Tough Shooting Night In the loss at Iowa on Jan. 28, the Boilermakers shot a season low.233 percent (14-of-60) from the field and surrendered an opponent season-best 54 rebounds. It was equal opportunity misfiring for Purdue, as Alex Guyton (3-of-6) and Liza Clemons (1-of-1) were the only Boilermakers to shoot.500 or better for the game. Increased Production KK Houser contributes 13.0 points per game in conference game - 5.5 higher than her non-conference average (7.5). She also is shooting.404 from the field, including.405 from three-point range in Big Ten play after averaging.304 FG/.219 3FG in the non-conference. Taking Care Of The Rock The Boilermakers are doing a better job of taking care of the basketball in conference games. They are averaging 15.3 turnovers per game in league play after averaging 19.7 miscues against non-conference opponents. Scoring Leader Not only has senior Brittany Rayburn led Purdue in scoring the last two seasons with averages of 14.6 ppg (sophomore) and 14.4 ppg (junior), but with 1,617 points she also is second among active Big Ten players for career points, trailing only Ohio State s Samantha Prahalis. Rayburn leads the Boilermakers in scoring so far this season with an average of 14.1 ppg which is 14th in the conference. Rayburn has stepped up her rebounding in her senior campaign and is second on the team with a career-best 4.2 rpg average. The Attica, Ind., native has hit two or more threes in eight games this season, with a career-high, NCAA record-tying 12 three-pointers at Minnesota. Rayburn s career-high 38 points in that game are the most by a Big Ten player this season. Moses And Houser Courtney Moses and KK Houser each scored career highs at Northwestern. Moses finished with a game-high 29 points, hitting 3-of-3 from three in the first half and a career-high 14-of-14 from the free throw line. Houser recorded 21 points, four rebounds, five assists and five steals. It was Purdue s first game this season with two 20+ point scorers. The duo s accomplishments were needed as leading scorer Brittany Rayburn was 0-of-12 from the field and finished with four points. National Rankings Associated Press (Jan. 30) 1. Baylor 2. Houser Sets The Tone KK Houser has scored in double-figures in eight conference games this season, including her the first 20+ point game of her career, with 21 at Northwestern. At Minnesota, Houser recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 assists. Stingy Defense By holding opponents to 36.6 percent from the field last season, the Boilermakers tied the second-lowest opponent season field goal percentage in school history. This season, Purdue has limited opponents to.341. The Boilermakers have held seven opponents below.299 shooting from the field this season, including limiting Michigan State to its season low at.281 (16-of-57). Purdue has held opponents to an average of 55.6 points per game, with 15 opponents scoring 55 points or less, including a season-low 36 points by IPFW on Dec. 22. The most points Purdue has given up in a game was 93 to No. 16 Nebraska in triple overtime. Not Just A Rebounder Anymore Sam Ostarello led the Boilermakers in rebounding as a freshman (5.0 rpg). As a junior, she averages a team-leading 7.9 rebounds per game. She is fourth in the conference in rebounding for all games. The Pierre, S.D., native has recorded double-digit rebounds in seven games this season. She had a season-high 13 rebounds vs. Wisconsin. Ostarello has recorded two double-doubles this season - against Oakland (16 pts./10 reb.) and versus Wisconsin (12 pts./13 reb.) - and three in her career. Ostarello is Purdue s fourth leading scorer with an 7.7 ppg average and has 32 blocks this season, second on the team and fifth in the Big Ten for all games. Another Streak Brittany Rayburn had a season-best 25-consecutive free throws, that started and ended with the two Iowa games. She missed her final free throw at Iowa on Jan. 28. Rayburn set a school record as a sophomore with 38-consecutive made free throws. Moses Another Scoring Option Sophomore guard Courtney Moses has led Purdue in scoring six times this season. Moses is Purdue s second leading scorer, averaging 10.1 points per game. She has made two game winning shots this year, a buzzerbeating three-pointer at Illinois and a layup with 11 seconds remaining at Bowling Green for the win. Moses set Purdue s freshman record for three-pointers a year ago with 54, connecting on 40.9 percent of her attempts from long range and 42.3 percent overall from the field. The Sweetser, Ind., native has gotten off to a slower start this season but made a season-high 4-of-7 three-pointers versus Oakland. Moses has started every game she has played this year, in fact, the only game in her career she has played but did not start was her very first one as a freshman. This season, Moses missed the Kansas State game due to concussion symptoms. Post Play Chelsea Jones and Alex Guyton led the Boilermakers in scoring with 12 points each against Michigan State. It was a season high for Jones who also tied her season best with four blocks. She was 5-of-5 from the floor, pulled down six rebounds (four offensive), had two assists and two steals. Sam Ostarello contributed seven points and seven rebounds in the win. Block Party Purdue is 16th nationally (as of Feb. 3) in blocked shots and is averaging a conference-best 5.6 blocks per game. Purdue tied a school single-game record with 13 blocks against Chicago State. Chelsea Jones leads Purdue with 36 blocks (4th in Big Ten), while Sam Ostarello has 32 blocks (5th in Big Ten) and Alex Guyton has recorded 22 blocked shots (14th). Stealing It The Boilermakers are first in the Big Ten in steals (10.6). Purdue recorded a season-high 17 steals at Indiana on Jan. 19. The Boilermakers force a league-best 21.1 turnovers per game and in conference have a +5.3 turnover margin, second best behind Michigan (+5.8). Bench Play A Key Part of Purdue s success this season is due to a deep bench. Nine players average 14 minutes or more and the Boilermakers bench has outscored the opponent s reserves 16 times this year. Purdue is 15-2 when scoring equal or more bench points. More On Houser Redshirt sophomore guard KK Houser is leading the team in assists (85) and steals (64). At Illinois and Indiana, she hit career-highs with three three-pointers. The trouble spot for the redshirt sophomore has been turnovers; she is averaging 4.2 miscues a game. Houser sat out last season with an ACL tear that occurred four minutes into the first contest of the year. Houser has had five or more steals six times this year, including tying her career high of six against Nebraska. Getting Off To A Good Start KK Houser sets the tone defensively with her relentless on-ball pressure. She has also gotten Purdue off to a good start on offense at times this season too. The sophomore point guard has made Purdue s first basket on five occasions and has hit her first three-point attempt in 11 games. Player Of The Week Brittany Rayburn was named Big Ten Player of the Week, USWBA and NetScouts Basketball National Player of the Week on Jan. 17. In two wins, Rayburn averaged 26.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks while shooting nearly 62 percent from three-point range. On Jan. 12 at Minnesota, Rayburn tied a 17-year-old NCAA women s basketball record by hitting 12 three-pointers, making 12-of-16 (.750) from long range. Rayburn finished with 38 points, the third highest single-game total in school history. She followed up her record setting performance by leading Purdue in scoring with 14 points, including the gamewinning free throws with 17.5 seconds left against Iowa. On the ensuing Hawkeye possession, Rayburn blocked a potential game-winning shot with one second on the clock to secure the victory. Another Milestone With a team-high 17 points at Illinois, Brittany Rayburn moved past the 1,500 point plateau. The Attica, Ind., native was already one of the 26 members of Purdue s 1,000 point club and now is even more elite company as just one of 10 players all time at Purdue to score at least 1,600 points. Rayburn is currently ninth and at her current scoring pace, Rayburn could finish as high as sixth place on Purdue s all-time scoring list. Rayburn has totaled over 1,600 points, 300 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals at Purdue. Howard Provides Depth Redshirt senior guard/forward Antionette Howard had a breakout game at Indiana, scoring a season-high 20 Jones A Defensive Force points, while recording a team-high eight rebounds Six-foot-four center Chelsea Jones continues to exert her (six offensive) and a career-high four steals. Howard has will in the post. On Jan. 2, she helped limit preseason Allachieved double-figure scoring six times this season, four Big Ten selection Karisma Penn to nine points on 4-of-12 of those in Big Ten games. shooting and seven turnovers. One For The Record Books Brittany Rayburn tied the NCAA Division I women s basketball record for three-point field goals with 12 at Minnesota. She equaled the mark set by Louisiana State s Cornelia Gayden in 1995. The 12 three-pointers are a Big Ten record, breaking the mark of 10 set by Indiana s Amy Cherubini (2/21/92) and Michigan State s Maxann Reese (1/29/99). It s also a Purdue record, eclipsing the previous best of seven threes achieved by Stephanie White (at Florida on Dec. 21, 1998) and Jodi Howell (twice - at Michigan State on Jan. 11. 2007 and at Michigan on Feb. 28, 2010). Rayburn s 38 points is third at Purdue for points in a game behind Katie Gearlds 41 at Wisconsin on Feb. 18, 2007, and Shereka Wright s 40 at Michigan on Feb. 17, 2002. By the way, Rayburn also grabbed six rebounds and took two charges against the Gophers. RPI Purdue is No. 15 in the most recent NCAA RPI index. The Boilermakers No. 17 according to RealTimeRPI.com and are No. 24 in the Jeff Sagarin/CBN ratings on RPIratings.com with a schedule ranked the 28th toughest in the nation. Breaking It Down Purdue has held opponents to an average of 51.2 points per game in its wins compared to allowing 71.4 points per game in its losses, a difference of nearly 20 points per contest. In the Boilermakers wins they have held opponents to 32.0 percent shooting, while allowing 41.0 percent from the field in the losses. Rebounding Woes Purdue has been outrebounded 11 times this season, and is 6-5 when losing the battle of the boards. The Boilermakers are 12-0 when equaling or outrebounding their opponent. In its losses, Purdue has been outrebounded 250-182 (-13.6 rpg). All Good Things Must End Rayburn s team-best streak of 44 consecutive starts ended at Auburn. The 6-foot senior was diagnosed with pneumonia after the Central Michigan game and was unable to practice until Dec. 17, prompting head coach Sharon Versyp to move Rayburn out of the starting lineup. Rayburn came off the bench against the Tigers to record 15 points, three assists and three steals in 23 minutes. She hit the only three-pointer for Purdue in the contest. Guyton Finds A Rhythm Apparently, Alex Guyton likes playing against Auburn. Last season she recorded a then career-high 14 points and nine rebounds against the Tigers. This season, she again set a career high with a game-high 19 points. The 6-foot-3 forward made 7-of-10 shots and 5-of-7 free throws while recording three steals in a season-high 25 minutes. A Tough Stretch Purdue s game on Dec. 10 vs. No. 3 Notre Dame was the third-consecutive against a top-10 opponent. The Boilermakers went 1-2 in that stretch, knocking off No. 4 Texas A&M 60-51 on Dec. 4 in Mackey Arena. It was just the fourth time in school history that the Boilermakers have played three-straight games against top-10 opponents, the third time it has happened in the regular season. Last season, the Boilermakers had three-consecutive games against top-25 opponents (No. 22 Maryland, No. 16 Notre Dame and No. 7 Texas A&M) and had to play all three without Drey Mingo who had contracted bacterial meningitis on Nov. 22. Boiler Crunch Purdue s cereal drive to benefit the Food Finders Backpack program resulted in 1,348 boxes of breakfast cereal collected and about $300 dollars donated. It Doesn t Happen Often Purdue s 46-42 overtime victory over Kansas State marked just the second time in school history that the Boilermakers had scored 49 points or less and won. The last time it had happened was vs. Kentucky (48-40) on Dec. 18, 1999. Purdue s overall record when scoring 49 or less is 2-47. Mingo Out With ACL Injury Redshirt senior forward Drey Mingo tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee on Oct. 29 in a scrimmage at Indiana State. She had surgery to repair the ligament on Nov. 28 and is expected to miss the season. Head Coach Sharon Versyp Former Purdue point guard, Sharon Versyp is in her sixth season as head coach of the Boilermakers. Versyp has led the Boilermakers to two Big Ten Tournament championships (2007 and 2008) and to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight twice (2007 and 2009). Versyp was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in April of 2010 and named a Legend of Mackey Arena on Jan. 9, 2011. Legends of Mackey MaChelle Joseph and Brian Cardinal were announced this week as Legends of Mackey. Sharon Versyp, Stephanie White and Joy Holmes were the first three women of the 24 Legends of Mackey Arena to be announced. Twelve each of the most-popular Boilermaker men s and women s players, who have competed in the arena since its dedication in 1967, are being recognized as the Legends of Mackey. The 24 were chosen through a twomonth on-line voting process by fans. Home Sweet Home Purdue is 10-2 in Mackey Arena this season. Last year s 14 home wins was the most since Purdue went 16-0 in 2002-03. Purdue has won at least 12 home games each of the last six seasons. Among Nation s Best In Attendance Purdue fans loyal support makes Mackey Arena a tough place to play and has put the Boilermakers in the top 10 in national attendance for 16-straight seasons. Purdue finished eighth in attendance last year after threeconsecutive years at No. 5. The Boilermakers are currently sixth nationally behind Connecticut in home attendance. Miss Basketball The Boilermakers have five former Miss Basketball honorees on their bench, including head coach Sharon Versyp who was the first Indiana Miss Basketball to play at Purdue. Brittany Rayburn is the seventh and Courtney Moses the eighth Indiana Miss Basketball to don the Old Gold and Black. KK Houser was Nebraska s Miss Basketball as a senior and Sam Ostarello earned the Miss Basketball title for South Dakota in her senior season. Preseason Prognostication The Boilermakers were picked No. 2 behind Penn State by both the Big Ten coaches and the media panel in the conference preseason poll. Program Milestone Purdue recorded its 700th victory in women s basketball against UT Martin on Nov. 20. Sharon Versyp was the head coach for another of Purdue s milestones, the 600th win which came at Iowa (68-58) on Jan. 3, 2007. Redmon To Sit Out Sophomore Camille Redmon will sit out this season after transferring from Grayson County College. An NCAA qualifier out of high school, Redmon signed with Kansas State but only attended summer school there before transferring to Grayson County where she played as a freshman. The 6-foot-4 forward will have three years of eligibility starting next season. Putting The Student In Student-Athlete The Purdue women s basketball team does not shy away from challenging majors. Seniors Chelsea Jones and Drey Mingo both are majoring in biology with plans to attend medical school after graduation. Brittany Rayburn is an animal sciences major, and interviewed with Purdue s school of veterinary medicine on Jan. 20. Samantha Woods is majoring in chemical engineering with a concentration in entrepreneurship. Sam Ostarello is pursuing a major in movement and sport sciences and a minor in forensics. 2012 Recruiting Class For the sixth-straight year, the Boilermakers have inked a top 15 recruiting class. Hayden Hamby, a 5-foot-7 guard from Trinity, Ala.; Taylor Manuel, a 6-foot-3 forward from St. Louis, Mo.; Joslyn Massey, a 6-foot forward from Detroit, Mich., and April Wilson, a 5-foot-7 point guard from Louisville, Ky., all signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Boilermakers in the fall of 2012. HoopGurlz ranked the class 13th nationally while the All-Star Girls Report has the class at No. 17. 2011 European Tour Purdue went 3-0 during its 10-day trip to Europe Aug. 5 to 15, 2011. The Boilermakers were able to hold 10 practices in preparation for the first international tour under head coach Sharon Versyp. The team spent five days in the Czech Republic, two in Slovakia and three in Austria. A Tradition Of Success The Purdue women s basketball team is among the elite programs in the country. Its tradition includes an NCAA Tournament title (1999) and a total of three Final Four appearances (1994, 1999, 2001). The Boilermakers are the only Big Ten school to have won a national championship in women s basketball. Purdue has appeared in the NCAA Tournament a total of 21 times, all in the last 23 years. The Boilermakers have advanced to the Sweet 16 on 12 occasions, the Elite Eight eight times (twice under Versyp) and hold a 17-1 record in NCAA Tournament first-round games. The only first-round loss was in 1996. Purdue has won seven Big Ten regular season titles and a conferencebest seven Big Ten Tournament championships (two under Versyp). The Boilermakers have advanced to the finals of the Big Ten Tournament 11 of 17 times. Sharon Versyp, a former Boilermaker point guard, has led Purdue to two Big Ten Tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearances in her five seasons as the head coach at her alma mater. At Purdue, she has averaged 22 wins per season, including a 17-7 record in the postseason. Versyp signed a contract extension that will secure her presence on the Boilermaker sidelines through the 2016-17 season. Versyp s impact on basketball in the Hoosier state was recognized on April 24, 2010, when she was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility, an honor that includes Larry Bird and John Wooden. The Mishawaka, Ind., native is known for her prowess in defense, game preparation, individual player development and team building. Recruiting is a key to success and Versyp and her staff have proven that they can attract elite players to Purdue. Each of Versyp s five signing classes has been ranked in the top 15. Equally impressive to the on-court accolades are the team s academic achievements under Versyp s guidance. For three-straight years, the Boilermakers earned a team GPA of 3.10 or better. In 2010-11, Versyp guided a team without any seniors to a 21-12 record and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. An extremely promising season, turned into one filled with unprecedented adversity. First, starting point guard, KK Houser suffered an ACL injury four minutes into the first regular-season game. Then, less than 48 hours after Purdue captured its second Preseason WNIT championship under Versyp, starting forward Drey Mingo was hospitalized with a life-threatening case of bacterial meningitis. Mingo would rebound from her illness and was a key along with Brittany Rayburn and Courtney Moses in Purdue s late season success. Along the way, Versyp claimed her 100th victory at Purdue with a 65-64 win over Michigan on Jan. 6. Versyp returned to her alma mater as Purdue s eighth head coach on April 10, Page 6 - Purdue Women s Basketball Game Notes Head Coach Sharon Versyp - Sixth Year at Purdue - School Record 129-66 (64-32 Big Ten) Career Record 246-131 (73-39 Big Ten) 2006. Versyp, a former Boilermaker point guard, as a player led her teams to three consecutive winning seasons when the program had enjoyed only one winning campaign in the previous 10 years. In her first year as head coach at Purdue, Versyp compiled a 31-6 record that included a second-place finish in the Big Ten regular season, a Big Ten Tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight. Versyp was named the 2007 WBCA Region VI Coach of the Year. Versyp s win percentage in 2006-07 of 83.8 percent (31-6) was tops for a first-year coach. The 31 wins equals the second-most in school history and Versyp is the only firstyear head coach to achieve a 30-win record. Versyp was the head coach at Indiana prior to Purdue, where she led her team to a 19-14 season, 9-7 in the Big Ten and the quarterfinals of the post-season WNIT. The nine-game improvement was the second largest turn-around in school history for a first-year head coach. Prior to her stint with the Hoosiers, Versyp was the head coach at Maine for five seasons where she amassed a 98-51 record, including a 67-19 America East Conference record. Versyp s teams won three straight America East regular season championships (2003, 2004, 2005) and in 2004 also won the America East Tournament title earning an NCAA Tournament berth.
