1 STEWARDS REPORT Shoalhaven City Turf Club ARCHER RACECOURSE Sunday 26 February 2017 Weather: Overcast Track: Soft (6) Rail: +3 Metres 1200m 350m, Cutaway Applies, True Remainder Penetrometer: N/A STEWARDS: T J Vassallo (Chairman), T A McDonald & R W Livingstone RACE 1: Workforce XS 3YO Maiden Handicap 1200m Engaging When questioned B El-Issa explained that after the gelding was slowly away he rode the horse along in the early stages to take up a prominent position however the horse failed to muster speed and ultimately, he was able to obtain a position with cover. He added Engaging was not entirely comfortable on the soft track surface. He added in his view the horse may benefit from the addition of a tongue-tie. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Onemore Warrior Began awkwardly and then laid out under pressure over the final 200m. Smoke of Luck Slowly away. Supreme Gigi Raced wide without cover throughout. Usena Had some difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn. Caisson Platoon Slowly away. Alte Pete Shifted its near hind plate during the preliminary and when the horse was unable to have the plate re-fitted due to it being fractious and the farrier being unable to remove the off side hind plate again due to the horse being fractious, the filly was a late withdrawal at 1.59pm. 2 Biscuit Raced keenly in the early and middle stages and got its head up and refused to settle when being steadied off heels. Frontiersman Bumped by Winkler on jumping. Bribe The Witness When questioned regarding the performance of the horse T Wolfgram advised that the intention was to have the horse ridden prominently. He added however that Bribe The Witness, which was standing awkwardly, missed the start (3L) and then was reluctant to muster speed despite being ridden along. He added consequently he was obliged to race towards the rear of the field and after travelling well for a short distance then commenced to over race when the tempo steadied in the middle stages. He added that he commenced to improve from the 600m however after initially making some ground Bribe The Witness then failed to run on thereafter. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr G Portelli was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse in regards to its barrier manners. Burrangong Slowly away. Tearaway Charlie Near the 600m was bumped and carried wider by First Courier. Dripping Carats Underwent a veterinary examination after being fractious en route to the course and was cleared to start. Was slowly away and then was crowded on jumping between Ardelite and Mr Mile, both of which shifted ground. Whilst stewards were satisfied that App J Devrimol s failure to ride his mount out over the concluding stages had not affected his finishing position he was nonetheless reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out to the finish. Ellie Beach Was steadied and shifted back in across runners in the early stages. Orpentiva Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. When questioned regarding the apparent improved performance trainer Ms W Haynes explained the horse had worked well leading into all of its race starts. She added that in her view the main reason for the improved performance was that the horse appreciated the drop in grade, coupled with the application of Blinkers and the increased distance of today s race. Your Place or Mine Slowly away. Winkler (NZ) Began awkwardly and made contact with Frontiersman resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. After being crossed by Burrangong near the 1300m, commenced to overrace and got its head up, shifted out resulting in Frontiersman and Tearaway Charlie being buffeted for room. Continued to over race thereafter and refused to settle. RACE 3: Soilco/Foster Emery Memorial Maiden Plate 1100m Damagic Slowly away. App B McDougall reported that his mount hung in throughout. Tangarra Express Slowly away. Binary Jewel Slowly away.
3 Sweet Art Began awkwardly. Abundant Near the 900m was briefly crowded for room by Damagic which was taken in by Repentant which after laying in then was taken in by Imposition. Trainer Mr A Eastcott advised that the mare had bled from both nostrils during the running of the race. As this was the first occasion that Abundant had bled the mare will now incur the mandatory 3 month ban from racing. RACE 4: Baimed Physiotherapy Clinics Class 1 Handicap 1000m Smokey s Joy Began awkwardly and then was held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. Perash Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. Dolly s Due Trainer Ms M Ritchie was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse which proved reluctant to ride to the barriers. Halliday Road Raced wide and without cover throughout. When questioned J Taylor advised that her instructions were to have the horse in a prominent position. She added that from her wide barrier she endeavoured to ride forward however her mount did not have sufficient speed to cross and when Kentucky Angel was unable to obtain a two wide position to her inside and shifted out rounding the first turn she was then caught wide thereafter. J Taylor advised that she had contemplated easing and not endeavouring to continue riding forward however bearing in mind her instructions she continued to attempt to find a position on pace. J Taylor added that Halliday Road then laid in throughout. Case Slowly away. Force The Issue Near the 600m laid out towards the heels of Perash and was steadied. Canny Palance When questioned K O Hara advised that in her view the horse may not have backed up from its last start 3 rd at Goulburn on 18 February 17 and also in her view was also not suited by the prevailing track conditions where she felt horses racing back in the field have not been able to make ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. RACE 5: Shoalhaven Rugby Club Season Launch Benchmark 60 Handicap 1400m Art of Excellence Began awkwardly. Montiro Slowly away. From Pentridge On arrival at the barriers was found to have some blood in its mount from a minor wound to its lip. Underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Became awkward on the running rail linking up with the course proper near the 1200m. RACE 6: Baker, Urquhart, Calcraft Memorial Class 2 Handicap 1200m Virgilio When questioned R Brewer advised that his instructions had been to be positive on the horse. He added that his mount began well and he rode forward in accordance with his instructions and when it appeared that Winterland was going to cross and lead he anticipated he would settle outside that horse. He added when Motivate and Winterland held their
4 positions and Winterland did not cross he attempted to restrain and endeavoured to attempt to obtain the position one out and one back trailing Winterland. He added that when Millenium Rose then improved to his inside he was then left racing wide without cover for the remainder of the race. When questioned as to whether or not there was an option for him to continue pressing forward and attempt to cross WInterland and Motivate R Brewer advised that as he felt the tempo was genuine he felt that he would have to make too much use of his mount and for reason he elected to ease and attempt to find a trailing position. In Mum s Memory Hung out rounding the first turn. Lady Wynette Slowly away and then raced keenly in the early and middle stages and got its head up. Kawaikini Raced keenly in the early stages. Millennium Rose A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to have bled from both nostrils for the first time. Trainer Mr M Smith was advised that the horse would now incur the mandatory 3 month ban from racing. Run The Red Raced wide without cover throughout. RACE 7: SRFC Digger Day Match July 15 Benchmark 55 Handicap 1600m Seven Reasons Slowly away. A post-race veterinary examination of the horse which was under pressure from the 800m, weakened noticeably and was beaten 26 3/4L revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr B Borham was advised that Seven Reasons would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to being permitted to start in a race again. Eerised Slowly away and then hung in when under pressure in the straight and shifted ground. All Kool As B El-Issa was ruled unfit to fulfil his engagement by the club s medical officer permission was granted for P Wells to be substituted. Strada Time After riding in Race 4, T Wolfgram reported that he had sustained an injury to left knee. J Penza was substituted. T Wolfgram was advised that he would be required to furnish a medical clearance prior to riding again. Von Braun Trainer Mr J Steinmetz was advised that a final warning would be placed on the horse which was fractious in the enclosure and then reared on a number of occasions and proved difficult to ride. Thunder Cove Began awkwardly and got its head up. Eased away from heels shortly after the start when crowded by Eerised (App J Van Overmire) which shifted in when not quite clear. App Overmire was advised to exercise more care. Raced keenly in the middle stages and got its head up. General. App J Van Overmeire was spoken to relative to his non-attendance at Apprentice School on 24 February 2017. App Overmeire was reprimanded under LR 64. In issuing a reprimand stewards were mindful that App Overmeire had not been spoken to regarding his non-
5 attendance previously. App Overmeire was advised that should he fail to attend apprentice school as required in the future without first obtaining permission action may be taken against his license.
