Inside this Issue Member News 1-2 International Women s Day Editor: Jennifer Strand 2 Upcoming Events 3 Announcements 3 Recipe of the month 4 Funnies 5 jstrand2302@gmail.com On Sunday, February 12, the Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society awarded our sister, the incredibly talented Lila Mori, with the Alice Award. The Alice award is named for a beloved local musician, vocalist Alice Cardozo who died in 1996. As many of you know, Lila has performed for 23 years at The Broadmoor's Penrose Room. She also appears from time to time with the jazz society. The Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society hosts their events the second Sunday of each month at the Olympia Reception and Event Center, 975 S. Union Blvd. from 1-4pm. Cost to listen to the jazz is $10 per person at the door. Food tickets for a fabulous Greek buffet are also sold at the door for $15. Visit ppjass.org for more information. Congratulations, Lila! Written by Gina Knaack

Page 2 La Voce On March 4, 2017, Pueblo Lodge presented Jay Cimino with their Citizen of the Year Award. Jay, a Colorado Springs businessman and philanthropist, is a member of Pikes Peak Sons of Italy Lodge #2870. Citizens throughout southern Colorado are familiar with Jay s extensive involvement with United Way, the Marian House Soup Kitchen, and the Komen Race for the Cure in Colorado Springs. He has also been a huge supporter of the Trinidad Community, supporting Holy Trinity Academy and the redevelopment of La Puerta de Colorado Project in Trinidad. Jay was instrumental in the creation Mt. Carmel Health, Wellness, and Community Center in Las Animas, which he considers his greatest achievement. Mt. Carmel Health provides much needed medical service to southern Coloradan s every day of the week. Jay s philanthropic efforts are well documented and it goes without saying that he has had a far reaching positive impact in southern Colorado. Pikes Peak Lodge joins Pueblo Lodge in congratulating Jay Cimino on his lifelong achievement in helping others. La Festa della Donna International Women s Day International Women's Day is a popular holiday in Italy, celebrated each year on March 8. It is a day on which to celebrate women's economic, political and social achievements. Its roots lie in the feminist struggle for equal rights and recognition of the dignity, value and contributions of women worldwide in every area of society. The holiday began as a day of memory and protest following a tragic event in New York in 1908. In early March of that year, the workers (all women) at a textile factory went on strike to protest the substandard conditions in which they were forced to work. On the 8th, the owner blocked all of the exits to the factory and set the building on fire. The 129 factory workers trapped inside, for the most part Italian immigrants, all died. Today the celebration of La Festa della Donna has become more similar to Mother's Day or Valentine's Day. Women receive bouquets of mimosa flowers from the men in their lives, be they husbands, sons, friends, or employers. This flower was chosen by Italian feminists as the symbol of the holiday in 1946, to mark the first occasion of the holiday after the end of World War II. It was chosen because of its bright color and fragrant scent, and because it is in bloom at this time of year and is inexpensive. http://www.charmingitaly.com/article/international-womens-day At our last general meeting on March 7th, President Gina Knaack presented the women of our lodge with yellow flowers in honor of International Women s Day.

Recipe of the Month Torta Mimosa Cake The brilliant yellow of the sponge and puffy structure alludes to the Mimosa flower, from which the cake gets its name. Controversially, the mimosa flower is so named for being delicate to touch, while it was women who boldly fought against enforced stereotypes of sensitivity who were honored through this tradition. The recipe is too big to fit in the newsletter, so I have copied a link to a recipe I found, which sounds delicious! If anyone would like to try it, let us know how it turned out! http://www.fettadicasa.co.uk/torta-mimosa-tohr-tah-meemoh-sah-mimosa-cake/
