Volume 3, Issue 6 June, 2017 Order Sons of Italy Pikes Peak Lodge #2870 Benvenuti amici (Welcome Friends) State Convention Inside this Issue State Convention 1-2 Upcoming Events 2 Announcements 4 This year s OSIA State Convention was hosted by our lodge at the Marriot Hotel. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the meeting/ induction of new state officers went very well. Bocce Tournament Weather pushed us indoors, but we made do! Page 2 Saturday meeting La Voce Boy Scout Troop #53 Honor Guard presented the colors. Senator Owen Hill gave a powerful speech to start off the meeting. President Gina Knaack welcoming delegates and guests to the convention meeting. State Past President Dominic LoSasso (center) heading up the meeting. Orator Brother John Carochi (Top right) is our newly elected State President. The convention meeting went well (except for the cooling issue) and the State officer elections went smoothly. Breakout session discussions were on fundraising, membership, culture, and Columbus Day preservation. Some of the highlights to come out of the breakout sessions were: Statewide membership increased by 15 members Social members can now be counted as members, but still cannot hold office Host free events to draw members (beer tasting at a brewery, or possibly host a concert). The need for lodges in distant areas The need to attract younger members and how to share the Italian/American influence with them. Some ideas were sponsor a soccer or Bocce league, putting historical facts on websites and accessing social media better Ideas for foundation fundraising the best idea was A Taste of Italy dinner where all lodges would participate by preparing one item for the dinner. The dinner would take place in Denver. Next steps for the Columbus Day battle are speaking with the Colorado Commission of Native Americans and the need to stay one step ahead of Rep. Joe Salazar Hospitality Suite shenanigans! Yours truly had a little too much fun taking selfies! Seating was limited, but that didn t stop us from enjoying ourselves!

Territory Days was a success! We signed up about 30 prospective members and had a lot of fun talking to folks! We even had a couple of pirates show up!! FYI: At our June 6th potluck, we had a couple of people show up from Territory Days and they are thinking of joining!! If anyone has a 10 x 10 canopy we could use for Territory Days next year, that would be great! We would like to upsize from a 8 x 8 for next year. We sit too far back and the booths around us are big! Bunco!!! May Bunco collected $180 and $120 of that went to the State Sons of Italy Foundation for our national charities and state scholarships. $60 was paid out in prizes! Don t forget that the next Bunco is on July 15th and Member update As many of you know, Sister Diane Varlesi was injured in an accident at home. She broke her wrist and fractured her pelvis. She wanted everyone to know that she is in much better spirits now that she finally has a bright purple cast on her arm!
