Term 2 Issue 8 Friday 8th June 2018 CANOBOLAS STAFF GET ACTIVE Last Friday was Staff Active Day. Many teachers came dressed in their Active Wear. Thank you to the PDHPE Faculty and Year 11 SLR for leading a fitness circuit at lunch. Thank you also to the students who watched and supported the staff to be active. This term many of the staff are involved in the Premier s Sporting Challenge and are monitoring the number of steps they do each day. Prizes are awarded each week to encourage the staff to increase their fitness and get active.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL S DESK Dear Parents and Members of the School Community It has been a busy two weeks since I last wrote to you. As we get closer to the end of term, it seems that we try to fit more and more activities into our already busy schedule. SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR Once again in 2018 our school will be involved in the Schools Spectacular performances in Sydney. This major production brings thousands of students from public schools across the state together, showcasing the creative arts. Our Aboriginal dancers have been successful, through an audition process, in gaining a place in the cast. We are very excited to see how the production comes together. ASSESSMENT AND REPORTS Our junior students have been involved in finalising their assessment tasks for the first half of the year over the last few weeks. Teachers are now busily preparing reports for Semester One and these will be posted out to families before the end of term. As always if you feel that there is something in the report that you would like to discuss either with a specific teacher, or your child s Year Adviser, please do not hesitate to contact the school to make an appointment. The Year Seven students, as part of their Integrated Project Based Learning, have also been involved in presenting their exhibitions for their two latest projects, To Bee or Not To Bee and Natural Born Killer. The work that the students have completed is of a high standard, and it was very pleasing seeing the students present their work to their classmates. Year 8 will be exhibiting their two projects, Waterworld and Art of War, later in Week 7. VARIATIONS OF ROUTINE Term 2 is always busy with excursions, particularly with sporting fixtures. Can I remind families that for students to attend these events, the official permission note needs to be returned to the Front Office. Due to Department of Education regulations we are not able to accept handwritten notes, or verbal permission for students to attend excursions. Replacement notes can be collected by students from the teacher organising the excursion, or the Front Office. EQUIPMENT A reminder that students need to bring their basic equipment to school everyday to ensure that they are ready to learn. Exercise books, pens and a lead pencil are the absolute basic necessities for a student to be successful. Can I ask families to ensure that students have this equipment each day. If there are any reasons why this presents a difficulty please contact me at the school and we can organise to assist students. He was rejected by his mother and needed bottle feeding so Ms Baylis kindly offered to look after him. Thanks Ms Baylis!
ENGLISH FACULTY NEWS It's been a busy first half of the term for our p u b l i c s p e a k e r s a n d debaters. Congratulations to Catie SmithGronow and Brock Anderson who gave excellent speeches at the CWA Public Speaking competition at All Saints College, on the topics of 'Speaking Up' and 'Space'. A big congratulations must also go to our junior and senior debating teams who competed in the Lithgow Festival of Speech last week. Our enthusiastic team of Year 7 students (Brock Anderson, Emily Haig and Monique Fahy-Perry) argued that not all people should be vegetarians. They represented the school extremely well, competing against the other junior teams which all consisted of Year 9 students. Our senior team (Harry Betts, Kane Mitchell and Victoria Ruming) also did very well and won their debate against Lithgow High School, arguing that people should not feel guilty for killing zombies.
On Tuesday, the 29 th May two students from Canobolas High School represented the school in the Open s Table Tennis tournament. The students, Jayden Zegzula and Luke D Elboux, both in Year11 played tremendously well against some fierce competition. The competition included both individual and doubles games. Luke was our No.1 ranked player with Jayden playing at No. 2 The first round was against Blayney High School. They played well but unfortunately were defeated in both their singles and doubles matches. The second round saw some considerable improvements as we took on Lithgow High School. We beat them for and against in the total number of sets won. Our last round we faced the CHS champions Warren High School. This was always going to be challenging, but both boys stepped up and played extremely well against a tough opponent. We put up a brave battle in both singles and doubles but they were unable to match their spin and precision. Luke and Jayden both demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship skills and were a pleasure to coach. The school and I are both proud of your achievements! Well done! Miss L Abrahams
The Open Boys Volleyball team travelled to Bathurst on Friday 28th May, to compete in the WSSA Knockout competition. With a few late call ups to the team, the boys came together nicely. With Narromine High School unable to attend, the boys played against the junior Kelso High School team. What an outstanding outfit they were and a fantastic warm up game for us. The boys worked on their 3 hit options, blocking at the net and spiking. The boys then came up against Blayney High who are always a tough competitor. The boys put together some great attacking sets, especially Bless Afoa, Mungo Pogson and Jayden Baker, whilst James Gogala and Harry Betts were fantastic at the net, blocking spikes. With Blayney coming away with the win, the Canobolas boys went up against Forbes High School. Andrew Gogala and Lachlan Griffiths showed great skills against Forbes and Harry Pearce definitely got the crowd involved. With Forbes High being too good on the day, the boys got an early mark and had a lovely lunch together,
The Open Girls League Tag team travelled to Red Bend Catholic College on Tuesday 29th May to participate in the Country Cup League Tag Carnival. The girls faced Red Bend 2 in the first game of the carnival. After a slow start the girls eventually ran out winners 16-4, with tries to Erin Naden and two to Kiara Sulllivan. Kiara was also handy in front of goal, kicking one and Kyah Sullivan the other. In the second game of Pool C the girls faced St Johns 1, this was a hard fought game with the winner progressing to the semi finals. The girls rallied as a team to run out victors 16-4 with tries to Jada Murphy and two tries to Erin Naden. Kyah was handy with the boot again kicking two conversions. The girls then faced Dubbo South Campus in the Semi Final, unfortunately the girls went down 16-0. All of the girls played some great football over the course of the day and should be commended for their sportsmanship. A big thankyou to prac student Miss Kempson for running the water and being the number one supporter on the day.
On Thursday 31st May, nine Canobolas students travelled to Canowindra to referee games at their annual Rural Cup. The Rural Cup is an interschool sporting carnival involving Canowindra, Oberon and Molong High School. Canowindra was hosting Oberon High School. Our students refereed a variety of basketball, touch football and soccer matches for both junior and senior teams. Well done to all the boys for their efforts, professionalism and knowledge in refereeing each of the sports. Well done on representing Canobolas so well and continuing a productive partnership in the community. A big thank you goes to Canowindra High School for giving our students a great refereeing opportunity and warmly welcoming us on the day. The students were very privileged to join the staff from Oberon and Canowindra for a delicious lunch. Hope to see you again next year!! A big thanks also goes to Mrs Hurford for organising the day.
Congratulations to our Aboriginal dance students who auditioned, and were successful in making it into the 2018 Schools Spectacular. We were excited to hear that we were successful in our audition video and will now be looking to fill the places with auditions running at school on Friday the 8 th of June. Schools Spectacular is a wonderful opportunity for students who will stay in Sydney for a week in November, to attend rehearsals and perform at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic Park. Great job to the students who were filmed for the video!
On Friday the 1 st of June, 14 students from Year 11 SLR, Year 10 Dance and Big Picture attended an exercise class as part of their Fitness units. Students went to the Pilates Movement Therapy Studio in town and were taken through a variety of exercises from Veronica. Students used the TRX bands, sandbells, bosu balance balls, dumbbells and steps! They were taken through a fusion track that involved boxing and kicking. Then finally to finish, they were taken through a yoga stretch flow. Teachers and students were worked extremely hard and it was a great way to finish off the week! Miss Woods and Miss Lee were very proud of how hard the students worked!
The NSW CHS Boys Basketball Championships was held in Broken Hill from the 8-10 May. This year Canobolas had two representatives Harry Betts and Connor Taylor. Harry was the starting Centre for the Western team. He played a key role in Western s pool round wins over Riverina (60-57) and North Coast (47-41) as well his teams losses to Finalists Sydney East (51-73) and Sydney North (49-54). Harry had a huge impact in the playoff for 5th, where Western defeated Hunter (79-57). Harry also assisted with refereeing the Final. Connor was a last minute recruit as a referee for the Championships. He refereed extremely well, and received praise from some of the more difficult coaches. Connor s effort was rewarded with being assigned to a Semi Final. Harry has been nominated to attend the All Schools Championships in Darwin as a referee. Connor then followed up the CHS Boys Basketball Championships with another trip back to Broken Hill, this time to referee the PSSA Girls Basketball Championships from the 29-31 May. Connor received praise for his commitment and referee skills from the referee s coordinator. Again, Connor was rewarded with a Semi Final and was unlucky not to be assigned to the Gold Medal Game. Canobolas High School, would like to welcome Mr Ewin as he embarks on his teaching placement. Mr Ewin is a Blayney local, who is currently studying at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst. Mr Ewin is with us for four weeks on his first placement and will be working alongside Miss Woods. We wish you all the best on your placement.
Indoor Soccer Canobolas went through the Western R e g i o n A W D I n d o o r S o c c e r Championships UNDEFEATED on the 29 May. The team played a strong first game against a competitive Lithgow HS side and came away 7-0 winners. This was followed by an easy game against Anson Street SSP where great sportsmanship was displayed. Canobolas ran away winners 10-0. Carenne Gold was the next game the toughest round game. A great defensive game allowed Canobolas to win 3-0. It took Canobolas until the fourth game of the day against Oberon to concede a goal. Despite this, they won 7-1. The final round game versus Carenne Blue was any other easy game, with Canobolas winning 6-0. The Grand Final was contested between Canobolas and Carenne Gold. It was a very close game, with both teams making excellent shots on goal. Canobolas was lucky to come away with a 3-2 victory. Nick Clark received the Most Valuable Male Player and Kenya Lacey was awarded the Most Valuable Female Player. Boccia Blake Swain, Sachin Stephens, Alec Turnbull and Alex Walker represented Canobolas in the Western AWD Boccia competition held on 5 June. Canobolas was unlucky to come up against reigning champions Dubbo High in the first round, going down 5-2. This was followed by a defeat by Carenne SSP in a playoff. The final game was a victory in a playoff against Dunedoo Central.
INNOVATION FACULTY NEWS 8 Ascari have been working hard over the last few weeks to complete their Medieval films before exhibition next week. The school community should prepare itself to learn about feuding kingdoms, the Crusades, the day to day lives of weapon makers and a totally true account of the very real life of King Arthur and his knights. Everyone is invited to watch Ascari s Project B exhibition films between 2.40 and 3.20pm Wednesday 13th June! Ms H Lloyd
Year 7 STEM STEM CENTRE NEWS Year 7 STEM classes have been applying the mathematics concept of ratios to determine who can make the slender tower, the tallest possible tower with the narrowest base. This challenge is inspired by 432 Park Ave, New York, a skyscraper known for how tall and narrow it is. The application of a height vs width ratio helps us determine the winner. Before commencing the task, Year 7 STEM visited 432 Park Ave using the Virtual Reality (VR) equipment donated by Samsung Australia! Year 8 STEM Year 8 STEM students have been exploring circuits, switches and conductivity using Makey Makey microcontrollers and Playdough to make computer game controllers!
Year 8 STEM exploring circuit inputs and outputs using Littlebits! Littlebits are electrical components that magnetically connect to make circuits with LED lights, temperature sensors and motors. These can be used to make STEM projects, like we will use the Makey Makey to make our own Operation board games. Engineering as a STEM Career Year 11 and 12 Engineering studies students caught up with Canobolas alumni Mitch Beasley on Tuesday at CSU Engineering s EngFest in Bathurst. CSU Engineering have an innovative course that trains engineers in a project-based learning model, including four one-year paid cadetships.
