News MARY GEIST SERVICE AWARD Homecoming Week Bishop Hartley High School honored three members of the Hartley Community, Tuesday, October 4, with the presentation of the Mary Geist Service Award to Pamela and John Gregory and Bernie Scanlon. Mr. and Mrs. Gregory have sent four children to Bishop Hartley, the youngest of whom will graduate with the class of 2017. Mr. Scanlon is a friend of the school community. The Mary Geist Award is given annually during Catholic Schools Week to individuals who have been of exemplary service to the school and its extended community. Geist was extremely active in service to her church and to Bishop Hartley, coming to Hartley as a volunteer in the early 1970s after her retirement and serving until her death in 2003. She was the first recipient of the award in 2000. Mr. and Mrs. Gregory have been active members of the Hartley House Parent Organization and have coordinated efforts for the teacher appreciation breakfast held annually during Catholic Schools Week. They have also been active volunteers with various extracurricular activities in which their children took part. Mr. Scanlon has helped with the Bishop Hartley In the Know program and gave countless hours of service and assistance during the renovation of the school library during the summer of 2015. Juniors will take the PSAT, a practice test for the SAT which they take for college admissions later this year and early next year as seniors. However, this particular test for the junior class also serves as the qualifying test for National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students for the Class of 2018. Because of the PSAT's importance, sophomores will also take the PSAT as a practice for next year. Freshmen will take the ACT Aspire, a part of the ACT family of tests. It follows the same format of the four academic sections found on the ACT. Bishop Hartley uses this test as part of an effort to strengthen students' performances on these important college entrance examinations.
