After posting a 6-8 Patriot League record during his initial 2003-04 season with the program, Marryott guided a lineup last year consisting of just one returning starter and only three players who had scored more than 100-career points to an identical 6-8 record and to the program s first victory in the Patriot League Tournament in six years. While he has been working with the women s program for only a brief period of time, Marryott is no stranger to Naval Academy basketball, having served as an assistant coach with the men s program since the fall of 1998. Navy made three Patriot League championship game appearances and reached the 1998 NCAA Touament during his five years with the program. The Midshipmen also won a pair of league regular-season titles and amassed an 80-65 overall record during his stint with the team. Prior to his beginning his tenure at the Naval Academy, Marryott served as both head coach and athletic director for 10 seasons at the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I. His basketball teams recorded a 124-75 (.623) record in that decade, during which time he coached future Naval Academy standouts Hassan Booker, Skip Victor, Jehiel Lewis, Victor Mickjel and Matt Sladky. A 1985 graduate of Castleton (Vt.) State, Marryott helped lead the Spartans to the NAIA Tournament during his final season and was inducted into the school s athletic hall of fame in 2001. He began his coaching career by serving as a graduate assistant at Vermont during the 1985-86 season. After then spending one season as an assistant coach at Genesse Community College (Batavia, N.Y.), he joined the staff at Providence for the 1987-88 season. It was in the fall of 1988 that he moved on to NAPS. Background on Marryott Hometown Birthdate June 27, 1963 Education B.S., Castleton (Vt.) After rallying from a late nine-point deficit to post an overtime victory at Lehigh Tuesday night, the Navy women s basketball team will return to the Lehigh Valley Saturday for a 4 p.m. game at Lafayette. The broadcast of the game can be heard live over the internet at www.wnav.com(,) as well as on a tape delayed basis following the Washington Redskins game locally on WNAV- AM 1430. The Mids are 1-1 in the Patriot League this year, while the Leopards are 0-2. A Look Back Lehigh held a two-point lead over Navy at halftime Tuesday night and slowly opened up a 62-53 advantage with 7:12 remaining in regulation. The Mids responded by quickly going on a 14-4 run and taking a 67-66 lead with 3:22 left on the clock. Navy would hold a lead of either one or two points until pushing its advantage to three points on a pair of Lauren Skrel free throws with 9.4 seconds to play. Lehigh rushed the ball down the court and Sara Ellis was fouled while attempting a three-point field goal with 0.2 seconds left on the clock. She calmly sank all three attempts from the foul line to send the game into overtime. Lehigh would take a 78-75 lead midway through the extra session, but Navy scored 10 of the next 12 points to take an 85-80 lead with 52 seconds left to play. From there, the Mids put the game away from the foul line. Free throw shooting by both teams was superb, especially down the stretch. Navy was 2-of-3 from the foul line in the first half, but converted 8-of-9 free throws in the second half and all 11 attempts in overtime to finish 21-of-23 in the game. Leading the way for the Mids was Skrel, who made 12-of-13 free throw attempts, including all eight in the extra session. Ashley Pelzek connected on five threepointers and tallied a Navy-best 23 points in the game, with Skrel adding 17 points and eight assists. Lafayette Preview After starting the season with a 3-0 record, the Leopards have since dropped 10 of their last 11 games and enter Saturday s contest on a five-game losing skid and with a 4-10 record on the season. Three of their four wins on the year have come at home. Lafayette has opened the league season with losses at Holy Cross (78-39) and at home to Colgate (69-56). Vanessa Van De Venter leads Lafayette in scoring at 10.6 points a game, with Kara Stetler ranking second with 9.9 points a game. In addition to leading the team in scoring, the duo is also shooting the ball very well this year (Stetler at 42.7% from the field and 44.9% from behind the three-point line; Van De Venter is shooting 42.0% from the field). Brittany Purr leads the Leopards in rebounding at 6.9 rebounds a game, one more carom a contest than Van De Venter is averaging. Lafayette as a team is averaging 55.9 points a game and allowing 63.3 points a game. Navy vs. Lafayette Navy and Lafayette have met every year since the 1979-80 season, making this the longest continuous series in Navy history. The Mids hold a 28-15 lead in the series, including a 19-9 lead in Patriot League regular season games. The two teams have split the previous 20 games played in Easton. Navy saw its seven-game winning streak over Lafayette come to a close the last time the two teams met, a 68-58 victory by the Leopards last Feb. 23 in Easton. Common Foes Navy and Lafayette faced four common opponents during their respective non-conference seasons, with the Mids recording a 3-1 mark against the teams and the Leopards posting a 2-2 record. Navy and Pennsylvania The Mids have posted an all-time record of 121-71 in games played against teams from Pennsylvania, as well as a 55-51 record in games played in the Keystone State. Extra Sessions Two of Navy s last three games have gone into overtime. This marks the third time Navy has played multiple overtime games during a three-game span two out of three games during the 1984-85 season; three games in a row during the 2002-03 season. Navy s Jan. 4 double overtime game at Troy was the first Navy contest to reach overtime since March 7, 2003, when Navy lost to Bucknell, as well as the first multi-overtime game since March 1 of that same year when Navy posted an 86-85 triple overtime victory over Army. The Mids have posted an all-time record of 14-11 in overtime games, including a 5-5 mark in Patriot League regular season games. Busy Stretch Finished The Jan. 4 Troy game concluded a very busy stretch of games for the Mids, one which saw Navy play four games in eight days. Navy posted a 2-2 record over those four games. Following Success and Failure Navy has posted a 2-5 record in games following a win and a 5-2 record in games following a loss. Better vs. Non-League Schools Navy s 7-6 record against non-league opponents this year marked the first time Navy posted a winning record against non-conference foes in three years. The Mids were 4-9 against non-league opponents last year and posted a 7-8 mark two years ago. Better on the Road, Too Navy has posted a 4-2 record in road games this year (4-3 in all games played away from Alumni Hall), to already double the number of road victories by the Mids for all of last year. Preparing to Serve The senior class at the Naval Academy recently made their service selections for their upcoming military careers and each of the three seniors on the women s basketball team received naval aviation. Meredith Addington, Ashley Pelzek and Lauren Skrel will be commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy in May and will train to become pilots. What the trio will fly will be determined after several stages of flight school. U.S. Naval Academy Tops in APR The U.S. Naval Academy s athletic program was ranked as the best in the nation among the 117 schools with Division I-A football programs in the NCAA s Academic Performance Rate. Navy also ranked seventh out of 328 Division I institutions. The APR is the fulcrum upon which the entire academic-reform structure rests. Developed as a more real-time assessment of team s academic performance than the six-year graduation rate calculation provides, the APR awards two points each term to student-athletes who meet academic-eligibility standards and who remain with the institution. A team s APR is the total points earned by the team at a given time, divided by the total points possible. The Naval Academy had 10 sports ranked first with an APR of 1,000, meaning every student-athlete on their respective roster remained at the Naval Academy and was also eligible to compete or graduate. Each of Navy s 23 varsity sports sponsored by the NCAA ranked above the national Division I average of 950 and Division I-A average of 947. The women s basketball team at Navy totaled a mark of 972. The Mids are a combined 9-4 since the start of the 2004-05 season when scoring at least 70 points in a game, as well as 17-5 when scoring at least 70 points during Tom Marryott s three seasons as head coach. Navy is averaging 19.9 turnovers a game this year and has committed at least 20 turnovers in eight games on the year. Making the issue worse is that the Mids have turned the ball over more times than their opponents in all but one of their 15 games this season. Navy is forcing 15.1 turnovers a game, giving the Mids a league-low -4.9 turnover margin. In Navy s two overtime games in this span, the Mids committed only 15 turnovers in a double overtime loss at Troy and 12 turnovers in an overtime win at Lehigh. Close Games Navy is 6-1 in games decided by seven points or less, including 3-1 in games decided by four points or less. Shooter! Dave Smalley Court As part of the men s and women s doubleheader against Bucknell on Jan. 7, the Naval Academy dedicated the floor in Alumni Hall as Dave Smalley Court in honor of his more than 50-year association with Navy athletics as a midshipman, coach, instructor and administrator. A 1957 graduate of the Academy, Smalley earned six letters as a standout on the basketball and baseball teams. One of only four players to serve as team captain in two seasons, Smalley totaled 856 points during his three-year varsity basketball career.
