It s a great time of year to live on the Jersey Shore so enjoy it to the fullest. JSR held a New Members Night on June 20 at Woody s Roadside Tavern. As the invitation for the event stated, it was open to all members who wished to attend. It was great to talk to new and old members and get ideas on what events the club should do. Provided there is enough interest, we will hold similar events in the future. That brings me to my next topic. We are noticing a trend that has the board members a bit perplexed. That is, the tendency to defer signing up or responding to an event. I d like to encourage all of you reading this to turn interest into action because two of our biggest events of the year are coming up fast, those being our Summer Picnic at Monmouth Park and our Driver Education event at New Jersey Motorsports Park. We ve got the word out on these events, including the Shoreline, e-mails, our website, and FaceBook page. However, we have not seen the expected number of respondents yet. We believe the interest is there but as I know all too well myself, procrastination sometimes gets the better of us. Let me try to help you past that. At the risk of repeating what is already in the announcement, our picnic at Monmouth Park on July 14 will be a day to remember. We ve priced the tickets at only $25 per person, with the club kicking in the rest. It s a bargain when you consider what is all included. It s a family friendly event too with children 12 and under free. Of members I ve spoken to about the event, there is plenty of enthusiasm. If you have it on your calendar and know you want to go, please make the call or send the e-mail right now to Mike Monteleone and let us know you will attend. Don t just put it off to another time because you may risk missing out on it. Our Thunder in the Pines DE, taking place on August 21-22, is now in its sixth year. We always get a lot of positive feedback and many repeat participants. If you re a newcomer to DE, I must say, it s the most thrilling drive you will have in your car. Ask your fellow members who have done DEs or reach out to any club officer to learn more. Here again, if the event is on your mind and/or calendar but you haven t signed up, what are you waiting for? By registering today, you can turn your attention to gearing up for the event both mentally and with making preparations. You don t want to be scrambling at the last minute to do all of that because the event wasn t locked in on your radar. Hopefully, I ve provided you with a little extra nudge to turn interest into action and that we ll see you at our picnic and DE. And one last note. Both these events are open to non-members and non-porsches so by all means, invite your friends, coworkers, and family. For the good times to be had, they ll thank you for it later.

The Shoreline July - August 2013 Page 4 Dealer Perspective By Brandon Harris This past Sunday, April 28 th, we held our third Porsches at the Beach event at Pier Village in Long Branch, NJ. To say it was a complete success would be an understatement. With all 50 spots reserved a week before the show, I had to put a request in for 10 more spots. All 60 spaces were filled with Porsches of all different types and spanning the company s entire existence. Two representatives from the Monmouth County Boys and Girls Club were in attendance displaying some of the children s art and supporting our event, which was in turn in support of them. Thanks to everyone in attendance, we managed to raise over $1,200 for this group which helps the local community s kids. We did things a little differently this year, and plan on making this event bigger and better every year. This year we had three different classes: Boxster/Cayman, Water-Cooled and Air-Cooled. I d like to congratulate the following attendees for their wins: Boxster/ Cayman Water-Cooled Air- Cooled 1 st Doga Ozturk Maximicano Bottino Bill Kreig 2 nd Michael Wensch Tony Arcure Ed Malcolm 3 rd Jim Sechiano Danny Marcos Alphonse Edouard We had some beautiful trophies to hand out and even included a crowd favorite, which went to a beautiful Guards red 997 S. I would also like to thank McLoones for once again catering our event. Not only did Continued on page 9 2013 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. The Shoreline July - August 2013 Page 9 Continued from page 4 we have enough food for everyone, but it was great! Over the last three years, we ve made it my goal to make this one of the area s best car shows and I believe we re on our way there. Not only are we helping a great cause, but we re having a great time while doing it. We also gave everyone a sneak peak of the 2014 Cayman, which was later, unveiled that week at the Molly Pitcher Inn. We would also like to thank them for their help in making that a great event. We had over 50 attendees throughout the night. If you have any questions regarding the all-new version, please don t hesitate to contact us. As always, please feel free to contact me with different ideas, as we ll continue to make Porsches at the Beach and event we can all enjoy even more. Stay tuned for other future events as the season rolls along. It s prime driving season, so make sure you get out there and enjoy your Porsches! Drive Safe and Drive Fun! Many PCA members have asked questions regarding Drivers Education and if you have never tried it, it can be confusing to understand. In a nutshell, Drivers Education (DE as it is commonly referred to) is a program developed by the PCA to allow drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to drive on real racetracks. Drivers learn more about their car and its handling in a fun environment. You must be at least 18 years old and hold a current drivers license. I may be a little bit biased, but a DE event is one of the most exciting opportunities you will ever have behind the wheel of your Porsche outside of actual wheel to wheel racing. Almost every Porsche ever built will qualify to attend our events, no matter what the age of the car. Typically a DE event is run from 1-3 days. The Jersey Shore Region is hosting a two day event August 21st and 22nd at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ. These events are open to all members and we hope you can attend. You may register online at www. clubregistration.net. If you need any assistance please email me at: trackchair@jsrpca.com or give me a call at 732-598-7348. More information on these two tracks can be found a www.njmp.com. Each day will have up to five driving groups (divided by experience and skill level) who each go out 4 or 5 times for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Groups are divided to ensure maximum safety and fun by enabling you to drive with similarly experienced drivers at similar speeds. In the novice groups, drivers are accompanied by instructors who will teach you high performance driving techniques and fundamentals. A Drivers Education event is not however, racing or even preparation for racing. The events are not timed and there are no prizes. We intentionally restrict passing zones to straight areas of the track to ensure your safety and we strictly enforce all safety rules. Drivers Education is run by many PCA Regions throughout the summer and any PCA member can generally participate at any regions DE events. Some PCA regions restrict entrants to drive Porsches only while others allow other makes of sports cars. You can contact each regions Track Chair if you have any questions. The Jersey Shore Region accepts all marques of cars for our events. Generally speaking, any Porsche that is in good safe working order will be acceptable for entry in any Drivers Education event. Depending on the Regions specific rulings, the same can be said of most cars produced by any other makers that may be accepted. The only consistent exceptions are that some cabriolets be equipped with a roll bar. The Jersey Shore Region requires that your vehicle undertake a Technical Inspection given by a recognized The Shoreline July - August 2013 Page 10 What Exactly is a Drivers Education Event? By Greg Pfremmer, Track Chair Jersey Shore Tech Inspector. These Inspections must be undertaken prior to arrival at the event and are intended primarily to ensure the safety and trackworthiness of your vehicle. Both Schneider+Nelson Porsche and Bodymotion provide these inspections. Details of these inspections along with a downloadable tech form will be available on our website. We will also post the tech inspection forms in future issues of The Shoreline as we get closer to our track dates. Tech inspections are generally performed 1-2 weeks before your event. Bodymotion, located at 21 Cindy Lane, Ocean, NJ is providing a free tech inspection prior to our event starting at 6:30 pm on August 8th. The first time on the track, you really don t have to do anything special to your car. Your regular seats and seat belts will be just fine. As your driving skills progress, you may want to upgrade things like brake fluid, tires, seats or restraint (seat belt) systems. Check for specific details regarding the installation of racing harnesses, racing seats and the need for equal restraints on both passenger and driver seats. Also be aware that many tracks restrict permissible noise, a modified exhaust may not be acceptable. All PCA Drivers Education events require that you wear a helmet while on the track. The Jersey Shore Region requires that these helmets meet at least the SA2005, SA2010, M2005 or M2010. In all cases SA is strongly recommended for their fire safety qualities. You may purchase or rent a helmet for the event. Drivers in advanced run groups will be required to have a fire extinguisher mounted in a metal bracket and bolted to a metal surface. I have to admit that I am hooked on DE. I spend many days at the track and I am constantly thinking about the next time there. Once you attend a DE event and experience the thrill of high speed driving, you just want more. Many DE participants live for the rush of adrenaline that comes from moments like hitting 150 mph just before jumping on the brakes at the bus stop at Watkins Glen or sometimes it is the thrill of powering through an apex at New Jersey Motorsports Park. But, just as important is the camaraderie of fellow Porsche enthusiasts, and the enjoyment of discussing the days events throughout the day and in the evening with friends at a great restaurant. Just the drive to a track with Porsche friends is a blast. Five to fifteen Porsches cruising together on the Garden State Parkway or NJ Turnpike on the way to a driving event is absolutely thrilling! As one PCA member put it, it is a way of life in the summer. Please consider joining us, I look forward to seeing you on the track.
