Penguin Basketball Association Newsletter February 2013 PENGUIN V's ULVERSTONE (Penguin Stadium) 1st March, 2013 (Games start at 7pm, get there early to get a good seat) There's nothing like a bit of club rivalry to keep things interesting! The Penguin/Ulverstone tussles have been the things that legends are made of. We are hoping that this year will cement the Penguin Blues as the top club. We have the teams that keep you on the edge of your seat!! So far we've had a win on the siren; a loss after the siren; an overtime; a triple overtime and a six point loss that s five of the six games played so far. The Lighthouse Classic tournament was the first time this year that the clubs have met, and it is fair to say that it has set up Friday night as a game that could go either way! The Coastal Electronics Men's team defeated Ulverstone and Wynyard during the tournament dismissing last years poor NWBU result and reinventing Penguin as a team not to be underestimated! The Lanes IGA Lady's Blues team are tough and don't give up or let a game go easily! Their performance against Burnie for the win was proof of their never give up attitude. The Lady Blues will go hard for the whole 4 quarters and the Ulverstone girls will have a real battle on their hands. Remember...a club's supporters are just as important as the teams. PBA are keen to push our membership numbers to levels never seen before! Do yourself a favour, take the opportunity to sign up at this game! There will be a raffle running with some GREAT prizes on offer. So be sure and secure yourself a ticket or two! We LOVE our LOUD AND PROUD supporters and encourage you to cheer your teams on! We will have THUNDER STICKS available for purchase at this round!! They will be available at the door for $1.00 a set! It's a GREAT way to get the kids involved! Good luck to both of our teams, we know you'll do us proud. Join us in the clubrooms bar after the game for a drink.

Fundraising Fundraising is an HUGE part of the club and without it we would not function as a successful association. This year has started off with a bang! At our first home game Lenny and Zac put on the not so hard sell and managed to recruit lots of new members. Our Spin the Wheel held in the clubroom after the game was hugely successful...we managed to raise $165 profit off just 4 spins! The winners were: Alan Applebee, Donna Miller, Dave Guard, Jamie Hayward Remember, EVERYONE is welcome for drinks in the clubrooms after home games! All bar profits go back into the club! So...what happens at the club...stays at the club! Lighthouse Classic - 4th-6th February, 2013 Senior Men's Report How soon the Basketball Season rolls around again! After losing 7 players and a wealth of experience from last year s team, we did not know what the weekend would bring. We ended up being extremely satisfied with the results still room for improvement but for our first games of the year it was very positive. While we just missed out on a finals berth, we definitely proved that we would be a hard team to beat in the 2013 season. With wins over both Ulverstone & Wynyard (both these teams played finals in 2012) during the tournament, the team realised that by having a good pre-season, the addition of an import player and other new faces and with continued hard work that the season ahead look promising. We hope to take all this into our NWBU season. American recruit Zac White, has proven that not only will be an extremely valuable player and a nice guy but also a crowd pleaser with his athleticism, huge blocks and awesome dunks! In 2013, the Penguin Men s program welcomes the arrival of new players Zac White, Robbie Fox & David Ridderhof, we retain our core group of senior players in Mark Peircy, Bryan Van Wyk, Kurt Williams, Nic Fox, James Deegan, Thomas Guard, Mathew Kinch & Brent Jones, along with the youthful enthusiasm of Josh Kinch, Corey Enright & Fraser Eaton. LIGHTHOUSE CLASSIC Lanes IGA Supermarket Lady Blues Report Our Senior women's team started on the Friday night with a game against last years fellow NWBU Preliminary finalist Devonport. Although the team worked hard, sadly, they came away with a 20 point loss. Saturday saw the girls take on the State U18 team, they competed strongly with glimpses of good things to come. Another 20+ point loss wasn't indicative of the performance the night before. The last pool game was between Hobart team the Grenadiers and the continuing improvement became evident with the team skipping out to a 20 point lead before half time. Even though the girls started to run out of steam, they dug deep to win by two points. Winning 1 of 3 games placed the team third in their pool and a crossover game on Sunday against Latrobe. The girls blew Latrobe away jumping to an early 20 point lead. Unlike the previous day they continued to work hard and finished with a 55-41 victory. The tournament was a success and the two grand finalists were Devonport and the State U18's who were in the same pool as our team. Our women's team has shown the rest of the league that they are not to be underestimated and are capable of great things.
