Dear members of the media After Hong Kong in 2017, our leading international track cycling event returns to Europe this year. On behalf of the UCI, I would like to say how pleased we are to have Apeldoorn hosting the UCI Track Cycling World Championships for the second time after 2011. Since those Worlds seven years ago, the Omnisport Apeldoorn has hosted our UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in 2015 and a round of the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in 2016. The UCI Track Cycling World Championships presented by Tissot is the pinnacle of the track season and the major goal of many athletes who dream of donning the UCI World Champion s rainbow jersey. This season s Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup has shown us which athletes are in top shape, but as everyone knows, anything can happen at the World Championships. I take this opportunity to mention the fantastic work carried out for our sport year after year by the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Wielren Unie (KNWU) and its President Marcel Wintels. Quite apart from track cycling, the Netherlands has also hosted our UCI World Championships for road (Limburg) in 2012, for cyclo-cross (Hoogerheide) and BMX (Rotterdam) in 2014 and again for cyclo-cross in Valkenburg just a few weeks ago. As President of the UCI, it is fantastic to have the support of such a committed cycling nation. These Championships, taking place in an outstanding setting, promise to be intensely exciting. The event nevertheless needs the media to ensure maximum national and international exposure. We thank you all audiovisual media, written and online publications, photographers for your vital presence. The Apeldoorn 2018 organising committee has provided media facilities at the Omnisport Apeldoorn sports complex that are more than worthy of this world-class event. In all areas you may be working, LOC and UCI representatives will be there to help you. This guide also aims to familiarize you with the Worlds. Our eyes are now on the world s best track cyclists and I wish all the athletes the best of luck and a very successful 2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships presented by Tissot. David Lappartient UCI President 3

2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn! You must have already noticed that Apeldoorn is a real bike city. We love riding our city bikes, mountain bikes or race bikes a lot. The city and its surroundings really support these activities very well. The national and international track cycling elite know how to find their way to and in Apeldoorn, like the locals do. They regularly visit our city. The highlight was seeing Tom Dumoulin win the Giro d Italia time trial on Apeldoorn roads in May 2018. The atmosphere in the city was amazing. The Marktplein was packed during the team presentation. The 2011 UCI Track World Championships in our city were a huge success too. The stands in Omnisport were full. Apeldoorn loves its track cycling and I know that this week will bring fireworks again! This year over 350 riders from over 40 countries travel to Omnisport. It looks like it will be an historical event because the Netherlands never had so many chances to win a medal. The biggest favorites for gold, silver and bronze even come from our own city. Who will take home those medals? We will all be part of it the next days in Omnisport. It all happens in our Apeldoorn and that makes me really proud. Enjoy these days of exciting top sports! Nathan Stukker Alderman of sports Apeldoorn City Council 4
