperatures hot, hotter, and too durned hot!! Fortunately, this year has been relatively mild and the summer heat seems to have broken about 3 weeks early. That may account for the increase in entries this year. So far (and there is still time to come join us!), we are up over 20% from last year and that isn't counting all of you last minute types who are certainly welcome. All in all, it is shaping up to be another great time. We will be kicking thing off on Friday the 22nd with the side matches - as always an eclectic mix of standard and surprising competitions. The Wild Bunch match will be on Friday as well. We could use some help running the side matches so let us know if you are available. Another under rated feature of Hell Fire matches is the Gumbo Meetand-Greet on Friday night. We have a really comfortable ranch house to visit in and all are invited to bring a gumbo, soup, or house specialty for a pot-luck style supper. Be sure to come join in the fun. HANGIN' AT COYOTE CREEK: We received the entry form for the 2017 Louisiana State SASS Championships recently. It is again hosted by the Bayou Bounty Hunters down in Amite. I have included a copy at the end of the Gazette so y'all can print one off and send it in. Don't delay, that November date will get here quicker than you think. SEPTEMBER MATCH RESULTS: That picture to the right is getting to be a regular occurrence, isn't it? Well, both father and daughter shot really well last weekend. Lily did let me down, though. She had been doing a great job of keeping me out of the top 5 and that mandatory Regulator category. What happened, girl? We have had some new shooters come out the past couple of months. Be sure to extend a big welcome to Stumpjumper, Dabster Dave, and Stacie Belle. They seemed a little nervous to leave the Greenhorn category behind this month, but it was great to see them get better and better times on each stage. They are definitely the kind of folks that are a pleasure to shoot with. - Hightower Lily and Slick were the Overall Men's and Ladies' winners at the September monthly match. At lease SOMEONE is happy about it!
THIS MONTH IN WESTERN HISTORY September 12, 1874- Near the Washita River in the Texas Panhandle- While trying to deliver mail dispatches from McClellan Creek to Fort Supply, Billy Dixon, Amos Chapman, and Sergeant Zachariah T. Woodall, Private Peter Roth, Private John Harrington, Private George W. Smith, wake on this date in 1874 to find themselves surrounded by a hundred Kiowas and Comanches near the Washita River in Hemphill County, Texs, and are forced to engage in what became known as the Battle of Buffalo Waller. The men took refuge in a hollow in the ground created by rolling buffalos. The men would be rescued three days later by troops, after suffering just one casualty.
