. 0-0-0 (0S) This is a warm-up drill to begin a practice. The goal is to get 0 sets across the net in a row, followed by 0 down balls in a row across, followed by 0 back row attacks in a row. Groups of to 6 players. Divide equally directly across the net from each other, / per side across from each other. Begin with a toss over the net to other group. Set the ball to partner at the net, they set back to partner and then set the ball over. That side then rotates, passer to setter and setter to passer, on their side. Other side repeats same pattern until 0 sets over collectively is achieved. Next is 0 down balls in a row. Pass, set, standing down ball. Next is 0 backrow attacks. Pass, set, jump and swing. Often modified to not be in a row, but must have two contacts on other side to count towards the 0. The goal is to complete all sets of 0 in under 0 minutes. During the 0 sets, below the height of the antenna and not directly set or hit to other group when sending a ball over, hit slightly off to their sides. Focus on proper footwork and technique, even though the drill is very basic. Stress importance of control and not power.
. CONTINUOUS PEPPER Level: Advanced This is a full team drill that focuses on control and how to beat frustration. There are 5 players on the court per side. Others waiting to rotate on. Rotate clockwise after every contact that sends the ball over the net. Hitters should be swinging at 70% and with the purpose of getting the ball to a player. Setters can either stay or rotate with everyone else. The goal is 0 balls over the net in a row that came off a swing. Keeping the ball alive with a pass over is simply a wash. Arm swings are high with good wrist snap to players on opposite side. Easy passes are put square onto setters hands. Rotating quickly to spot as ball often falls in a transition. Monitoring player frustration. 6
. COACH DEFENSE LINE This drill allows a coach to provide consistent shots for players to get reps at digging. Players should form one line about 0 away from the coach and one target next to the coach. Each player gets three balls. Tip, Chase Down, and cross court shot into right back. Not swinging out to balls. Strong fingers and pushing back when ball is at their head. If it s at their face, working on a stacked hand gator shot.
. STAR DRILL This drill is to work on the footwork of shuffling backwards and staying open to the court as one shifts. One player goes at a time with a coach toss. Player starts at the 0 line and passes short ball. They when work around the court passing sideline, back corner, back midline, other back corner, and other side line. Drill should move quick to encourage players are hustling through the spots. Shuffling backwards and not back pedaling. Hips open to the court. Using platform to pass the ball and not hands. Correct angle on platform if ball isn t taken midline. 5 6
5 BALL WASH This drill is to work on team defense and free ball converting. Split in 6 s Coaches each begin with bowled balls over the net, five each. After the team is passing and looking sharp, then enter downballs and eventually serves. Ensure players are shifting correctly for perimeter defense. Actively talking and comunicating. Enter balls quickly.
6. PIN - FULL DEFENSE Level: Intermediate This drill is focused on a full 6 person defense shifting and covering correctly. This is a good chance to work on a defense adjusting for tips, balls past the antenna, and defensive schemes. Two pin hitters stand on boxes on one side of the net and six players setup base defense on the other side. Pin hitters alternate in a random order hitting down balls, tipping, or hitting shots into the defense. The defense needs to get 0 ups and hits over the net and then rotate. Rotate players and lineups accordingly. Hit/tip at all players and repeat hits that beat defensive players. Understand strong lineups and player matchups. Reading hitters shoulders and elbow to determine where ball is going. Backrow wings and middle back are crossing on defense. Middle blocker is sealing blocks on pins.
