Transit Voyages 2010 The voyage by Swedish supply icebreaker Tor Viking II piloted by atomic icebreaker Rossiya was done a month after the official completion of summer-toautumn navigation on the NSR. This successful transit voyage done in late December proved that it is possible to increase the period of Arctic navigation on the NSR in winter months.

Vitino Port Atomic icebreaker Rossiya called on February 04 at the Vitino seaport in the White Sea first time in 2011. Russian Federation government added Vitino port to the list of ports open for the vessels with nuclear power plants in 2010. This decision was necessary to provide safe navigation especially in winter when fast ice poses significant obstacle for cargo vessels sailing to the berths which results in loss of operating time and decrease of safety level.

i/b Rossiya transported and landed the research polar station SP-39 on ice in 2011. In previous years atomic icebreakers also assisted the mission of Polar Research Stations SP-37 and SP-38. The International Conference Through the Northern Sea Route to Strategic Stability and Equal Partnership in the Arctic was held onboard ib Yamal. It was an event of outmost international importance. High ranking officials from Russia and the Arctic Council states took part. The participants also observed the search and rescue at sea training. 16

From: The Arctic s rapidly shrinking sea ice cover: a research synthesis By: Julienne C. Stroeve Mark C. Serreze Marika M. Holland Jennifer E. Kay James Malanik Andrew P. Barrett Research done by Russian and foreign scientists prove that the total amount of multi-year ice and ice cover reduced significantly during the last 30 years. American scientists show that the amount of ice in September (minimal annual ice amount in the Arctic) was reducing at a speed of 12,4% per decade during 1979-2011. Fig. 1 Color map (left): monthly sea ice concentration for September 2010. The red line marks the September 2007 extent, the orange line is the extent for September 2008, the green line the September 2009 extent and the pink line is the climatological (1979 2000) monthly mean for September. Bottom: Time-series of monthly averaged September sea iceextent with linear trend line.
