I m sure all the resolutions are in full swing, the weight is falling off, and the exercise calendar is full. I know, me neither The clubhouse was closed the first two weeks of January for deep cleaning. Otherwise, things are pretty quiet on the mountain this time of year, with one notable exception. Nathan and his crew are still busy tending the golf course to ensure prime conditions come spring. So in case you don t recognize some of the guys you see out there, let me introduce: Nathan Biggs, our Golf Course Superintendent extraordinaire, lives in Elkin with his wife Laura and their daughter Evelyn. He brought a wealth of experience to High Meadows, including stints at Pine Needles, Elk River CC, Century CC and CC of Vermont. He loves spending time with the family, but you ll catch him sneaking out now and then to throw a fly in the Little River. He might tell you where his honey hole is if you ask him nicely! Nathan is ably assisted by Luke Alexander. Relatively new to High Meadows, Luke hails from Fuquay-Varina, VA and learned turf grass management at UMass. He has been Asst. Superintendent at Blowing Rock and Diamond Run, and hopes to be his own boss one day. He loves fly fishing as well, in addition to rock climbing and snow boarding. He s been a tremendous addition to Nathan s staff, so while we wish him nothing but the best in the future, we hope his dream job doesn t come along too soon! Chris Ashley is the guy that keeps the machinery running, a skill he learned at Forsyth Tech. Originally from Laurel Springs, he and his wife have two daughters and two grandsons. When not fixing equipment, he gravitates towards hunting, fishing and grandkids. Sherlon Smith is a Marine veteran from Sparta and volunteers with the Cherry Lane Fire Department. I think we can all agree on a big THANK YOU for that! Outdoor recreation is a common thread within this group, with Sherlon preferring hunting and shooting sports. These guys have given us a gem of a golf course to play despite the challenges of Roaring Gap s unpredictable weather. Please make a point to let them know how much their efforts are appreciated. Preside esident (See Pr nt continued on page 2) General Managers Message We got everything on our list done! While we were closed we touched up some paint, steam cleaned all the floors, scrubbed every piece of equipment and did all the little repairs we had been putting off until we had time as well as completing preventative maintenance to improve the life of all of our HVAC units and ice makers. The Grille also received a much needed facelift: along with a fresh coat of paint, we replaced broken equipment and the floor behind the counter in anticipation of a great 2017! We thank all of you that missed us the first 2 weeks of January and appreciate your patience as we take the time needed to make our club great. Have you been watching our e-mails with new menus and weekly specials? The Social committee and your Food & Beverage team is working hard to build an amazing 2017! Don t miss out on the fun it s time to make reservations or save the dates for some of our upcoming events: Sweetheart Dinner & Dance, Saturday, February 11 th (see e-mail blast all this month). Bingo #2 & Buffet, Thursday February 16 th. Featuring an Italian Buffet and the Bingo Queens Donna & Barbie. Mardi Gras Weekly Special starting Wednesday, February 22 nd. St Patty s weekly specials starting Wednesday, March 15 th. Don t forget to make reservations! Save the date for Bingo #3 Thursday, March 16 th. The updated Grille is open starting on weekends Friday, March 24 th. Watch for the New 2017 Membership Directory & calendar coming to your home this March. I want to invite more of you to share with us and the Board of Directors any ideas you may have to make our club even better. Some of you have taken the time to write and e-mail some great suggestions we re always eager to hear more! See GM Message (Continued on page 2) In Memory John Parsons

President President (Continued from page 1) The Board is hard at work planning for the coming year. Pat Green and her committee have created a great social program. The new practice area should be fantastic. Carolyn Harrell s Membership Committee is finalizing the 2017 promotion, but remember as always, we need your help in recruiting new members. Call with your ideas or reach out to any of us at any time. See you on the mountain.. Paul GM Message (Continued from page 1) As always, we are thinking of ways to encourage people to become members. You can look forward to information about our membership drive & promotions in the March newsletter. Until then, let me know if there are some folks you want me to reach out to and invite to our club or any community, civic organization meetings that could use a speaker to talk about HMG&CC and our community. We are proud of you and our efforts. We are ready to let the secret out of how great this membership is and how wonderful all of your families are! Please join us with a grand push of positive energy for new members in 2017! Come have some fun at the club, Mark March 2017 Coming Events March 15-17... St. Patrick s Themed Menu March 16... HMCC LGA New Year News & Notes With the holidays over it s time to begin thinking of spring and our 2017 LGA season!!! Our LGA has an ongoing struggle for strong participation on Thursday Play Days. With that in mind we will be trying one additional format hoping to involve more ladies. One play day each month (in no particular order) will involve Partner Play. Simply sign up with the golf shop and you will be paired with a partner and the format will be a best ball of your twosome against the field scored as both a gross and a net score per twosome. We all know it is nice to have a partner to rely on as well as share the winnings. Please consider giving this format a try because it could be lots of fun! President s Cup Another game we are hoping to give a chance this season is a partner competition which will be played as best NET match play. In this format you are to choose a season long partner. If you win you move on to play another twosome until there is only one twosome left and they are the 2017 winner. In order to have this competition we must have a minimum of 8 teams (twosomes). Once we have all the teams the golf shop will arrange a bracket showing who you will play. If we have 12 or 16 teams they will make more than one bracket and the winners of each bracket will play to determine the 2017 winner. Please use this off-season to line up a partner. We will have a sign-up sheet in the locker room prior to opening day. We are proposing that this competition replace the names normally added to the President s Cup plaque. You will remember we dropped President s Cup from our schedule and made the Queen Bee a 2-day competition. MGA January, 2017 HMCC Men s Golf Association Greetings from High Meadows! Your Men s Golf Association has been at work planning your schedule of events for 2017. We are looking forward to a great year. Your MGA Officers for 2017 are as follows: Tommy Thompson President; Clarence Haile - Vice President; Vernon Mountcastle- Secretary and Allen Williams - Treasurer. If during the year there are any complaints they should be addressed to the VP, Sec. or Treas. If there are any compliments they can be addressed to me. The MGA at High Meadows would like to invite all male members to become a part of our organization this year. The MGA plays an integral part in providing opportunities for you to play golf at High Meadows, the $500.00 payout for any MGA Member who has a Hole-in-One at one of our events, as well as providing the snacks and soft drinks in our locker room for MGA members and their guests. It s the best $30.00.00 you could spend at our club. As usual the Club Office will handle the billing for the dues, so please indicate at that time that you would like to become a member this year. Your MGA sponsors one Men s Stag Day Member-Guest, as well as the Saturday and Wednesday Play Day. The official Games are held each Saturday and Wednesday, April through October when a Club Event is not scheduled. Other Months, as weather permits, we will have Co-Ed play on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Dan Murray will be in charge of Wednesday Play. The Wednesday Skins has a Trophy to be presented at the end of the season for most skins during the season. The Men s Stag Day is designed for you to introduce a potential member to High Meadows. Think about whom you might bring to this event and invite them this year. The Stag Day this year is on Friday June 23. An Event you do not want to miss is the MGA Kick-off Tournament, which will be held on May 19, 20 and 21. The Tournament begins with a Lunch on Friday at which time the Teams will be announced. After the Lunch there will be a nine hole match. The event will continue on Saturday with two nine hole matches and the final two matches on Sunday morning followed with the shoot-out for flight winners. A Tournament sign-up entry form will be mailed to MGA members in April. A Committee was appointed, chaired by Ralph Garner, to make this a more enjoyable Tournament and I think everyone will be pleased with their format. More details on this later. Our Fall MGA Kick-out will be a one-day Tournament with lunch to follow on Saturday, October 7. The Lee Howell Memorial Trophy will be presented at the October Kick-out Tournament. It will be presented to the member with the best to target overall, during the season. You will need to play in ten Saturday events to be eligible to win. Last year s winner was John Lyda. Just a reminder that Wednesday Play Day and Saturday are open to all Members of High Meadows and their Guests with established handicaps. It is a great way to meet people if you are a new member and makes it easy for you to get a game. Call the Pro Shop at least the day before to sign-up. If you have any questions please don t hesitate to contact me. (336) 363-2023 or e-mail tntbdt@charter.net Tommy Thompson, HMCC Men s Golf Association
