TURKEY S LYCIAN COAST BY BIKE AND BOAT 2019 THE TURQUOISE COAST MARMARIS - FETHIYE - MARMARIS 8 days/7 nights, approx. 230km by bike Explore by boat and bike the truly spectacular Lycian coast between Bodrum and Fethiye. Your traditional Turkish gulet (wooden two or three masted sailing vessel) provides the perfect base to experience this beautiful and ancient part of the world. Rugged cliffs of pine forest plunging into turquoise sea are interspersed with tiny bays of sand and shingle accessible only by boat. With a cycle tour guide on board you get to see unique natural wonders and historical sites that many others don t. The famous rock tombs of Dalyan, carved into the cliffs by coastal Lycians. The breath-taking scenery of the Saklikent Canyon. And nights, moored in secluded bays, being rocked to sleep by the gentle murmur of the waves, after an evening of fun and superb Turkish cuisine in the cafés and bars of harbour. ITINERARY: Day 1: (Saturday) Embarkation in Marmaris from 2 pm Individual arrival to Marmaris. Dalaman or Bodrum Airport is approx. 1.5 hours or 2 hours by road (transfers can booked for additional cost). Embarkation starts at 2pm. This afternoon stroll the winding streets of the oriental old town, before meeting on board for dinner. Day 2: (Sunday) Marmaris Sarsala A 2 hour cruise takes us to a picturesque swimming bay. Then it s onshore with our bikes and our first cycle over a 250m high pass to the Dalaman plains with their cotton fields and orchards before taking a well-earned break in a tea house. Back on our bikes we cycle across a small pass before reaching the beautiful bay of Sarsala. Cycling: Approximately 35 km, elevation 970m
Day 3: (Monday) Sarsala Bay Fethiye Enjoy this morning s sail past numerous, picturesque little islands before reaching Gemiler Bay also known as the island of St. Nicolas where a church was built for him in the 5 th Century. Back on the mainland our bike ride takes us through a pine forest to the 1922 abandoned Greek city of Kayaköy, once home to 6,500 inhabitants. We continue to the lagoon of Oludeniz, a famous golden sand beach similar to the Golden Horn of Brac in Croatia. Join the guide for an appealing but challenging ride back to the ship at Fethiye where the boat will be waiting. Cycling: Approximately 35 km Day 4: (Tuesday) Fethiye Saklikent Canyon Gocek A short morning transfer (about 30 min) takes us to the starting point of today s bike ride to Cavdir. From here we continue by bike to the Saklikent (Hidden City) Canyon where a riverside restaurant invites us to refuel and relax before we explore the Canyon on foot. We continue cycling to the ancient town of Tlos which was one of the largest towns in Lycia. After a visit there a transfer takes us to Fethiye from where our ship brings us to Gocek to spend the night. Cycling: Approximately 30 km, Day 5: (Wednesday) Gocek - Dalyan From Gocek bike over a 350m high pass, enjoying panoramic views. Afterwards cross a pine forest then cycle a minor road down to the Dalaman plain, through fertile fields and lush vegetation to Dalyan. From here we take a small boat on a 30 minute ride past the impressive Lycian rock-cut tombs overlooking the Dalyan delta to our awaiting gulet. Cycling: Approximately 40 km
Day 6: (Thursday) Kaunos Ekincik After breakfast we go by small boat to the ancient city of Kaunos. Once on land only the ruins remain silent witness to the former wealth of the city - it s a fascinating site to visit. We then cycle the shores of Lake Köycegiz, and the opportunity to take a healing mud bath close to Sultaniye. Back on our bikes we pedal a 350m climb to arrive at the little village of Ekinicik to spend the night. Cycling: Approximately 32 km Day 7: (Friday) Ekincik - Marmaris Enjoy this morning relaxing on the boat as we sail to a small bay on the tip of the Bozburun Peninsula. From there a remote mountain road takes us 300m up to a mountain village with a 1,500 year old plane tree and a lively bazaar that s well worth a visit. A brief walk around the plane tree promises a lucky and long life. After a spectacular descent down to Icmeler s coastal road our tour finally leads to Marmaris, where the boat awaits. The last evening on board is a traditional communal dinner and a last get together with crew and tour guides. Cycling: Approximately 55 km Day 8: (Saturday) Tour ends in Marmaris Disembark after breakfast. For additional cost there is a collective transfer to Dalaman or Bodrum Airport or you can extend your stay in Turkey. ITINERARY CHANGES We reserve the right to make alterations to the itinerary, depending on wind and weather conditions or organisational requirements. GRADE Challenging: The cycle tours average 40 km a day and will take you through partly hilly and mountainous terrain - most of the roads are asphalted. There will be extended climbs where walking your bike is of course quite acceptable. You can also stay onboard at any time to swim, relax or simply enjoy the sailing and the views. Helmets are mandatory on all bike tours. We recommend you bring your own (well fitted) helmet. There are a limited number of bike helmets on board (you must request one at the time of booking). Small group: Minimum 14 passengers required to guarantee the departure of this tour. Maximum - 22 BAHRIYELI The Bahriyelis are 3 masted motor sailors built as traditional Turkish gulets. They are known for top-class comfort and the best facilities and are 33 37m long. The boats offer 8 to 10 spacious cabins with their own heating/air-conditioning unit and a generously sized ensuite. The huge sun deck is equipped with comfortable mats for you to sunbathe or spend the nights outside. The crew is a well-trained team and will ensure that you enjoy a pampered experience on board.
MEALS Half-board: The onboard chef will prepare breakfast and one hot meal daily. Catering begins with dinner on the first night and ends with breakfast on day of disembarkation. You will have plenty of opportunities to experience Turkish cuisine in the local cafes. INTERNET Bahriyeli does not offer a WiFi connection. If you need to connect to the internet during your tour we recommend you go to a café or bar somewhere on shore.
