President s Message Ed Gillen Ah, Fall! The cool mornings, seeing your breath as the leaves change and fall... wait, say, what? I was recently reminded of how nice it was to run in cool weather on a trip 'back north'. It was nice to see old running friends and catch up on what's new in the various running groups my wife and I belonged to when we lived in Albany. We then went from 53 degrees and no humidity to 76 degrees and UGH on our first run back in FL but... we are so grateful to be HOME and to be back to our running club - Zoomers. Fall is a very busy month for running especially in FL. Tons of races to choose from. We hope you have chosen our own TRICK or TROT 5K Trail Run on October 22nd. If you are on Facebook, please share the following link with your friends (https://runsignup.com/ Race/FL/Englewood/TrickorTrot5KTrailRun I hope you mark your calendar for our 3rd Annual Turkey Raffle Run on Sunday, November 20th (see: http://zoomersrun.com/event/zoomers-3rd-annual-turkey-raffle-run ) Fall is also busy time for Zoomers as we have our annual election, the adult race series for 2016 is in its home stretch and we help our friends by volunteering at a number of events (Myakka Half/5k, Turkey Trot, Frosty 5k) Be safe and here's hoping your training, whether biking, running, swimming or all three goes well. See you at the finish line. 3 Zoomersrun.com

Scott Geezil By Grace Gowans Training hard. That s how Scott started for his swim. The goal? To swim 9.2 miles by himself. He d wake at 4 am to swim from 5:15 am to 7:00 am. That s over 5,000 yards. He d also cross train on other days. Biking or spin class was what Scott would choose to do, but he enjoyed doing group classes like TRX, body pump. But running was his weak spot. He isn t sure if he can get any faster. But he loves sports. When he was growing up he played semi-pro football, ice hockey, basketball, baseball you name it, he probably played it. He just likes to compete. But race day takes him to the next level. The main reason he exercises now if because of his chronic pain issues. Scott has a titanium plate in his neck, had a rotator cuff surgery on my shoulder. Multiple levels of disk disease. Bulging disk in my lower back, had both knees scoped for miniscus tears, plus he has arthritis in both of them. And we can t forget the foot issues. He was on pain meds for a few years and hated the way they made him feel. So he left them. Started swimming again. Did his first triathlon at Englewood YMCA. Did a relay (the swim portion of it). And then he said, why not do the whole thing? He did and came in first place in his age group. After that, Scott was hooked. But swimming has always been his favorite. So the past few years he did the Alligator Lighthouse Swim as part of the relay teams. Then, of course, he said, why not do it solo? And when he swims, he wants to win. No matter if its ¼, ½, or a 9 mile swim. His goal was to do it under 5 hours and he did: 4:55:08. Coming in first place in his age group was an added bonus. The conditions were great except for the jellyfish (those who have done that swim know EXACTLY what I m talking about!). Although he likes doing the swim by himself, he will probably go back to relays, he says they re more fun. That s a little bit about Scott Geezil, feel free to say hello to him! And of course, ask what sports he s done as well, I m sure he has a list J Happy running! 5 Zoomersrun.com

PAGE 16 October Birthdays!! Libra: September 23 October 22 Element: Air Symbol: The Scales Life Pursuit: To be consistent Secret Desire: To live an easy and uncomplicated life Unfortunately, your desire to be consistent and to live an easy life makes you vulnerable to running consistently slow splits. Those splits might be easy and you will have plenty of your element (Air) to fill your lungs at these slow paces, but you need to use your scales to weigh the benefits of an easy pace vs the pain of running faster. Take a chance and you will see that consistently fast is better than consistently slow. 10/2 10/3 10/3 10/4 10/4 10/4 10/5 10/5 10/6 10/11 10/13 10/13 10/14 10/14 10/15 10/16 10/16 10/17 Jacqueline Tess Julian Mary Lucia Tammi Luke Shane Todd Andrea Dee Elizabeth Dara Holli Rob Richard Bracken Natasha Conniff Madeya Ramirez Bonetz Schatteleyn Harvey Wenzel Otway Carpenter Wigert Stout Staugler Sorah Fleming Sanders Caluori Yingling Auriemma 10/18 10/18 10/19 10/20 10/20 10/21 10/22 10/23 10/23 10/24 10/25 10/25 10/25 10/26 10/26 10/26 10/27 Leyah Rachel Stacey Mal Dorina Debbie Gail Seth Fred Anita Diana Jordan Samantha Gary James Mary Ann Toni FrankRose Holmes Miller Daetz Williamson Marinari Dobbs Beiner Frank Squires Prinner Prinner Ettinger Coogan Keller Ivankovic 16 Zoomersrun.com THE FINISH LINE Scorpio: October 23 November 21 Element: Water Symbol: The Scorpion Life Pursuit: To survive against all opposition Secret Desire: To triumph Your element is water and you will need plenty of it if you are to survive your next road race. Even though it is October, it s still hot out there and a nice salad for dinner is sometimes just the thing you need, especially on busy school nights. This salad has become my all time favorite, hope you enjoy!! From the recipe book: Real Fit Kitchen by Tara Mardigan, R.D and Kate Weiler, C.H.C Rainbow Chard Salad This colorful salad impresses even the pickiest vegetable eaters. Chard is a great source of antioxidant phytonutrients. Once phytonutrient group found in chard is called betalains which have been shown to provide significant antioxidant, anti-inflammaroty, and detoxification support. Though exercise is healthy for you, it is a stressor to the body, so it is important to help support detoxification through foods like swiss chard. For the salad: For the Dressing: 6 cups swiss chard, red, green or rainbow, 2 TBSP unfiltered, apple cider vinegar sliced into thin ribbons 1 TBSP Pure Maple Syrup 2 oranges, peeled and chopped 2 TBSP olive oil 1 small onion, chopped 1/3 tsp sea salt 1 apple, chopped 1/3 black pepper 1/2 cup raw pecans 1/8 turmeric powder 1/2 cup raw pepitas 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper 3 TBSP dried cherries 1/3 cup pomegranate seeds Combine all salad ingredients in a large salad bowl. Combine all ingrediets for the dressing in a small bowl or bottle and mix together. Pour dressing on salad and toss. TIP: Salad will stay fresh in fridge without the dressing. Dress salad right before you eat. 17 Zoomersrun.com
