INTRODUCTION TO WORKING WITH BYES & FILLING OUT THE SPARRING RESULTS SHEET WORKSHEET The goals of the next section of the Judging Level Test are to confirm that the students understand and can do the following: 1. Determine HOW MANY byes there should be awarded 2. Determine WHO should receive the byes awarded 3. PROPERLY place those awarded byes on the Sparring Results Sheet There are some trick segments of the test. The use of the word MUST in the question; Which competitors MUST receive byes based on is key in that the question does not ask for names of all the bye recipients. It asks for who MUST receive the byes based on the information provided. There may be more byes that need to be awarded (some drawn by a random method) or there may be more possible competitors eligible for byes. The question is worded this way so the student taking the test must determine who MUST receive the byes. It is important to remember that a person labeled as Triple Crown did win in Sparring. Some students may mistakenly leave them out since the word Sparring is not in the title. The number of lines provided does not necessarily correlate to the number of byes needed. It may be that not all of the lines will be written on or that more than one name may be needed on a line. This is just space for writing the names of those that MUST receive the byes. Another key element in this test is the actual filling in of the names on the Sparring Results Sheet. Because the byes are first determined by the titles won by the competitors, this is very similar to a seeding process. Because of this, those being awarded the byes should be separated from each other within the round by as much room as is possible. For instance, in a full division of 16 competitors, the number one seed should be at the very top of the bracket and the number two seed should be at the very bottom of the bracket so they would not meet each other until the very end of the competition (if they each were successful in winning all of their fights). If you look closely at a Sparring Results Sheet you will see small numbers within circles under each name line. These numbers represent the seeding placement of the competitors. Those being awarded byes should not be sparring each other immediately in the second round whenever possible. Please review the ANSWER SHEET closely for the correct placement of the competitors being awarded byes. Because of the significant importance of the byes being done correctly during actual competition, any mistakes on determining HOW MANY byes or determining WHO should receive the byes will result in failing this test regardless of the correctness of the other questions. PROPERLY placing those awarded the byes will still be considered a learning phase so mistakes will not result in any penalties.

WORKING WITH BYES & FILLING OUT SPARRING SHEET WORKSHEET Scenario #1: ANSWER KEY You have a division of Boys 8 10 year old Purple & Blue Belts. There are 5 competitors in the division. How many byes will be given? 3 Byes are to be given Jimmy Brown Phil Smith Andrew Morgan Brian Robinson Robert Johnson Which competitors MUST receive byes based on 5 competitors? Brian Robinson Phil Smith The third bye would be selected by random draw amongst the remaining competitors The important points to look for on this are: Since there are only 5 competitors, to use the second round lines instead of the first to help avoid confusion of the extra lines (NOT MANDATORY to do so, but suggested) To make sure the competitors receiving the byes are spread out within the bracket. The best arrangement for this division would be (keeping in mind the third bye is a random draw): Line #1 Brian Robinson Line #2 BYE Line #3 Robert Johnson Line #4 Andrew Morgan Line #5 Jimmy Brown (random draw bye) Line #6 BYE Line #7 BYE Line #8 Phil Smith
