# tarragona2018 / www.tarragona2018.cat SUCCESS OF THE HEADS OF MISSION SEMINAR FOR TARRAGONA 2018 NUMBER 11 NOVEMBER 2017 In the lead-up, technical seminars were held attended by technical delegates and competition managers for Tarragona 2018 The Seminar for the Heads of Mission of the Mediterranean Games took place on 10 and 11 October in Tarragona and according to the participants opinions the event was a great success in terms of both the organization and information on the Games. Over the two full-day sessions, the Heads of Mission of the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and members of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) were able to get first-hand knowledge of the organizational details of Tarragona 2018 and the different competition venues for the Games. of the Department of International Relations and Protocol for Tarragona 2018, the aim of the seminar s two on-site sessions was to provide the Heads of Mission of each Olympic Committee with useful information on all the operational and organizational aspects of the Games so they can make the appropriate preparations for their delegations to take part in 2018. The role of opening the Heads of Mission Seminar fell to the president of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games, Amar Addadi, and the president of the Spanish Olympic Committee, Alejandro Blanco. Visit to the Games venues In addition, the Tarragona 2018 organizers accompanied the international representatives to several of the sports facilities that will be competition venues during the Games. The first day of visits focused on venues within the city of Tarragona: the Costa Daurada Golf Club, Tarragona Tennis Club, the Mediterranean Ring, the Tarraco Arena Plaza, the Nou Estadi stadium and the Camp de Mart Auditorium, as well as the site for beach volleyball at Arrabassada and the water-skiing venue at the Port Tarraco Marina. On the second day the delegation visited venues close to Tarragona: the Olympic Pavilion and the Football Stadium in Reus, and the Vila-seca and Cambrils sports centres. They were also able to see the hotels where the athletes will be accommodated and the Convention Centre that will be used as a Residents Service Centre. All this will form the Mediterranean Village at Port Aventura. Technical meetings On the afternoon of 9 October, a joint meeting was also held for the technical delegates of the International Federations and the Games competition managers with the Technical Committee of the ICMG and the Sports Department of the Organizing Committee. This meant they could all attend both the sessions and visits during the Seminar. This was a pioneering meeting in the history of the Games, a joint initiative of both the ICMG and Tarragona 2018, with the goal of creating a preparatory phase that would include everyone involved in putting on the Games: ICMG, Organizing Committee, National Olympic Committees and Sports Federations.
THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE ICMG APPROVES THE OLYMPIC COMMITTEE OF PORTUGAL AS A FULL MEMBER The international body also designated the Greek city of Patras to host the 2019 Mediterranean Beach Games The International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) held its General Assembly on 13 October in Tarragona. Various ICMG internal matters were dealt with, including electing the members of the new Executive Committee for the next four years. The Assembly re-elected Amar Addadi as president of the ICMG, and chose Víctor Sánchez, Executive Director of Tarragona 2018, as First Vice-President. The General Assembly also welcomed the Olympic Committee of Portugal to the ICMG as a full member. This means that they will enjoy all the same conditions as the other Olympic Committees participating in the 2018 Mediterranean Games. It should be remembered that up until now Portugal s participation has been based on being a guest Olympic Committee. A HUNDRED TARRAGONA 2018 VOLUNTEERS TAKE PART IN THE HEADS OF MISSION SEMINAR AND THE ICMG GENERAL ASSEMBLY Participants included 30 NOC Assistants The Heads of Mission Seminar for Tarragona 2018 and the ICMG General Assembly brought together numerous representatives in Tarragona from the 26 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) that will be taking part in the Mediterranean Games next year. The Tarragona 2018 volunteers accompanied these events every step of the way. To put all this together, up to a hundred volunteers were mobilized during the days leading up to the meeting and during the working sessions. Prior to these working sessions, the Organizing Committee assigned the first 30 NOC Assistants to be directly involved with their respective delegations and serve as a link with the organization. The Heads of Mission Seminar was the first opportunity for the NOCs to make contact with some of their NOC Assistants. TARRAGONA 2018 TAKES PART IN THE ICMG COOPERATION PROGRAMME Welcoming two interns onto this programme, from Egypt and Lebanon On the occasion of the Tarragona 2018 Heads of Mission Seminar and the General Assembly of the ICMG held in Tarragona in mid-october, and with the aim of gaining in-depth knowledge about its preparations and learning about the complexity and different needs of an event of this nature, two assistants designated by the Olympic Committees of Egypt and Lebanon were hosted in Tarragona for two weeks by the Organizing Committee, through grants awarded by the ICMG Committee for Cooperation and Development. This programme turned out to be very positive for the training of the two assistants, as both of them confirmed, and what they have learned can be fed back to their own NOCs. THE CITY COUNCIL AWARDS THE CONTRACT FOR THE 50-METRE SWIMMING POOL AND THE DISMANTLING OF THE A-7 HIGHWAY Transmaber and Acsa, Obras e Infraestructuras will undertake these two projects for the Tarragona 2018 Mediterranean Games The Tarragona City Council has awarded the contract for building the 50-metre swimming pool and the one for dismantling the A-7 highway, two major projects for the Tarragona 2018 Mediterranean Games It should be remembered that the 50-metre pool, located in the Mediterranean Ring, will be the future hub of the Aquatic Centre that will host the swimming and water polo competitions. Of the eight companies that submitted a tender, the bid with the highest score was that of Acsa, Obras e Infraestructuras SA for a price of 1,689,331 plus VAT. Dismantling of the A-7 highway The contract was also granted for the town planning project aimed at improving pedestrian
mobility on the old section of the A-7 highway. This work, therefore, will facilitate mobility in the area around the Nou Estadi stadium, the setting for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Mediterranean Games. Of the 11 companies that submitted a tender, the contract was awarded to Transmaber SL, with a price of 270,384.53 plus VAT. SPORT AND SOLIDARITY AT THE WOMEN RACE EL CORTE INGLÉS The fourth edition of the Women Race El Corte Inglés was once again a great success, with over 1,000 participants. The 5-kilometre course wound through the streets of Tarragona to raise funds for the fight against cancer. Tarragona 2018 and its volunteers collaborated in this charity event. THE SANTA TERESA FAIR IN EL VENDRELL PROMOTES THE TARRAGONA 2018 MEDITERRANEAN GAMES Once again, the Santa Teresa Fair in the host municipality of El Vendrell promoted the Tarragona 2018 Games. This major regional event attracted 40,000 visitors during its three day duration.
THE REGION S CHILDREN GET TO MEET TARRACVS The mascot of the 18th Mediterranean Games participated in various activities and sports competitions held throughout the region. One highlight was the annual El Vendrell Half Marathon, held this year for the thirty-first time, proving once again to be one of the province s most hotly-anticipated races. Many people also took part in the Santa Úrsula Race in Valls, the Day of the Bicycle in Vila-seca and the Calafell Race. At these events, Tarracvs got involved with the participants and the activities and spent lots of time with the little ones. Finally, the Campclar Children s Party attracted numerous children who enjoyed the company of the Games mascot. Taking place close to the Mediterranean Ring, the epicentre of Tarragona 2018, this event was a huge fiesta dedicated to sport, solidarity and fun.
