ONE DAY 4-H- SATURDAY OCT 8th One day 4-H is one day for all the 4-H members, parents, leaders, and volunteers to step out into their communities and county and say thank you by giving back for more than 103 years of support to 4-H in Texas. This day of community service is whatever each 4-H members, club, or county 4-H Program wants it to be. It could be as simple as picking up trash and mowing the lawn for senior citizens to elaborate as hosting a 5K Walk/Run and raising money for a cause. How do you participate? 4-H members and their clubs/county programs should start now on identifying and planning a community service project. Work to secure all the necessary supplies/equipment/resources to get the project done. Advertise/market your project to local media and others in the community so they will know the difference you, and 4-H, is making. Archer County 4-H clubs are busy making plans to participate. 4-H members will have fun working together to make the best even better! NATIONAL 4-H WEEK OCTOBER 2-8, 2016 Incoming Freshman This is the start of a new chapter in your book of life, I hope that you take full advantage of it. Within this chapter you will encounter many different trials and tribulations from which I hope you learn the life lesson that was meant to be taught with the experience. This is also your chance to redeem yourself if you have performed poorly in school. It is time to buckle down and study hard to make the best grades you are capable of. This will make its biggest pay off when it is time to look at scholarships. The majority of scholarships these days are academic based meaning you must have good grades to receive a scholarship. I know each and every one of you are capable of achieving this goal. If I can assist you please let me know and I will help. All Upcoming Seniors If you are planning on submitting a 4-H Foundation Scholarship next Spring, be sure to take the ACT and/or the SAT in the Fall since scholarship applications will be due in February. Enroll in 4-H Today Each year the 4-H member data base is zeroed out meaning you must reenroll each year to be an active 4-H member. This can simply be done by going to archer.agrilife.org and clicking on the link that says enroll in 4-H Today. The enrollment process has begun for the upcoming year and you can have the reduced cost of $20 until October 31 st after that deadline enrollment fees will go up to $25 Remember you must be an active 4-H member to enter contest, apply for scholarships, hold offices, or to show animals at county or the major livestock shows. For more information please contact your club manager or the extension office. 3- D ARCHERY FUN SHOOT Saturday September 24, 2016 Archer County Shooting Sports Complex/ Archer City (1000 W South St.) Register at 8:30 a.m. Shotgun Start at 10a.m. ENTRY FEE $20 Hunting Class Ages 12 and under Jr. Ages- 12-17 Intermediates Ages 18-up Seniors TARGETS 1-15 Known yardage 16-30 Unknown yardage No Broadheads/ Field Points Only For more information contact Billy Burks 940-224-7723

4-H AGE GUIDELINES One of the more frequent questions asked, how old do you have to be to join 4-H? What are the different age categories? Effective this new 4-H year Texas 4-H will have new membership eligibility based on SCHOOL GRADE and not age. The new eligibility rules and guidelines are: A 4-H member has to be in the 3 rd grade with a minimum age of 8. The maximum age is 18 effective August 31, 2016 and in the 12 th grade. 4-H member age categories: Juniors are grades 3, 4 and 5. Intermediates are grades 6, 7 and 8. Seniors are grades 9, 10, 11, 12. 4-H ARCHERY PROJECT This was a new project that was started back in the Spring. Many youth have already competed and learned a fun new skill. If 4-H members are interested in joining the 4-H Archery project contact the Extension office for practice times and contact information. 4-H FOODS PROJECTS KICK OFF IN SEPTEMBER/ OCT. In the Fall, 4-H members can be involved in various 4-H Foods Projects. There are opportunities for youth to participate in team foods activities and individual selfdirected foods projects Groups of 3-5 4-H members team up and participate in the 4-H food challenge or in nutrition quiz bowl contests. Youth will learn about nutrition, cooking skills, and have fun working together to create recipes in the 4-H food challenge. There are several different types of food shows where 4-H members can create and cook a recipe and enter it into competition. At 4-H meetings in September 4-H members can find out about upcoming workshops and competitions that will be in October-December. Come and join in cooking groups around the county and have some fun learning a new skill. Congratulations to 4-H Members We will try and keep you posted on accomplishments of Archer County 4-H members. On behalf of the Archer County 4-H program we hope your 4-H experience will bring your new experiences and opportunities to learn new things, have fun and help others. The Archer County 4-H program last year had over 165 youth that participated in a variety of projects, activities and events to promote 4-H throughout the county. I hope the 2016-2017 4-H year will bring even more youth to participate in 4-H clubs. On a parting note, for the past 7 years Justin Gilliam served as the County Extension Agent, Agriculture. On August 1, 2016 he transferred to Hardeman county to assume the same role. Hopefully as you participate in District 4-H and State 4-H events you will be able to say hello to Justin as he is still in District 3 4-H. At this time the County Extension Agent, Ag. position has not been filed in Archer County. Hopefully soon they will be announcing a replacement. If we can be assistance feel free to contact the Archer County office, one of the 4-H club managers, or myself to make your 4-H experience a positive one. Good luck and have a fun 4-H year! Kathryn Carnes, County Extension Agent- FCS- Archer County.
