ACROSS MY DESK Red Onion Creative Ballarat FNL Operations Manager Scott Carey Gambling s Not A Game Round This weekend is Gambling s Not A Game Round in the Ballarat Football Netball League as all clubs band together with the aim to counter the growing culture of gambling in clubs by encouraging and supporting responsible and healthy club environments. The BFNL this year has continued its partnership with the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, after the successful roll out of the Responsible Gambling Awareness sessions across all of our clubs last season. Last year s program aimed to: - Help clubs preserve the essence of their sport by separating gambling from sports - Shift the focus back to the love of the game and not the odds - Minimise young people s exposure to gambling activities and advertising - Increase awareness of the risks associated with gambling - Help prevent problem gambling and related harm; and - Raise awareness of Gambler s Help services As part of the program, clubs signed and adopted the Responsible Gambling Charter which is a document that is a commitment to minimising the exposure of gambling activities and advertising to young people and to raise awareness about the potential risks of gambling in the club community. This year clubs undertook a new pilot Charter Champion Training that has been developed as an expansion to the current Responsible Gambling Awareness and Sporting Clubs Program offered. The idea behind the training is to refresh our club Charter Champions understanding of the Sporting Clubs Program, and of the Responsible Gambling Charter BFNL clubs signed. It is aimed at building the skills and knowledge of the Charter Champions at our clubs around the current gambling environment and why young people - especially those interested in sport - are at higher risk. It also aims to ensure that your club s Charter Champions are aware of the help and support services available. Participation at the session was excellent and all clubs are committed to continue to roll out the program in support of the key message the program portrays. Go to the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation website for more information on the Gambling Is Not A Game website - http://www.gamblingsnotagame.com/ Robert Allan Medal, Youth Girls Presentation Night and Henderson Medal Tickets just around the corner! AT THE BAR with Theo & Digger Once again for the 2016 season, local footy fans Theo and Digger return to give their views and opinions on BFL footy each week, from the comfort of the Sports Bar at the Ballarat Leagues Club! Theo: So Dig, did you get to the Hall of Fame dinner last week after all of that? Digger: Kind of mate didn t make it into the big room, but sat on a couple of pots and a parma in the Sports Bar last Wednesday night and tried to listen in. Even snuck into the gaming area and sat on the lounge with a coffee to listen to Tony Shaw! T: So you didn t get in, is what you re trying to say? D: Sadly, that s correct. T: Stiff mate D: I ll live T: Did you get out and watch any footy on the weekend, or did you take the same cue as your Lakers and have a weekend off? D: Went down to the Northern Oval for a bit, but they d knocked down my usual seat and it was too cold to sit in the outer, so retreated home and enjoyed an afternoon with the good lady wife instead! T: So there s no point asking you about what happened last week then? D: Far from it mate, I always keep an ear to the ground and a finger on the pulse, to use up my weekly quota of clichés, and I ve got quite a bit of info from the weekend. T: What can you tell me then? D: I can tell you that finals-bound sides should be starting to fear North Ballarat City all over again, and thankful that the Northern Oval will be out of bounds come finals time, as the Northies are a seriously good side this season, especially at home. They demolished East Point last week and Derick Micallef is looking very much like the player that couldn t be touched in the first half of last season. T: What about the other games, how close to the ground was your ear? D: Ballarat, from all reports, looked completely dominant against Melton South, with young Hayden Hughes kicking another bag of goals, and whilst they mightn t play finals this year despite the mathematicians saying that they re still a chance, look out for the Swans next year. T: Anything from the Swans home ground last weekend after the Sebastopol v Redan game was moved there? D: I heard that Sebastopol looked good early but Redan wore them down after half time, which is about what I was expecting. T: Let s move onto this week then mate and have a look at this week s games D before we do mate, are you ever going to give your thoughts on any of this, or are you just going to ask stupid questions all of the time? T: You know how this works mate you re the expert so I defer to you for anything requiring knowledge, so I just shoot the questions at you. D: Soft option mate I cop it in the neck every week and you come out smelling like roses because you re too soft to put it on the block. T: That s how it is mate like it or lump it. D: I m not sure how we re friends, to be honest. T: Be that as it may, our job is to talk footy, so do your job and tell me who s going to win this week s games, starting at Maddingley Park with Bacchus Marsh playing Melton. D: We ll get onto this later, but like the professional as I am, I ll soldier on. Big game for Melton, who are still hanging by the skin of their teeth in sixth spot, but Bacchus Marsh are flying at the moment and will get the job done here. T: Can your Lakers get back on track against Redan this week? D: I think so. They needed the rest to ensure a couple of blokes could get over some niggles, and I hear that the troops are starting to come back into the fold. Won t be easy as Redan are a seriously good side, especially at home, but think that the green machine can get their mojo back. T: East Point take on Ballarat at the Eastern Oval big game for both sides. D: Surely East Point can t drop this one? If they win all of their last three games they re a chance to play finals, but if they bring to the table what they did last week they could also lose all of those last three games. Don t sleep on the Swans at the moment, but after last week surely East dig deep and keep their season alive. T: Melton South host Sunbury today, are the Panthers any chance D: No. Sunbury by plenty. T: Wow, short and sharp with that one. D: Why use ten words when three gets the job done? T: Good point. What about North City and Darley on Sunday D: Game s at the Northern Oval, so I can t tip against North City who are flying at the moment, although it will be interesting to see if Darley are able to regroup after the bye and keep their season alive. T: Is happy Dig back now? D: Maybe you should step outside for a second and we ll have a chat about it? T: Or I could just buy you a parma instead? D: Soft option again mate but you don t knock back the best parma in Ballarat, welcome back!!! 4 BFNL RECORD 2016 WWW.BFL.VCFL.COM.AU 5

ROUND 16 FOOTBALL PREVIEW by Shaun Kelly We ve now entered August, which means that we re officially on the home straight, heading towards the 2016 McDonald s Finals Series here in the Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball League. Now that I ve got the mandatory sponsor plugs in, it s time to get down to business given that we ll be playing finals football this month, but we ve still got no idea about how spots three through six on the ladder will look once post-season football kicks off. BACCHUS MARSH kick off this week s round at home in what should be a pretty good game against a MELTON side that will be looking to make a statement on the eve of a finals series they re pretty desperate to compete in, which will definitely make for a big afternoon at Maddingley Park today. Both teams will be rested after a bye last week, and both know that a win today could mean wonders for the rest of their season a Cobras win all but locks down a top-two spot and could even see them move to the top of the ladder if Redan knock over Lake Wendouree, and a win for the Bloods could give them a huge leg-up in the race for sixth spot. It s a case of easier said than done for the Bloods though, who have been in pretty good form of late, especially through the middle of the ground, but they face a Cobras side who have answered most challenges this year, and have arguably the most potent forward line in the league at the moment. PREDICTION: BACCHUS MARSH to get the win, but if my other predictions come to fruition, the Bloods will remain in sixth spot. Match of the Round takes place at the City Oval this week (or at least it does at time of writing) as REDAN host LAKE WENDOUREE in what should be a fantastic game. Not much separated these two sides back in Round 1, as the Lakers (or Wendouree on that night) only pulled away in the last quarter, and recent formlines suggest that the Lakers mightn t be in their mid-season best form at the moment. Whilst the Lakers rested last weekend, Redan took to Alfredton Oval to play Sebastopol in a game that was moved off a soggy Marty Busch and whilst it took them a half to shake the determined Burras, the Lions kicked nine second-half goals to just one from the Burras to storm home with a 65 point win that has them in fourth spot, but with less than a percentage point separating the third-placed North Ballarat City from Redan and Sunbury. The Lakers will be one of the main beneficiaries of the bye last weekend as they had a lot of sore bodies, and they should see some players return today, including Ash Simpson and Isaac Kirby who have returned from their overseas jaunt to add some depth to the Lakers list. This should be a great game between two sides that could potentially meet again in a few weeks time with much more on the line. PREDICTION: Almost tipping with a caveat here, as if the game stays at City Oval then REDAN will win but even if it s moved, the Lions still have the midfield rotations to run with the Lakers. Plenty on the line at the Eastern Oval today as EAST POINT host BALLARAT, with the Swans shooting somewhat surprisingly into finals contention last weekend with a huge win over Melton South, winning by 103 points thanks to a ten goal final quarter, another six goal haul from Hayden Hughes and continued good performances from Shane Hutchinson, Marcus Powling, Daniel Kennedy and Tom Stapleton. East Point, on the other hand, lost to North Ballarat City by the same amount that the Swans won by, on a day that Roos coach Glenn Wilkins will soon want to put behind him. The loss dropped East Point to two games behind sixthplaced Melton and seventh-placed Darley, and a game behind the Ballarat side they play today, although if they win every game from here on in, finals are still a big possibility. It will need to start with a pretty drastic form reversal at home today, where they do play much better, although they will need to be very wary of a Ballarat side that already boasts a win over the Roos this year, back in their traditional ANZAC round clash, and who s confidence will be knocking down doors at the moment. Percentage could hurt the Swans at the moment, but a win today could have them equal on points with the sixth-placed Bloods, but it s going to be far from an easy task. PREDICTION: Both team s seasons are on the line today, but surely EAST POINT can rebound from last week to record a win to keep them well and truly in the finals hunt. MELTON SOUTH have another tough assignment today, coming off the back of a 103 point loss to eighth-placed Ballarat as they welcome a rested SUNBURY side to the Melton Rec Reserve today. The Lions currently sit in fifth spot, but less than a percentage point behind third-placed North Ballarat City, and they ll be looking for a big percentage boost today to help them rocket into third place ahead of a potential top-three clash against North Ballarat City next week. PREDICTION: SUNBURY to win comfortably The last Sunday home-and-away game for the season takes place at Eureka Stadium today as NORTH BALLARAT CITY, fresh from a 103 point thumping of East Point last week, host a DARLEY side who s premiership defence is hanging in the balance at the moment, and who would have enjoyed the rest last week. North City are playing Eureka Stadium so well at the moment, and part of that is because their forward line is so potent at the moment this column has waxed lyrical about the talents of Derick Micallef many times, and an eight-goal haul last week has him in pole position for the Tony Lockett Medal at the moment, and with Simon McCartin spending more time forward and looking extremely dangerous, Matt Johnston offering another marking target and coach Jordyn Burke set to return to the side today, that forward line gets a lot scarier. The Devils have the talent to match the Northies through the midfield, and will rely on Steven Kennedy, Richard Knight, Anthony Chiu and Brad Inglis to get them going today, but they ll need to be on their games. PREDICTION: NORTH BALLARAT CITY to get the win and keep marching towards a possible top-three finish. 8 BFNL RECORD 2016 WWW.BFL.VCFL.COM.AU 9

ROUND 16 NETBALL PREVIEW by Shaun Kelly We re back to full rounds of netball in the BGT A Grade netball competition this week, in a week of netball that could go a ways towards deciding the participants in this year s McDonald s Finals Series, or that could also keep the picture just as cloudy as ever. Let s jump into it and have a look at how Round 15 is set to shape up this week. BACCHUS MARSH will be looking for their third win of the season as they take on MELTON at Maddingley Park today, who also will be confident of bringing home a win today for just the fifth time this year. Whilst both of these teams will be looking on come finals time, they ll be using these last few rounds as a chance to test out their young players and see what they have ahead of next season. Both teams have shown some impressive signs this season Dean Giarrusso will be happy with the way his young team has improved as the season has gone on, with Ally Symons one of the keys to today s game given her accuracy in goals all season long, whilst Melton have also blooded a lot of their talented youngsters, with the experience of coach Renee Hulls and defender Katie Kakoschke also important in their development. This should be a good game. PREDICTION: Maybe going against the trend a little bit this week (and against my tip on this week s BFNL Netball Show), but going with BACCHUS MARSH to salute at home today. REDAN s season is all but on the line today as they host LAKE WENDOUREE at the City Oval today thanks to their 35-28 loss to Sebastopol last week, which has dropped them to two games behind the sixth-placed Burras, who have a guaranteed four points today due to the bye, meaning that if Redan can t overcome the Lakers today, they ll be three games behind Sebastopol with two games to play, and whilst they ll likely still be two games behind Ballarat given that the Swans play East Point today, the Swans have Bacchus Marsh next week in a game they ll start as favourites in, and whilst Redan have the bye, it could still be a bridge too far. Therefore, a win today is a must if the Lions want to extend their season beyond Round 18, although that s far from a lock against a Lakers side that are looking so much more dangerous with Melanie Allen back in the side, and who are eyeing off third spot on the ladder as well which they re a game behind at the moment, but with a better run home than the incumbents in third, Sunbury. PREDICTION: Unfortunately, I think today will be the death knell for the Lions, as LAKE WENDOUREE won t be showing them any compassion at all and will get the win. EAST POINT, now the only undefeated side in the league after a 39-31 win over North Ballarat City last week that has seem them firm in premiership betting to an almost unbackable state, take on a BALLARAT side that, whilst sitting in fifth place at the moment, aren t 100% secure in the top six at the moment and who will be throwing everything at the ladder leaders today. Kate McLeod has been in fantastic form in defence for East Point this year, as evidenced by her Stockland Player of the Week award this week, but she ll have her hands full with Swans shooter Kelly Moran today who has been in sublime touch of late, as evidenced by her 52 goal game against Melton South this week at a 95% shooting clip. PREDICTION: The Swans will back themselves in today, but the more experienced EAST POINT should be able to get the job done and stay undefeated. MELTON SOUTH are in for another challenge today as they welcome SUNBURY to the Melton Rec Reserve, although Panthers coach Melissa Climas has every right to be confident going into today s game. Whilst her team has suffered largish defeats over the past fortnight, they ve scored over 40 goals in each game, and with the Lions contingent of Rupertswood players likely unavailable today given the tyranny of distance between their two games, the Panthers will see themselves as a sneaky chance today. That being said, Sunbury s defensive trio of Monique Clark, Rachel Dovaston and skipper Beck Anstey are in great touch at the moment, and should be strong enough to hold Melton South to a losing score. PREDICTION: SUNBURY to get the job done, but it won t be by a great deal DARLEY face something that no BFNL side has had to do since the 2014 home-and-away season on Sunday at Eureka Stadium face NORTH BALLARAT CITY on the rebound after the Northies suffered their first loss since the 2014 First Elimination Final last weekend as East Point bested them 39-31. The second quarter, where the Roos owned them, cost the Northies their undefeated record last week, but coach Annie McCartin will use last weekend as a learning experience, and commit a few things to memory ahead of their likely Qualifying Final match-up in four weeks time. They ll get a challenge today though, especially early, as the Devils will be full of confidence after their last-up win over Redan. PREDICTION: Annie s Angels should be able to withstand that challenge though and put NORTH BALLARAT CITY back on the winners list. 10 BFNL RECORD 2016 WWW.BFL.VCFL.COM.AU 11

A MESSAGE FROM WORKSAFE AFL VICTORIA COUNTRY St Joseph s claims Herald Sun Shield Geelong s St Joseph s College has claimed the 2016 Division One Boys Herald Sun Shield over St Patrick s College in a thriller at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. Leading at every break, St Joseph s hope of securing its second Herald Sun Shield title was in the hands of St Patrick s, which had a kick after the siren to decide the champion. Down by a point in the dying seconds of the match, St Patrick s marked the ball inside 50 and lined up for a shot on goal to win the match and secure the school s seventh consecutive Herald Sun Shield. Unfortunately the fairy-tale finish was not to be for the St Patrick s faithful, with the kick going out on the full to hand St Joseph s its second Herald Sun Shield title in a decade. Progressing through to the Grand Final after convincing semi-final performances, the battle for the Division One title was always going to be a close one. Running out onto the game s biggest stage, St Joseph s applied scoreboard pressure early with multiple inside-50 entries. Yet despite having eight scoring shots to three, the scoreboard was even at quarter time on 13 points apiece. Accuracy in front of goal continued to plague the boys from Geelong in the second term, piling on 4.6 to open up a 17-point lead at the main break. With the game in the balance, the reigning premiers stepped it up a gear in the second half to wrestle momentum back in Ballarat s favour. St Patrick s ball use and efficiency in front of the big sticks proved fruitful in the third and final terms, but it was too little too late. The final score was 7.17 (59) to 8.10 (58). St Joseph s coach Chris Lynch said he was proud of his team for keeping to its structures and playing their brand of football until the very end. It was a pretty tense last quarter, that s for sure, Lynch said. Our poor kicking kept St Patrick s in the match and when they started to come back in the second half of the game they nearly took home the title, but we dug deep to fight it out. We felt we deserved to win the match and we were just really proud of the team to hold on and win the game. We set a goal at the start of the year to play a brand of football which would see us play on the MCG at the end of the year, so the fact that we were able to do that and get the win was extremely satisfying. Attention now turns to the Division One Girls Herald Sun Shield battle between reigning premier Methodist Ladies College and Ballarat Grammar. With both schools tasting victory just once before, the pair will be hoping to become the equal-best girls school in the competition s history when they meet in the decider later this month. BACCHUS MARSH COBRA S CHATTER MELTON BLOODS BANTER This Saturday the G B Forestry Cobras welcome Melton to Maddingley Park, In the football the seniors and U18 s have locked in a finals birth, the reserves are still in the finals race but must keep winning so every game is important. In the netball only the B & C grades have a possibility of playing finals however they also need to win each game. Cobra News Flash The G B Forestry Cobras would like to take this opportunity to thank all our player sponsors that came on board this year. This dedication and support does not go unrecognised so thank you to all those that have sponsored a player during the 2016 season. A massive congratulation s goes out to Malcolm Scott who was inducted into the Ballarat Football Netball League Hall of Fame last Wednesday night. This is a remarkable accomplishment and well deserved. As well as playing and coaching other teams in the BFL, Malcolm played over 100 games for the Cobras, was selected in the Cobras Team of the Era earlier this year, was the Cobras leading goal kicker on 5 occasions and also coached junior football at the Cobras. A Tragic Event Hits One of Our Own On a very sad note, Erin Shepheard one of our Bacchus Marsh Youth Girls (who lives in Melton) has been struck down with not one but two rare diseases brought on by a common virus. This will leave her in a permanent state of paralysis and bound to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. She has also had her vision impaired as a result of these infections. Erin is a beautiful outgoing 18 year old who was busy studying year 12 and working part-time at Bacchus Marsh IGA supermarket. Her one great love was playing woman s football for the Bacchus Marsh Football Netball Club Youth Girls Team. Please look out for tins and raffle books this weekend at the senior s v Melton. Or if you would rather, you could go to the following website and make a donation: https://www.gofundme.com/2gqs4pg We are off to the Marsh this week after a greatly appreciated rest last week. In the run down or should it be the lead up to the finals, the Bloods are in an interesting position. Seniors leapt into the final six after losing last week. (I will let the mathematicians work that one out ) Maths alone won t keep them there though as there are some challenging games ahead. Our Reserves are also in 6th place and looking pretty good at the moment. The mathematicians also say the Unders are in the finals to stay. It has been a while since the club has been in this position on the football ladders, so everyone is quite excited just now. Over on the Netball courts things are not quite so rosy with two sides in the finals race D Grade (6th) and the Under 19s (4th) Still, no counting the chickens until they hatch, there are still three rounds to go and three round of challenging football and netball they will be. Bacchus Marsh Fundraiser. The Cobras are running a fundraising campaign for one of their youth girls, Erin Shepeard, who has been struck down with a serious illness. There will be collection tins at the game on Saturday and the Cobras will be donating a share of the after game takings towards the cause. Social News. A few changes to the Social Calendar. The 1986 Reunion is now on the last game on August 20th. The Ladies Day Luncheon for August 20 has been cancelled. The 3K Draw has been rescheduled to take place on the evening of August 20, in conjunction with the season windup. More details will be forthcoming as we get closer to the end of the home and away season. Presentation Night is September 23rd. This year it will held at Stone Bar and Grill, High St, Melton just opposite the Fleece. Tickets are $95 a head ($85 for under 18 years of age) See Lisa Hurst and book your table and pay early (September 9th) as places are limited. The AGM is fast approaching and now is a good time to consider how you can help your club survive and compete in the ever challenging environment of competitive sport. Code of Conduct. Please do not forget our code of conduct. Copies can be read and downloaded from our website. Yelling abuse towards the umpires will NOT alter their decision on the day. There are proper processes to follow. Check the website www.meltonfnc.com.au for all the latest news from the Club, including the popular Daisy TV. Sponsor of the week is Jon Kay Agricultural Services. Jon is a passionate Bloods supporter and a life member of the club. More importantly perhaps, we buy our heater gas from him. On cold winter s evening at Maccy Park you can really appreciate his contribution to the club. Please don t forget our other sponsors, they are all helping to field the teams and keep the club running. GO BLOODS 32 BFNL RECORD 2016 WWW.BFL.VCFL.COM.AU 33

REDAN LIONS ROAR LAKE WENDOUREE LAKERS NOTES With the game being transferred to the Alfredton Reserve, we took to the field against Sebastopol. It was a clean sweep for the footy & only the A grade girls falling short on the netball court. The U18 s started the day with a big win, 10 different goal kickers, a great team effort. The Reserves kept the wins going, Nick Sullivan kicking 3 goals on his return. The Seniors took the field with 4 sets of brothers lining up, Colbert s, Giampaolo s, Horbury s & Watson s. We held a 20 point lead at the first change, Sebastopol then held us in the second quarter to be within 4 points. The boys put on a 7 goal third quarter to take control of the game a come out 55 point winners. With Lakers this week, a bye & then Ballarat to come before the finals campaign begins. The Netball courts saw U19 s, C, D, B grade all have good wins, with A grade just falling short by 7 goals. Some tough games ahead over the next 2 weeks. Good luck to all our teams today against Lake Wendouree GO LIONS Welcome everyone to the Isuzu Arena with at time of writing it looking like Redan moving their home game from the heavy City Oval to Lakerland. Given that both teams will feature in the finals it seems the sensible thing to do. The Lakers are coming off a much needed bye and hopefully it has given everyone a chance to freshen up and also a chance to get a few blokes back from travel and injury. Last game was against a red hot North City who proved too good in the football on their home deck. The netballers also lost narrowly in the big game after leading late into the game. On the Sunday we held our major raffle which was a raging success, all tickets were sold and a great time was had by all. It was fantastic to keep the prize within the club with Hugh Herben sharing the chocolates with Joe Black. Special mention to Brent Oz who coordinated the day brilliantly. Lawrence Mooney was hilarious and the talented Brad Simpson put on a great show afterwards. Special mention to Billy Anderson, Dave Henderson and Nick Clifton who sold a huge number of the tickets. Thanks to Mary, Julie, Nat, Denise, Caz and Maree with the catering a great job. We still have a long way to go yet but a reminder to everyone to set aside Friday night 23rd of September. That will be senior clubs presentation night and you must be there to see who wins the Joffa and the Sally. More information to be provided closer to the date. EAST POINT KANGAS CORNER BALLARAT SWAN S CHATTER Football: Today we welcome the Ballarat Swans to the Eastern Oval. The under 18.5 s will be looking to find their form again after a disappointing result last week in tricky conditions, I m sure the boys will be keen to bounce back. The Reserves continued their winning ways grinding out a 10 goal win, while in the Seniors will be looking for an improved performance today in order to take the points. Netball: Last week against North Ballarat City the 19/ Unders had a hard fought loss to the top team, they played their hearts out and pushed an unbeaten team to the final siren. D Grade was almost a carbon copy situation and result with a huge effort from all players in extremely cold and windy conditions. C and B Grades could not get the points this week but with determination and team work, will look to finish the season on a positive in their next 3 contests. A Grade- Match of the round between the top undefeated rivals saw marquee match-ups all over the court and what a game! A dominant second quarter by Eastpoint saw us lead by 6 at the main break, setting us up to control a tough second half with steady plays and drive. An 8 goal win was an awesome effort by the girls. Across the grades the standout players were: Kate McLeod, Emma Farrell, Rhiannon Witson, Crystal Ellis, Zoe Trembath, Liz Carson, Kelsie Stewart, Erin Burns, Rhiana Collins and Molly McLachlan. Family Day: The last home game for the East Point Kangaroos on August 13 is our family day and all are welcome. Bring your mum, dad, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles the whole family and friends to enjoy our last home game for season 2016. There will be a jumping castle and face painting for the kid along with great company with everyone from the East Point community. Social: A reminder that the Special Effort Raffle tickets have been handed to players to sell. The event is on Sunday the 14th August. Sell 4 and you get a freebie yourself so its worth the effort. This is the last major fundraiser of the year so its very important for the club Sponsors Day :Today the club welcomes all of its 2016 sponsors to the club for the afternoon from 1pm to 5pm to see the games V Ballarat and enjoy some hospitality. We thank you for your support throughout the 2016 season and hope enjoy the day. Today the Active Electrical Swans are across town to take on the East Point FNC. Last time the two clubs met was back in round 2 under the new lights at Active Electrical Oval Alfredton with the Ballarat Swans taking the points on that occasion and will be looking to remain on the winning list. Both Football and netball enjoyed a good day down the highway last week against the Melton FNC. The seniors and reserves brought back the points and all teams bar B Grade were successful. Congratulations to Ash Madder, who just recently played his 100th reserve game, played his first senior game last week it was a long time coming. MELTON SOUTH PANTHER PRESS SUNBURY LIONS SNIPPETS Today we take on an old rival Sunbury. We have had some great tussles over the years. Lets hope today is one we can put in the vault. We also welcome our 1991 Under 18 s Premiership side back for their 25 year reunion. We welcome the boys in at half time and after the game for some refreshment. Thanks to The Bruv (Scotty) for organising the get together. Football- Well, well, well. Same old story. The boys played competitive first half and showed signs of good footy. Don t know what happens at half time but it was a different side. It s a massive privilege to pull on this jumper and play for this club. Pride in performance is all we ask. Effort will take you a long way. There is 2 games left so lets play with #PantherPride. The reserves started well and were in front at quarter time, but one quarter of footy let us down. The boys fought it out but fell short in the end. Two old timers, Leggsy and Zip, were the better players and past legend Reardo made a guest appearance with 2 goals. The Unders kept their finals hopes alive with a good win. The boys are getting together at the right time of year. Better players were Brodes, Patty and Fez. Netball- A disappointing day for the girls with only the B Grade having a win. The old saying is it s how you bounce back. Lets get some wins on the board and hope some of the grades push through to finals. Good luck to all the girls involved! Social- A great night was had by all at our hypnotist night. A lot of laughter on the night and weird stuff performed. Thanks to Mel and Pam for organising. We can say all our functions this year have been a hit. Next week is past players day. Make sure you let anyone know who played at the Panthers that they are more than welcome to enjoy the day against our arch enemy. Be sure to see Pam or Dracca for our Reverse Draw tickets. This will be held in two weeks on the Saturday 20th August. See our notes for more info next week. Volunteers of the week- To all the people who braved getting up to be hypnotised. Without you all it would of been an uneventful night! Sponsors of the week- SGA Engineering For all your steel fabrication or steel sales be sure to see Ted or Derek. We thank you for all your ongoing support this year and in previous years. International Cranes If you need a cane give Adam or Peter Leggett a call. Thanks for your support. It s people like you guys that help to keep this club the way we like it. We all know The Bruv is a pretty laid back sort of guy, but we have never seen him more relaxed than on Saturday night. He must of had a big week at work because all he did was sleep. As you would say Bruv, Come on man! Until next week, The Prowling Panther #PantherPride Well finally we have the McMahon Pavilion and change rooms back, it has been a long season using the temp village out the back but thanks goes to everyone who has had to deal with and adjust what would not be the norm, from coaching staff, trainers, players and all of the support staff and supporters. Thanks also to the Hume City Council for their efforts in getting us in just in time for the last 2 home games and the run into the finals, there was some happy coaches and players with the new facility things should return to normal pretty quick. The Youth Girls have had good wins in the finals, the U15 s in their first season have won both games and need one more to progress to the GF while the U18 s had a win and have advanced straight to the GF, the senior Women finished 4th and play their first final on Sunday at Northcote, good luck to all of the girls they really have embraced the winning way at the Sunbury Lions. Don t forget your Last Man Standing- Reverse Draw whatever you want to call it tickets, all players have them for sale so don t forget to sell them or buy one, the draw will be the next home game against North Ballarat City which will also be the next Presidents Lunch with Mark Harvey as the Guest Speaker, tickets available from Sando or Hedley, we also have the catering for the finals, we will be calling on people, players, family, supporters,( Coey, Werner and the Donoghues have already offered) to assist with this, we won t be asking too much just some time from you to help cook and serve, it is extremely important that we represent the Club well with this as it is important from a financial point. Please see the next announcement. Press Release Sunbury Lions Senior & Junior Football/Netball clubs have commenced talks regarding a proposed merger of the 2 clubs. Although there has always been a loose connection this has never been a formal link. A steering committee with representatives from both the Junior & senior committees has been set up to consider the idea. The potential merger would see change for both clubs and it is important that we understand what this looks like, to gather information, clarify and determine the best way forward for all concerned. It is important that we remain open and transparent with our members and keep them abreast of the situation as ultimately it will be the members who will decide. We would like to invite all of our Junior & Senior Football/ Netball club members & parents to an information night to be held in the history room at Clarke Oval, Sunbury on Tuesday the 16th of August commencing at 7pm. The night will be chaired by ex Sunbury Lions Juniors President John Hansen with all of the representatives from the steering committee in attendance to answer any questions. Signed by: The combined committees of the Sunbury Lions Junior & Senior Football/Netball Clubs. 46 BFNL RECORD 2016 WWW.BFL.VCFL.COM.AU 47

NORTH BALLARAT CITY DARLEY DIARY Our White Ribbon day V East Point was very successful and the boys had a terrific win in the senior game. There was a strong wind at the start of the game and we got a great lead in the first quarter which held us in good stead for the rest of the game. It was a great win as we come into the pointy end of the season. Derick Micallef s 8 goals gave him best on ground and the radio broadcaster s something to talk about! Our reserves again lost against a very solid East Point team and our U/18.5 s had a terrific win with only minimal numbers in the team so all bodes well for the finals for them, all boys contributing to the win. Thank you to the Ballarat White Ribbon committee for their support on the day and Simone O Brien for coming along to the day to toss the coin and to speak to players and supporters. It was much appreciated and left everyone admiring her courage and determination. Our senior jumpers looked terrific with the White Ribbon design and we hope to make it an annual event. Thank you to everyone also for cooperating during this difficult time with the grandstand redevelopment, it is much appreciated. Good luck to all competing today. Go North. FOOTBALL: We are coming off the bye and welcome back some much needed senior experience in today s line up. Unfortunately our rehab section is far busier than the oval at the moment, however with injury comes opportunity for others and we would like to congratulate our debutants that have played senior football over recent weeks / months. You have all done a great job representing the DFNC jumper. Today we play guests to North City at Eureka in a healthy rivalry that has grown over the years. Take every opportunity with both hands. Our Reserve grade boys have used 51 players out of necessity this year and we hope we can get some injured players back on the park. Our U18 boys are no exception from the injury woes and hope they can settle their 22 heading into September. Good luck today gents. NETBALL: What a fantastic win for our A grade ladies last game against Redan. Dug deep to get the result, well done ladies!!! It shows what you are all capable of and hope to see you continue this form into season 2017. SOCIAL: The DFNC would like to publically thank Dane Swan who had everyone in the palm of his hand at our inaugural Sponsors Day Lunch. Dane was hilarious and was great with all of our supporters, in particular with all the kids. We hope all of our sponsors had a fantastic day and thanks for your support. COMING UP Vote Count Day (yes we are bringing it back full vote counts for all grades), Presentation Night and AFL Grand Final Day. Stay tuned for scheduled dates so you don t miss out on what are to be 3 fantastic final social functions for 2016. DARLEY DEN: It is with much regret that our senior coach Jarrod Tuddy Edwards announce his resignation from coaching post the 2016 season. Tuddy has grown and handled the position of senior coach nothing short of outstanding, not to mention winning us the elusive Premiership Cup last year. Tuddy advised the committee of his decision pre-season this year and with respect of his decision we awaited the right time for him to tell his players first and foremost. Tudd is looking forward to some quality family time with his girls after a hectic and extremely busy 3 years. We hope he will continue to play (if he can get the old body up) and know that he will assist where he can going forward. We would also like to thanks Ally at this time for being a single parent between March and October for the last few years and not only that, but helping out on social committee and organising so many events herself throughout this time! You guys are amazing with the amount of time you have put into our club and we appreciate it to no end. With this change, we now look onwards and upwards to more exciting times ahead. The appointment of a new coach is underway and we look forward to that announcement at season s end. Who am I?? NETBALL REPORT By AFL Goldfields Netball Manager Kim Bailey Confident Girls is the main grass roots campaign of the Netball Foundation the fundraising arm of Netball Australia and partner of the Australian Netball Diamonds team. We know that sport is a powerful tool in empowering girls to be happy and healthy. Every week, millions of girls around Australia walk off the court with the confidence that comes from being part of a team, enjoying the bond of a shared experience and the benefits of regular exercise. They also build the kind of resilience that is learnt from winning and losing, and taking the good with the bad. But for many reasons, not all girls have the chance to participate. In Australia, more than 600,000 children live below the poverty line and don t have the opportunity to be part of a sporting team. Many families cannot afford to pay sport fees, buy a uniform and shoes to play in, or get transport to sporting events. Some schools don t offer sports activities or have the money to buy equipment. And unfortunately, many girls lack the selfconfidence to get involved or their cultural background doesn t encourage them to be physically active. Confident Girls has already supported more than 10,000 girls through community netball programs since founded last year. In 2016, an improved Confident Girls campaign is aiming to raise $250,000 towards netball programs such as Inclusion NetSetGO program and community introductory programs, utilising a new peer to peer fundraising platform hosted by the Australian Sports Foundation. The campaign and platform launched on 22 April 2016 and will be in two rounds: April June to coincide with the start of the netball season and September November to coincide with the end of the netball season. Although fundraising can happen at any time of the year. The core target audiences are private schools, netball school ambassadors, grass roots netball clubs, NetSetGO centres, workplaces of netball players and Netball Australia commercial partners. Netball Australia have plenty of tools and resources to help you register and support the campaign. You could also win some great prizes, including tickets to watch the Diamonds play and a coaching clinic from Diamond s Head Coach, Lisa Alexander. Netball Foundation Chair, Noeleen Dix says Confident Girls aims to give more girls the chance to build confidence both on and off the court. Australian women know how important their social networks are; and Netball friendships are at the core of that network for many of us, Dix says. Netball is in just about every community in Australia but there are some girls who can t access it. Confident Girls aims to provide programs to take Netball to everyone. Australian Sports Foundation CEO, Patrick Walker is delighted to be partnering with a campaign that can impact the lives of many. We look forward to helping many more disadvantaged girls enjoy the health and social benefits of playing Netball, Walker says. 100% of funds raised goes to support Confident Girls. To register and donate head to www.confidentgirls.com.au Last week we saw the highly anticipated game between one and two on the ladder in East Point and North Ballarat and we weren t disappointed in what was a game that showed what a wonderful standard of netball we have in our league. North suffered their first defeat in nearly two seasons which will give East Point the confidence to go into the final series as the premiership favourites. Sebastapol booked its place in the finals series with a spirited win over Redan. Redan s loss now places them 2 games out of the six and with a hard draw ahead. They will have to win all of their remaining games and rely on others to lose to play finals. This week Ballarat will see where they sit when they come up against East Point. Ballarat s Kelly Moran had an amazing game last weekend shooting at 97% accuracy and she will need to continue with this great work if Ballarat are to go deep into the final series. Good luck to all teams. Happy Netballing. 60 BFNL RECORD 2016 WWW.BFL.VCFL.COM.AU 61
