Pokey Chatman HEAD COACH 21-1 (first year) 14th season as a coach at LSU Pokey has all the makings of a great coach, I believe she will find immediate success. -LSU ATHLETICS DIRECTOR SKIP BERTMAN Birthdate: June 18, 1969 Age: 34 Hometown: Ama, La. College: LSU, 1991 It happens every so often in college sports: a legend becomes synonymous with a school's program. It happens when a coach enjoys sustained success, and her career defines the very history of the sport. That was Sue Gunter and LSU Lady Tiger Basketball. What ultimately comes next is the sometimes impossible task of replacing the legend, finding just the right person to carry on traditions, yet establish a new but equally successful identity. At LSU, the search was short and the speculation negligible. Pokey Chatman has helped build the very program the legend was leaving behind, and she has prepared herself well for the opportunity to step in as head coach. In fact, that opportunity came sooner and in a manner no one had anticipated. When Gunter fell ill during the 2003-04 season, Chatman stepped to the front and seamlessly led LSU to the first Final Four in school history and a second-place finish in the SEC. Chatman led the Lady Tigers to a 15-5 record in the absence of Gunter from the sidelines. Included in those victories were five wins over top 25 teams, including the school's first victory over a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, a 71-55 drubbing of Texas in the West Regional Semifinal prior to upsetting SEC foe Georgia in the regional final to advance to the Final Four. When Gunter announced she would retire after a Hall of Fame coaching career marked by 40 years and 708 victories, LSU athletics director Skip Bertman smartly turned to Chatman, an LSU Hall of Famer herself, and an All-American guard who had been with Gunter as both a player and an assistant coach for 17 years. The call came on April 27, 2004, when Bertman named Chatman as only the fourth head coach in the history of LSU Women's Basketball. Chatman had just completed her 13th season on the Lady Tiger staff, and her fifth as an associate coach after being elevated to that position in September 1999. But in 2003-04, Chatman became the most famous associate coach in the country when she took on the role of acting head coach in Gunter's absence, earning the Black Coaches Association's National Coach of the Year honors for her efforts in relief. THE BIG 20 FOR THE 17TH TIME LSU became the first team in the nation to reach 20 wins this season and reached the milestone for the 17th time the program s history. The Lady Tigers have now reached 20 wins for three straight seasons and six of the last seven years. EIGHT STRAIGHT IN THE SEC LSU is not only off to its best start in SEC play at 8-0, but the eight straight conference victories is the longest win streak for the Lady Tigers in league play, besting the seven straight wins in SEC play in 2003. BIG TIME When No. 5 Tennessee visits the Maravich Center on Thursday night it will mark the first time LSU will host a top 5 team as the No.1 team in the nation. During LSU s run as the No. 1 team in 1978, the Lady Tigers only faced one ranked team, No. 3 Tennessee on the road. Thursday will mark the second time LSU will host a ranked team this season, including No. 17 Georgia s visit on Jan. 8. 13-0 BEST START BY SEC COACH Pokey Chatman s 13-0 start as a head coach was the best by a Southeastern Conference first-year head coach in the history of the league. Only Jim Foster, who was 11-0 to open his career as Vanderbilt, was close to Chatman s and LSU s 13-0 mark. 8-0 IN SEC BEST START BY COACH Pokey Chatman s 8-0 record in the SEC is the best start in conference play by a firstyear head coach in league history, according to the SEC office and dating back to the 1982-83 season. 10
