Florial s longball was the 19-year-old Dominican s team-leading ninth of the season, and put the RiverDogs (36-36, 2-0) ahead after the Drive s shortstop Santiago Espinal roped a two-run shot to left-center to tie the ballgame in the seventh. The game stayed scoreless heading into the bottom of the sixth inning until Greenville (41-30, 0-2) opened the scoring. Reliever Matt Frawley gave up two infield singles and another runner reached on an error to load up the bases before the former Purdue man walked third baseman Mitchell Gunsolus on four pitches to bring in the first run of the game, and make it 1-0 Drive. The RiverDogs plated three in the seventh to respond quickly and take a 3-1 advantage. With two outs, catcher Keith Skinner collected his first Class A hit with a two-run single to right field to give Charleston the lead. Hoy Jun Park roped a triple into the right-center field gap to score Skinner to cap the three-run inning. Charleston starter Nick Nelson tossed 72 pitches to get through four innings and did not factor into the decision. The Florida native fanned four and walked one in his first start following the All-Star break.the RiverDogs used four different relievers to get through the rest of the game. Christian Morris (3-1) vultured the win after giving up the game-tying two-run homer in the seventh. David Sosebee worked a scoreless eighth and ninth to pick up his second save of the year. Charleston has now also won four straight against the Drive, the reigning first half champions, outscoring Greenville by a combined 28-4 over their last four wins against the Red Sox affiliate. Southpaw Atlantic League: The RiverDogs left-handed dominant lineup has faced an unusual dearth of left-handed starting pitching this year. Charleston will face southpaw Robby Sexton for Greenville tonight, marking the 32nd time over the first 73 games they have faced a lefty starter (44 percent). Lefties makeup approximately 10 percent of the general population, but at its peak, over 30 percent of all starting pitchers in MLB were left-handed, a number that has declined each year since 2012, down to about 25% last season (Vocativ). Charleston s mostly left-handed lineup is 15-16 in games against southpaw starters this year. You mess with the Bull(pen), You Get the Horns: The RiverDogs bullpen has been outright dominant throughout the first 72 games. In 266.1 innings, they have allowed only 62 runs with a 1.82 ERA and struck out 300 batters. Charleston has only lost three times when holding a lead after five innings or later. Over the last 21 games, the RiverDogs bullpen has allowed just 6 ER (12 total) in 63.1 innings tossed (0.85 ERA). Best of the Month: RiverDogs pitching has been dominant since the turn of the calendar page, turning in a 1.87 staff ERA in the month of June, the lowest among all South Atlantic League teams. Charleston pitching has allowed one or fewer runs in ten of their 20 games in the month so far, and logging three shutout wins over that span. The More You Flo: RiverDogs outfielder Estevan Florial has been on a tear as of late, collecting at least a hit in 15 of his last 17 games, a span in which his has gone 26-for-61 (.426) with four home runs, 11 RBI, 8 BB, and 5 stolen bases. The Dominican Republic native ranks third in the SAL circuit in runs scored (47), 3rd in total bases (125), and 7th in batting (.310). There have been 27 double-digit HR-SB seasons in Charleston s franchise history dating back to 1980, with the last coming in 2011 when Ramon Flores had 11 each in 125 games as a RiverDog. Only 13 Charleston players in the South Atlantic League s history have stolen at least 20 bases while compiling double-digit home run totals with the last being accomplished by Seth Fortenberry in 2007 (18 HR, 25 SB). Pinstriped Prospects: Once again, the RiverDogs tap into one of the premier farm systems in baseball with the New York Yankees. Recently rated the second-best farm system by the MLB Pipeline and the third best by Baseball America, the Bronx Bombers boast four of MLB.com s Preseason Top-100 prospects including RiverDogs OF Blake Rutherford (#37). Charleston s roster features five of the Yankees Top-30 prospects according to MLB.com s 2017 list: Rutherford (#3), OF Estevan Florial (#15), SS/2B Hoy Jun Park (#23), C Donny Sands (#24), and RHP Freicer Perez (#26).
