All 11 Owls that saw the floor scored, being led by redshirt junior forward Raven Doyle, who had a double-double, and junior point guard Malia Kency, who put up a team-high 16 points. A trio of Owls hit double-digits in scoring with Kency leading the way with 16 points, 12 of which were generated from beyond the arc. Doyle was named FAU Player of the Game after an impressive performance highlighted by 12 points and 11 rebounds along with three assists. Freshman forward Katelyn O Reilly had 11 points. The offense also was helped along by Julia Jenike who had a team-high six assists in just 11 minutes of play. On the boards, FAU was represented well by returners Melinda Myers and Ra Kyra Gabriel who had eight and seven rebounds, respectively. On the Court with Coach Jay It was a good first game, especially for our freshmen to get out here and get some of the nerves out, get on the court and get in front of the fans. I thought the freshmen came out and they did some good things for us. I also am not surprised from what we saw from her (Raven Doyle) today because that s what we have been seeing from her in the past couple months. Game 2 FAU 70, Indiana State 67 - Nov. 14, 2016 FAU (2-0) moved to 2-0 on the season after going down to the wire with Indiana State (1-1) and clinching a 70-67 win in the waning seconds. The Owls rode to victory on the backs of returning juniors Nika Zyryanova, who had a career-high 20 points, and Sasha Cedeno, who came away with 17 of her own and six boards. FAU Player of the Game Zyryanova set a new career-high with 20 points on 8-of-14 shots and 4-for- 6 from the perimeter. Cedeno went 5-for-8 from beyond the arc and had a total of 17 points and six defensive rebounds. Forward Raven Doyle again had an impressive performance on defense with a team-leading 10 boards while junior guard Malia Kency had a personal best six assists, The team shot a season-high 62.5 percent from the field in the first quarter as 10-of-16 shots hit their mark. The Owls won the turnover battle earning 19 points off of Indiana State s 16 turnovers. On the Court with Coach Jay I was proud of our rebounding effort. I was also extremely proud of when they (ISU) went on a run in the third quarter and went up six or seven; having a young team like we do we could have easily folded, but I thought we held our composure and fought to take the lead back. Sasha was feeling it tonight, so we tried to get her some open looks and some shots. Overall I really like our fight. We have to continue to stay together.

Game 6 FAU 67, Richmond 77 - Nov. 26, 2016 A fourth quarter offensive drought led to a 77-67 loss for the Owls (3-3) in their Thanksgiving Tournament Championship Game against Richmond (3-3) on Saturday afternoon. Vashnie Perry more than doubled her career high in points with 15 as well as set a new personal best in 3-pointers with two. She shot 6-for-14 from the floor and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc. Sasha Cedeno nearly matched her career best that she set versus JSU as she had a team-leading 16 points, which included four threes. Another strong showing from freshman forward Katelyn O Reilly as she picked up 12 points, going 4-for-8, and doubling her previous career high with eight rebounds. Junior Raven Doyle picked up a team best nine boards. The lead only changed twice as the Owls held it for 25:58 compared to just 7:46 for their opponent. FAU shot 39.7 percent from the field compared to Richmond s 44.6 percent but outrebounded the Spiders 37-34. On the Court with Coach Jay I think we got back on our heels a little bit instead of getting out and pressuring and sending them where we wanted to send them. We just have to adapt. We have to continue to get better every day offensively, but it is something they will just have to continue to grow on and learn.

Game 7 FAU 67, Arizona 77 - Dec. 1, 2016 In their first of two games out west, the Owls (3-4) fell 77-67 to the University of Arizona (4-1) on Thursday evening despite Sasha Cedeno s career night of 24 points and 10 rebounds. Cedeno saw her first double-double of the season as she broke her career highs in both points (24) and rebounds (10), which she set last week against Jacksonville State, in just 26 minutes of play. She was 4-for-8 from downtown and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Nika Zyryanova had the second-most points for the Owls with nine and added two assists. Freshman guard Julia Jenike also made an impact with seven points and tying her personal best with six assists along with three rebounds. Helping Cedeno on the boards was freshman forward Katelyn O Reilly with eight and Melinda Myers with seven. Myers also had six points as she shot 3-for-5. FAU had 19 points off of Arizona s 17 turnovers and had 19 second-chance points while the defense held the Wildcats to just seven. Overall the Owls were outshot 45.5 percent to 35.7 percent from the floor and 50.0-31.6 percent from the 3-point line. On the Court with Coach Jay We competed on the glass and came out strong in the first quarter, but we have to continue to play with that intensity for 40 minutes. Katelyn O Reilly had a team-leading 12 points, which ties her career high, as she went 4-for-5 from the floor. The freshman also took down four rebounds. Fellow freshman Vashnie Perry had 10 points of her own as she shot 2-for-4 from the three-point line. The guard also set a career high with four rebounds. Ra Kyra Gabriel had an impressive outing on defense as she broke her career best in rebounds with 10. Alexis Shannon and Raven Doyle contributed as well with seven boards apiece. That is a career high for Shannon who also tied her personal bests in assists with three. FGCU held FAU to its lowest score of the season (50) as well as lowest score in a period (3). The Eagles shot 39.0 percent to the Owls 28.8 while going 40.0 percent from beyond the arc. FAU came out on top in both second chance points and bench points with 16 and 26, respectively. On the Court with Coach Jay Offensively there is not a lot we can take away from this game that was positive. I thought we had good stretches of defense, especially in the second quarter. I think the freshmen come in and they play hard. I would say effort and energy was the biggest difference between those two quarters (first and second). Alexis Shannon set a new career best in rebounds with eight while also earning seven points and two assists. I thought we rebounded really well. We have one more nonconference game, and it is just going to get harder. We have to clean up those things: turnovers, free throws, making layups and we work on that every day.

Junior guard Malia Kency had a team-high 12 points, including two threes, all coming in the third quarter. Sasha Cedeno and Katelyn O Reilly added nine points apiece. The Owls saw their lowest turnover count of the season with 14, but the Lady Toppers earned 18 points off takeaways to FAU s 14. The Lady Toppers were 19-of-21 from the free throw line as the Owls had 21 fouls. On the Court with Coach Jay I thought we handled their pressure well. I also am proud of our effort in the second half. Our goal was to come out and win each quarter in the second half. We won the third and we tied the fourth, so I was happy with that. We were more aggressive tonight offensively getting to the basket and looking to get into the paint. Defensively, even though the score doesn t necessarily show it, I thought we showed some good things. There is a reason they are the defending conference champs.

Game 14 FAU 65, FIU 74 - Jan. 7, 2017 FAU (4-10, 0-3 C-USA) saw its hopes for a win slip away in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter as FIU (3-11, 1-2 C-USA) went on a 10-4 run to secure a 74-65 win at home on Saturday afternoon. Malia Kency went 5-of-9 from the perimeter and shot 50 percent overall to come away with a team-high and season-best 19 points. The junior guard also saw three assists and three boards. Sasha Cedeno was also impressive on offense as she earned 15 points, including three from beyond the arc. Melinda Myers had a team-leading eight rebounds, which is a season high for the junior forward, while fellow forward Ra Kyra Gabriel added seven. FIU outshot FAU 46.7-41.7 percent as Kristian Hudson led the charge for the Panthers with a team-best 21 points and nine assists. The Owls committed 22 turnovers to FIU s 15 but matched the Panthers in rebounds with 35. On the Court with Coach Jay I thought Malia (Kency) played well. We are asking Malia to play a lot of minutes, and I thought she did some really good things. I think our defense could have done more. We have to start making a change. We have to start being better defensively. We have to buy into our system. We have to do the things we are asking them to do every day, and we have to be better.

Sasha Cedeno had a team-leading 19 points as she shot 7-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-9 from the perimeter. The junior guard also tacked on five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. This is the first game this season that the Owls did not outscore their opponent in at least one quarter. FAU also saw 22 turnovers to UTSA s 17, which allowed the Roadrunners 18 points off takeaways. UTSA had three players hit double-digit scoring with Chidomere tops (25 points) followed by Tesha Smith, who saw a double-double (20 points and 10 rebounds), and finally Kiejdrowska (14 points). Cedeno had another solid outing with 11 points, including two 3-pointers, six rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. Raven Doyle pitched in on both sides of the ball with a team-high eight boards along with four points and one assist. Katelyn O Reilly and Melinda Myers had six rebounds apiece while Jenike tied her career high with two steals. UTEP s 51 points is the lowest of any FAU opponent this season, but the Owls also saw their lowest score of the season with 50 points. FAU committed just 14 turnovers while earning 17 takeaways from UTEP, which resulted in 13 points for the Owls. On the Court with Coach Jay Defensively I think we did a phenomenal job. You hold a team to 51 points. You get more offensive rebounds. You get to the free throw line more. Stat-wise you should win the basketball game, but shooting 28 percent, you re not going to win many games. I think that they know that we can do it, but it starts with everyone believing in themselves and not getting tentative, staying in attack mode, getting to the rim and finishing at the rim.

Game 18 FAU 69, MT 87 - Jan. 21, 2017 The Owls (4-14, 0-7 C-USA) suffered an 87-69 loss to Middle Tennessee (11-7, 6-1 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon despite career performances from freshmen Alexis Shannon and Katelyn O Reilly. FAU went scoreless and had three turnovers in the remaining 3:29 as MT hit five of their last seven to earn the win. Shannon had a career-best 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting, which includes 3-of-4 from the perimeter and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. The freshman guard added three rebounds and one steal. Fellow freshman O Reilly broke her career high with 13 points on 50 percent shooting while coming away with five rebounds, one assist and one steal. For the fifth time this season, at least three Owls reached double-digits: Shannon (17), O Reilly (13) and Melinda Myers (10). FAU allowed 23 points off 21 turnovers while capturing 13 points off 15 MT takeaways. The Lady Raiders shot 49.2 percent overall as Johnson and Petty combined for 58 points in 35 and 40 minutes of play, respectively. On the Court with Coach Jay I thought our energy level was better for 40 minutes, and we competed for the most part. We have to continue to work on taking care of the basketball and finishing our defensive plays with a rebound. Alexis (Shannon) and Katelyn (O Reilly) came out and played with a confidence they haven t played with for awhile, and that was fun to see.

The Owls finished the year 14-16 with a 6-12 mark in Conference USA (C-USA) and maintained their reputation as a dangerous long-range team, setting numerous three-point records.
