U21 Men s Pan Am Cup Set to Begin in Canada GATINEAU, CANADA : The U21 Men s Pan Am Cup is ready to begin tomorrow, June 23, at the Centre Sportif de Gatineau, in Quebec, Canada. Matches begin on Tuesday, with El Salvador facing the tournament's top-ranked Brazil at 4 pm. Canada s first match is 8 pm, also on the 23rd, against Mexico; with Barbados taking on the U.S. at 6 pm. Seven teams will compete in two pools. Medal rounds will be held on the weekend. Coaches quotes: John Stuart, head coach of Barbados: We are looking forward to this level of competition. It is very important for our players to have this experience. The tournament is very important for our team. Leonardo Carvalho, head coach of Brazil: This is our first international competition of the year. We have been preparing for four weeks. We expect the team to grow and improve their level of play as the competition progresses. In every official competition, Brazil is always aiming for the gold. This generation is expected to make it to the top national squad after the 2016 Olympic Games. John Barrett, head coach of Canada: We have had a good base of training for three weeks, after a selection camp, so the base is starting to be there. The competition is going to be excellent, and it leads us into a very competitive summer, which culminates at the World Junior Championships in Mexico in September. We re excited to be competing here in Canada, with the best young men we have it s a great opportunity for all of us. Daniel Nejamkin, head coach of Chile : We came here to perform at our best against top class teams like Brazil, the US and Canada. We wish to play the semifinals. We know it would a difficult goal to attain because we have two strong teams in our Pool like Canada and Mexico. This group has given a lot of satisfaction to Chile. I led them to the U19 World Championships in 2013, the first global event for Chile since 1985. We have a lot hope on this team. Ricardo Rivera, head coach of El Salvador : Our team is very motivated. We have worked hard to perform at our best here. We understand the challenge ahead of us, playing against two of the best teams in the tournament. That gives us extra motivation. We have been preparing for a year. The Cup
has provided us with an opportunity to play high level games on an annual basis. We look forward to our first game with Brazil in many years. I am sure they should combine Dan Friend, head coach of the United States: We have been training for the last 12 days in Lake Placid, New York, and brought 21 guys together and are down to 12 now. The group is excited to compete at the Pan Am Cup and be in Canada. We have a few that were on the team last and a few new guys. They have the opportunity to grow in this tournament and put ourselves in the position to hopefully get in to the World Championships. If we get the chance to play Canada again it would be exciting because it was a barn-burner last time.
