The Panthers dropped their third game in a row this past Tuesday after falling on the road to conference leading Murray State by a score of 93-67. Sophomore forward Rachel Galligan s 18.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks a game are tops on EIU s statistical list. Freshman guard Jessica Huffman, this week s OVC Player and Freshman of the Week, is second on the team at 18.1 points per game, while she leads the Panthers at four assists per game. The Panthers are guided by third-year head coach Brady Sallee, who has amassed a 25-45 record at the Charleston, Ill., school. SERIES HISTORY Southeast holds a 16-8 advantage in the all-time series with EIU. The Redhawks have won seven of the last eight meetings in the series, including a 4-0 record at the Show Me Center. Both teams split last season s series with the home team winning on their respective courts. Southeast claimed an 84-76 victory over the Panthers at the SMC last February behind a 13-point performance of then-freshman reserve Sonya Daugherty. REDHAWKS VS. Lovelady has been on a roll in the scoring department for Southeast as she has produced double-digit scoring efforts in the last seven games, including 16 points Tuesday night at Eastern Kentucky. She continued that trend by contributing 12 points in the Redhawks home win over Martin Methodist on Dec. 22. Lovelady has averaged 13.2 points a game in Southeast s last five contests. REDHAWKS TO RAISE THE BANNERS Southeast will raise the banners from last season s OVC regularseason and tournament championships and NCAA Tournament berth at the Show Me Center on Jan. 20. The Redhawks have outscored their opponents reserves by an average of 3.8 points a game (19.5-15.7). Junior Missy Whitney has been the biggest contributor as she has averaged 12 points a game in five games as the team s sixth woman off the bench. Sophomore Sonya Daugherty has also been a key contributor off the bench by scoring 7.7 points a game in seven contests as a reserve. Joiceline Thesing added 13 points for her second highest double-digit scoring total this season. Ashley Lovelady, Tarina Nixon and Heather Diebold each contributed 12 points, while Rachel Blunt closed the scoring with 10 points. It marked the first time that Southeast had four or more players to score in double digits since five players accomplished the feat against Lyon College on Nov. 23, 2004. GATER IS NO. 1 IN DIVISION I Prior to starting the season last month, senior center Lachelle Gater Lyles stated that one of her goals this season was to lead the nation in rebounding. The 6-2 Chicago native has accomplished this feat after averaging a staggering 18.3 caroms per contest over Southeast s last five games, posted a game-high 23 rebounds against Martin Methodist last week. She tallied a career-best 32 rebounds at Tennessee State earlier this month. REDHAWKS IN THE OVC STANDINGS Several members of the Southeast women s basketball team were recognized in this week s OVC overall stat rankings, which was released on Dec. 30. Senior Lachelle Lyles leads the conference in several categories, including total rebounds (195 16.3 rpg), offensive rebounds (86 7.2 orpg) and defensive rebounds (109 9.1 drpg). Senior Joiceline Thesing is second in the OVC with a 1.4 block per game average (17). Junior Missy Whitney is ranked fifth in three-point percentage (12-of-26 -.462) and total rebounds (96 8.0 rpg), while sixth in free throw percentage (54-of- 68 -.794). Fellow junior Ashley Lovelady is third in minutes played (393 32.8). As a team, Southeast ranks in the top ten among the OVC leaders in several categories, including rebounding margin (1st - + 9.3) and blocked shots (2nd - 4.40 bpg). Lost 1 REDHAWKS INK TWO IN EARLY SIGNING PERIOD Southeast women s basketball announced the signing of Tori Fite and Lauren Sharpe to National Letters of Intent to compete for the Redhawks for the 2007-08 season as part of the NCAA s Early Signing Period on Nov. 8. Fite, a native from Massillion, Ohio, is entering her senior season at Perry High School, where she averaged 16 points and six assists per game in 2005-06 under head coach Mark Randulic. Sharpe averaged 16 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists last season for Tippecanoe High School. She is coached by Todd Varvel. Sharpe led the state of Ohio with 207 steals and ranks sixth all-time in state history for career steals. BALANCE AND OPTIONS Six Southeast players recorded double-digit scoring games against Lambuth, led by a pair of 15-point efforts from junior Ashley Lovelady and sophomore Tarina Nixon. Senior Lachelle Lyles and sophomore Sonya Daugherty added 13 points with Lyles posting a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior Missy Whitney finished with 11 points and sophomore Rachel Blunt tallied. 10. SOUTHEAST SELECTED FIFTH IN OVC POLL Southeast was been picked to finish fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference s preseason poll, which was compiled by the conference s head coaches and sports information directors and released on Oct. 11. Last season, the Redhawks were selected second in the annual poll and captured the conference regular-season and tournament titles. Samford was picked as the favorite to win this season s OVC crown with 189 points. ISHEE NAMED ACTING HEAD COACH FOR REMAINDER OF THE SEASON Southeast Missouri State athletic director Don Kaverman announced on Dec. 7 that current assistant coach John Ishee will serve as the team s acting head coach for the remainder of the 2006-07 season following the resignation of former head coach B.J. Smith, effective Dec. 1. Prior to Southeast, Ishee has compiled a career coaching record of 31-21 at Life University (Ga.) and the University of New Mexico- Highlands. Last season, Ishee guided NMH to a 12-14 record.
