SWX is slated to broadcast five home games and one away game in the 2016-17 season. The live stream will also be available at THEW.TV HOW THE EAST WAS WON - The Zags swept the Eastern half of the state in their last two games, beating Washington State 79-61 and Eastern Washington 73-54. It was their first win over the Cougars in three tries and 13th-straight win over the Eagles. The Zags 34 firstquarter points against WSU were a program high, breaking the mark of 33 set against BYU last season at home on February 27. A 10-2 Gonzaga run in the first quarter against EWU saw them lead 18-9 at the end of one quarter of play and gain a lead they would not give back. FORTIER FASTEST COACH TO 50 WINS - Lisa Fortier earned her 52nd career win against Eastern Washington, moving to 52-24. She is the fastest coach in GU women s basketball history to reach the 50-win plateau. Mike Peterson (1985-1989) reached that mark at the conclusion of his third year, Julie Holt (1989-1994) got there in her fifth season, and Kelly Graves (2000-2014) hit the mark in his fourth season. Fortier s 24 losses are the lowest total at the 50-win point, besting Peterson s total of 35. 30 of Fortier s wins have come inside the McCarthey Athletic Center, 19 on the road, and three at neutral locations. I LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS - The Bulldogs are set to play five home games in the month of December and six games in the state of Washington this month, traveling to Eastern Washington. The Zags were home three times last December, with four games in Washington, traveling to Washington State. In 2014-15, GU also played five home games in December with six in their home state, traveling to Cheney once again. PICK YOUR POISON - Sophomore Jill Barta is leading the team in points per game, blocked shots per game, field goal percentage, and free throw percentage. Her 18.1 points per game are second in the WCC and 58th nationally. She averages 1.67 blocks per game, 89th in the NCAA and third in the conference. Her field goal percentage of 60.4 percent is 16th in the country and second in the WCC, and her free throw percentage of 85.4 percent is 69th nationally and fourth in the conference. Barta has been especially good from the foul line lately, making 38 of the last 43 in the Zags last six games. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN - The Zags jumped into the Associated Press Top-25 Poll on November 21 at No. 25, but fell to receiving votes the following week. GU has been receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Top-25 Poll every week this season, and are still receiving votes in the Associated Press Poll as well this week. In the AP Poll, the Zags are receiving four votes and they garnered four votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs remain the highest ranked team from the West Coast Conference. - The Zags RPI came in at 117 in the first edition, but jumped to 79 this week after the instate wins. YOUNG GENERALS - Sophomore point guard Laura Stockton is averaging a team-leading 27.9 minutes per game, and freshman point guard Jessie Loera is playing the rest of the game at 10.8 minutes per game. - Stockton averages 4.6 assists per game, leading the team, sixth in the conference and 123rd nationally. Loera averages 1.4 per game in her 10 minutes of action. - Stockton s assist to turnover ratio of 2.17 leads the WCC and is 76th in the country. She has led the team in assists in six games, including the last two, and had five or more dimes four times. PAC-12 POWER LOSS - With the win over Washington State, and the November 18th win at No. 11/7 Stanford, the Zags moved to 2-0 against the Pac-12 Conference this season. The last time the Zags beat two schools from the Pac-12 was 2010, when they beat Washington State twice in the non-conference schedule. The fastest the Zags have ever beaten two Pac-12 opponents came a year earlier in 2009, when they beat USC and then Washington three days later on November 22. By comparison, the rest of the West Coast Conference is 0-16 against the Pac-12 this year, with Saint Mary s 62-63 loss to Utah being the closest game. WE LL GO FIRST - The Gonzaga Bulldogs started the game against Nicholls State on a 20-0 run that lasted until the four-minute mark of the first quarter when the Colonels hit a three. It was the most unanswered points to start a game in the Lisa Fortier era, breaking the previous mark of 17 set against Montana State in November of 2014. It was also the longest stretch in the last five years, eclipsing the mark of 19-straight scored against Portland State to start that game in December of 2013. Under coach Fortier, it was the fourth time the Zags have scored 10 or more unanswered points to start a game. ZAGS INK FOUR DURING EARLY SIGNING - Gonzaga women s basketball head coach Lisa Fortier announced the signing of four new Zags to National Letters of Intent for the 2017-18 season. They include Jenn Wirth (Chandler, AZ), LeeAnne Wirth (Chandler, AZ), Jill Townsend (Okanogan, WA), and Louise Forsyth (Langley, British Columbia). 3 GOZAGS.COM #UNITEDWEZAG Kiara Kudron NCAA Senior CLASS Award Nominee Dec. 12 WCC Player of the Week Emma Wolfram Allstate WBCA Good Works Team Nominee POLL TRACKER Current Peak Associated Press RV 25 USA Today RV RV NCAA RPI 79 79 College Insiders Mid-Major 2 2 NCAA ATTENDANCE PCT. HEAD COACH LISA FORTIER THIRD YEAR - CAL STATE-MONTEREY BAY, 2004 After spending much of the last decade as a member of the Gonzaga University women s basketball staff, including seven as an assistant, Lisa Fortier was named the program s head coach on April 14, 2014. In her first season as a head coach in 2014-15, Fortier oversaw one of the nation s more efficient offenses. The Bulldogs outscored opponents by 10.0 points per game. As a team, the Zags broke seven team records, including a program-best 77.4 percent from the free-throw line this season, which was also fourth-best in the country. GU made 534 free-throws and 211 three-pointers this season, both new program records. Fortier was the 2015 recipient of the WBCA Division I Rookie Coach of the Year Award. Fortier had the best first season any head coach in Gonzaga women s basketball history has ever had. Her 26 wins and 76.5 winning percentage were both top of the list among first year finishes for any GU women s basketball coach. Fortier led Gonzaga to a 26-8 finish and its seventh-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. GU made its fourth appearance in the Sweet 16, after a pair of upsets in the first and second rounds as an 11-seed. Fortier was named the West Coast Conference co-coach of the Year after guiding the Zags to their 11th straight conference regular season title. During the season, Gonzaga won 16 straight games, the fifth-longest win streak in program history. GU enjoyed its seventh-straight 25-win season. Gonzaga advanced to the postseason for the 10th consecutive year during Fortier s second season. The Zags ended their schedule in the second round of the Women s National Invitation Tournament. Jill Barta became the first freshman to be named First Team All-West Coast Conference in eight years. Fortier first came to Gonzaga in 2004, spending two years as the coordinator of basketball operations. She then spent one season as an assistant coach at the University of Northern Colorado before returning to GU in 2007. In her seven years as a Gonzaga assistant, the Bulldogs have produced an overall record of 196-43. The Zags have dominated the West Coast Conference during that span, compiling a 98-8 mark to go with seven consecutive WCC regular-season championships and five WCC Tournament titles. After a second-round appearance in the WNIT in Fortier s first season as an assistant, the Zags have qualified for the NCAA Tournament each of the last seven years, which included a stretch of three straight Sweet Sixteens from 2010-12. The highlight was an Elite Eight run in 2011, in which the Bulldogs upset three higher-seeded teams. In addition to serving as Gonzaga s recruiting coordinator, Fortier has been responsible for coordinating GU s defense. She also spent time coaching Gonzaga s guards. She has mentored two WNBA draftees in Courtney Vandersloot and Katelan Redmon as well as Haiden Palmer, a 2014 draft hopeful. She also coached Taelor Karr, the 2012-13 WCC Player of the Year. A native of Grass Valley, Calif., Fortier played collegiate basketball at Butte (Calif.) Community College before transferring to Cal State Monterey Bay. At CSUMB, she earned honorable mention All Cal-Pac Conference honors as a junior and was an NAIA Academic All-American in 2003. She also earned the 2004 CSUMB Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. GONZAGA 73, EASTERN WASHINGTON 54 GAME NINE * DECEMBER 11 * REESE COURT * CHENEY, WASH. CHENEY, Wash. The (RV) Gonzaga Bulldogs won their 13th-straight game over Eastern Washington on Sunday afternoon with a 73-54 victory in Cheney. Kiara Kudron had her first double-double of the season and fourth of her career with 13 points and 10 rebounds, leading the team in both catagories. Laura Stockton and Jill Barta each scored 12, with Stockton dishing six assists. The Zags had 16 assists compared to seven for EWU and held Delaney Hodgins, who came in averaging 21 points per game, to 13 points. The Zags bench outscored the Eagles 21-9 and 10 Zags scored in the game. They have three players who score the majority of their points, and we wanted to get off right against them, Gonzaga head coach Lisa Fortier said. We had great individual and team focus at the start of the game today. The pace was slow in the half court early and Eastern hit a three to claim a 7-5 lead, but Emma Stach responded with a triple at the other end five minutes in. That sparked a 10-2 Gonzaga run that saw them lead 18-9 at the end of one quarter of play and a lead they would not give back. Kiara Kudron finished the quarter with four points, two rebounds, a block, and a steal. The Zags forced six Eagle turnovers in the first stanza. A pass out from Jill Barta out to Jessie Loera for a deep three at 6:30 mark in the second quarter gave the Zags their biggest lead at that point, 26-12, forcing an EWU timeout. Eastern s top scorer Delaney Hodgins did not score until the six-minute mark of the second quarter. Barta got her first points for the Zags on a three-point play on the next possession. A mini run from EWU cut it to 11, 34-23, but Stach hit another three to quell the run. Out of a timeout to end the quarter, Zhané Templeton found Barta for a three and a 42-26 halftime lead. Barta started quiet but finished the half with nine points, leading the team. Stach scored nine on two threes and Laura Stockon added six points and four assists. The Zags forced 12 turnovers and shot 54 percent compared to 35 percent for EWU. The third quarter started with eight foul calls in four minutes, but Barta and Kudron both scored to keep the Zags up 48-32. The Eagles trimmed that lead to 10, 50-40 at the four-minute mark, before Stockton finished a layup around a Barta screen to keep it at 12. The 7-2 run to finish the quarter saw GU only lose one point from the lead in the quarter.
