From the President Happy New Year! Happy New Year to all our members, their families, and friends. We have lost many members, family members, and friends in 2016. Let us remember to enjoy and appreciate everyone in all that we do. We have great opportunities to enjoy one of the many things that we love which is dancing. Let us not take that for granted. Your board is working hard to continue our dancing venues, our monthly dances, and we are gearing up for Meet Me At The Beach. Know that your board of directors does none of this on their own, we always need your help! So, talk to any board member, email the club, or call me directly (301-335-1151). Your future help is greatly appreciated. This year, 2017, is an election year for our club. Remember, if you are not a member of the DC Hand Dance Club by March 1, 2017, according to our bylaws, you may not vote in this election nor run for office. So, if you have not done so already, renew your membership! The Nominating Committee will be formed after Meet Me At The Beach. They will handle our nominations in June and our election in August. This year our theme for Meet Me At the Beach is March Madness, Mad Hatter! The Adult version of Alice in Wonderland, do your research! Many fun events, games, and a special Chinese Auction is planned for your enjoyment. Meet You On the Dance Floor! Spotlight! On Gay & Roy Rodey By Nancy Sabella-Roussell If relationships are the key to happiness, then Gay & Roy Rodey are living a wonderful life. Now in their 15 th year of marriage, they met while dancing at Coconuts in Crofton, MD. Because each had prior marriages that ended in divorce, they claim they were not looking for or expecting another marriage. However, when Roy spotted Gay on the dance floor one night, he took a chance that she could follow his Baltimorean style of hand dance that was popular at teen clubs in Severna Park and seen on the Buddy Dean Show. Gay began dancing at 6 th grade teen club, growing up in Forest Heights, MD; drew her influence from the Milt Grant Show seen on Washington, DC area TV. She continued dancing throughout her first marriage and was introduced to DCHDC by friend Judy Martin, and says she s been a steady customer ever since. Professionally, Gay worked for a Federal judge at the U.S. Tax Court in Washington, DC and has enjoyed retirement since 2010. Roy retired in 2009 from IBEW as a Master Electrician. Following their first dance, the couple spent more time together, took some dance lessons from Louise Pyles and love blossomed. After what Gay describes as an exciting 14-month courtship, they treated themselves to a big wedding, with a very handsome wedding party of children and siblings as attendants. Now their blended family consists of three great grandchildren, 11 grandchildren and 8 children (one of Roy s sons is now deceased) spanning the globe from Georgia, Colorado, Virginia Beach and Crofton, MD, in the U.S. to London, England. This distance makes family reunions challenging, but Gay celebrated a milestone birthday this year (she s not saying which one) and the family was able to celebrate together in Florida during the summer. Holidays are a special time for a big family and the 2016 season was no exception. With young children and teens in the family, Gay and Roy are busy shopping and mailing lots of love, dresses, dolls, archery sets and gymnastic mats among other items. They are also celebrating their 11- year-old grandson s appearance in 31 performances of the Fords Theater production of A Christmas Carol. Gay says with pride that she plans to attend the production at least three times. In addition to sharing some of their dance turns at the last Meet Me at the Beach, Roy is serving his second year as the DCHDC 2nd Vice President. This provides an opportunity to meet more people and he says they are happy to give back to a group that has meant so much to them both. For example, in the aftermath of a recent serious auto accident that totaled their car, they were moved by phone calls and generous offers of assistance from so many club members. Gay calls the club a real family. You can find Gay and Roy dancing 2 to 3 times weekly most often at Alibis, Dockside, Union Jacks and occasionally Perry s. They also attend the monthly club dances and travel to the annual Meet Me at the Beach event in Ocean City, MD. They have participated in several Richmond Shag Club events and enjoy the variety of dancing with other groups. Their next dance challenge is to learn Salsa for visits to Cancun, Mexico.
