Ek het in 2013 die groot blou hekke van Hoërskool Roodepoort betree met n mengelmoes van gevoelens in my hart - dit het gewissel tussen vreugde (want ek is uiteindelik oud genoeg om ernstig opgeneem te word) en vrees (want die matrieks was REUSE). Nou is dit 2017. My hart is weereens vol verskeie emosies en ek verlaat nou die groot blou hekke, wat ek eens op 'n tyd as 'n bang graad-aggie ingestap het, as 'n reuse Matriek, gereed om die grootmenswêreld - buite die groot blou hekke van Hoërskool Roodepoort - te betree. Ek weet nie wat die toekoms vir my inhou nie, net soos ek in 2013 nie geweet het wat die Hoërskool vir my sou inhou nie, maar dis die lekker van die lewe. Een van my gunsteling aanhalings lui: "Life is like a roller coaster. It has ups and downs, but it's your choice to scream or to enjoy the ride." So, knyp jou oë styf toe, sit agtertoe en geniet die dele van jou lewe waaroor jy geen beheer het nie. Doen net altyd jou bes en dan sal God sorg vir die res. To the new Matriculants: Matric is like the Tower of Terror at Gold Reef City. It seems scary - it is scary - but if you close your eyes and enjoy it, it will be over in 10 seconds! Aan al die ou Matrikulante: Dis nou tyd vir ons om op 'n nuwe "roller coaster" te klim, so geniet die rustige stappie wat jy soontoe neem na 'n baie rowwe rit en mag die realiteite van julle drome julle grootste verwagtinge oortref. En dan aan al die Roodies: dankie vir die wilde rit. Roodies was 'n groot hoogtepunt in my lewens-"roller coaster" en ek koester al die laagte- en hoogtepunte vir ewig in my hart. A new branch of prefects has been created. The LTSM Prefects (LEARNER TEACHER SUPPORT MATERIAL) are a solid group of twelve beautiful, intelligent and dedicated grade 11 girls. This is still new for everyone and it will take a bit of time to get used to, but the girls are ready to take on any challenge. "BRING IT ON! " they say. The LTSM Prefects went on a camp of self-discovery. Wow! The camp was an adventure of a lifetime, they got to bond and know each other better and were trained to improve their leadership skills. These leaders are ready to support, help and guide the learners of Hoërskool Roodepoort. They are ready to serve the school. Get ready for an awesome year with the following LTSM Prefects: Saranne, Cassidy, Loula, Allisa, Shaahlaa, Camron O, Camron M, Jay, Ezmeralda, Chantel, Koketso and Letabo. They are guided by the gentle wisdom of Mrs van der Merwe, Mrs Human, Miss van Schalkwyk and Mrs Bloem. These women are the ideal role models every girl can look up to. 2018 HERE WE COME!! If you run, and you run, then you will keep on running Gedurende ons feesweek het Hoërskool Roodepoort die eer gehad om ons eerste Fun Run aan te bied. Dit sal beslis ook nie ons laaste Fun Run wees nie! Daar het ongelooflik baie mense deelgeneem, van jonk tot oud en selfs n hond of twee. Baie mense het deelgeneem aan die 2km of die 4km. Daar was n paar fikse mense wat dit gewaag het om aan die 8km deel te neem. Ons bedank graag almal wat die dag n groot sukses gemaak het. Dit was n wonderlike ervaring. The third term was a profoundly successful and active term for the most beautiful girls in the school: The Girls Choir. The Choir and Revue learners hosted the annual Roodie Cultural evening. We also participated in Laerskool Horison s choir festival. The choir was the first performers for both showcases, their beautiful harmonies echoed through the school hall, they truly opened each festival with great energy and in perfect harmony. On 23 August the girls performed at the Tswane Youth Arts Festival in Pretoria. They performed a set that portrayed their authentic talent. Their rendition of Santo left tears in the audience members eyes. All About That Bass allowed the girls to send a relatable message to the audience. Their final song, the Xhosa folktale Dubula was a show-stopper. They deserved the well-earned standing ovation. Our Roodie Revue has moved from being the new kids on the block, to the game changers of life on stage. Their theme this year was: Sailors. And let me tell you, they definitely ruled the seven seas. Miss van Zyl, one of the revue teachers, had a few words to share. (The highlight of the year was working with awesome learners and teachers, and attaining FIRST POSITION TWICE!.) Ms van Zyl says the level of team work and team spirit improved from the previous year. This enabled the learners to be at ease with another much sooner. What we can expect in 2018 is: a new theme, surprises and great music. From Miss van Zyl to the team; "Guys. Thank you for the awesome year of Revue. n Hele dag weg van die skool af. n Hele dag in die natuur terwyl die res van die leerders skool gaan So n dag, is n heerlike dag! Op 4 September 2017 het al die Biologie leerders saam met hul onderwysers op n uitstappie na die Botaniese Tuine gegaan. Die uitstappie was deel van ons kwartaal taak en ons het dit almal vreeslik baie geniet! Baie dankie aan die betrokke onderwysers se harde werk en beplanning om die dag n sukses te maak. What a way to end the festival: a evening filled with laughter, fun and moments to capture forever. The 60 s, 70 s, 80 s-theme definitely set the tone for a magical evening. From the music to the décor, there was nothing to complain about. There was no excuse for missing such an event. Of all the events throughout the Festival, the Spring Ball definitely shone the most. The ladies looked awesome and the gentlemen weren t too shabby either! 6 to 11pm, seemed too short. I guess the saying: Time flies when you re having a good time is accurate after all! The lighting gave everyone a fair chance to show their wild side. This was the night to dance till you drop! It is hard to believe that we have to wait an entire year until the next Spring Ball, but when it does, it will be worth it! Masego Mametja Page 10

Lente is n tyd waarna Roodies altyd uitsien, nie vir die weer nie. Nee, ons sien altyd uit na die lente omdat ons groot Lentefees hou hier by Hoërskool Roodepoort! Die Lentefees is propvol aktiwiteite wat jaarliks verander, maar daar is een geleentheid wat elke jaar dieselfde bly. Een funksie waarna elke Roodie uitsien Die PERSONEELKONSERT! Dis n aand waar die onderwysers ons vermaak met uitstekende toneelspel en geloofwaardige optredes. Die onderwysers wys ons n ander fasset van hulself. Hulle bewys dat hulle meer as net n vervelige hoërskool onnie kan wees. Hulle stap op die verhoog en gee n asemrowende vertoning. Vanjaar het n paneelbeoordelaars hulle weergawe gegee op n paar tonele uit bekende dramas soos 7de Laan, wat vertoon was deur die onderwysers. n Paar van hierdie optredes was so goed dat dit maklik n wenner van n Oscar kon wees. Die onderwysers het kragtige vertonings van hul karakters gegee en ons laat smag na meer van hulle uitstekkende konserte. Ons kan met sekerheid sê dat die Personeelkonsert n groot treffer is wat nooit afgeskaf moet word nie. Aan die onderwysers: Dankie vir al die ongelooflike konserte sover. Aniel Strydom Page 11

The sports- and entrepreneur s day was definitely unforgettable, unbelievable and great fun! I think the sports day should have been called: The teachers win day. They really performed well in various sports such as: netball, hockey, rugby and soccer. The team of teachers pitted their strength against the first and best teams from the school s side. The competition was pretty tough, but the teachers rose to the challenge physically and mentally! One of the highlights was Miss van den Heever jumping so high to get the netball ball for her team; Miss van Graan making her team of teachers proud by sinking the netball ball so many times! Mr Kruger saving the teachers with his goalkeeping skills in the hockey game. Watching Mr Greyling, Mr Janse van Rensburg and Mr Van der Schyff play netball was rather hilarious, but it proved the fact that sport is not based on or blocked by gender! While a variety of sport was being played, there was also an incredible Entrepreneur s Day where the learners sold delicious food, fries, ice creams, popcorn, slush puppies and much more. The learners and teachers surely enjoyed this day! Seeing the teachers so competitive with the learners was honestly a breath-taking experience. At the end of the day the teachers team won! Hoërskool Roodepoort celebrated Heritage Day for the first time. Learners and teachers participated in this beautiful celebration of cultures. A great mix of different colours, attires and personalities made this special day extraordinary. The Rainbow Nation was well represented. Former South African President Nelson Mandela explained it well when he said the following in a Heritage Day speech: When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation. Hoe het julle gevoel toe julle uitgevind het julle is paartjie van die jaar? Freddie: Dit was vir my so bietjie onverwags gewees, maar dit het my so special laat voel Clerise: Dit was amazing! Ons het sommer mekaar ge-high'five en n fistpump gegee. (Smile van oor tot oor.) Beskryf julle verhouding in 3 woorde? Freddie: Having huge adventures Clerise: Exciting. Adventurous. Liefdevol. Hoe lank is julle al saam? Freddie: n Bietjie meer as 14 maande Clerise: 1 jaar 3 maande Hoe het julle ontmoet? Freddie: Ek het nuut in die skool gekom en ek ontmoet toe die Clerise meisie, maar aan die begin het ek gedink sy is die wierdste mens op aarde. Mettertyd het ons vriende geraak en met n pakkie Smarties en n Five-Star chocolate wen sy toe my hart. Clerise: Obviously het ek gedink "okay dis n nuwe dude so ja" maar soos ons begin chat het, wou hy altyd n happie van my kos hê bv. my Smarties en n Five-Star chocolate en toe vat alles vlam.. Het julle enige advies oor liefde vir ons lesers? Freddie: Dis nie altyd maklik nie. Maar as jy jou hele hart gee en jy is wertlik opreg lief vir haar, sal alles altyd ten goede uitwerk. Clerise: Liefde is soos n plant: as jy dit nie water gee nie, gaan dit nie groei nie. Daar is niks beter as liefde nie. Wat is julle grootste droom saam? Freddie: Om die hele wêreld vol te reis en elke land wat daar is, te besoek. Clerise: Om die HELE wêreld te sien. Wat is julle gunsteling herinnering saam? Freddie: Vir my moet dit definitief ons eerste date wees. Ek het haar na die Waterkloof-lugskou toe geneem. Ek was buite myself daardie dag, Vliegtuie en so n mooi meisie. Waarvoor kan n man nou meer vra? Clerise: Daar is so baie, maar as ek nou een moet kies sal dit wees hoe ek hom verras het vir sy 18de verjaarsdag wat ek en sy pa skelm beplan het. Our school bus was the first to arrive at Wits University on that Saturday morning. It was time for the Mini United Nations debating event! We waited alone for a while before other schools arrived. I was stunned by all the colourful uniforms. They were beautiful and professional at the same time. Each student wore his uniform with pride and confidence! The vocabulary level used during the individual speeches was beyond my understanding. All the participating students understood each other s questions and answer, not me. I was LOST! It literally felt like I was in parliament! Six well prepared Grade 11 girls from our school participated. There were three members in a group, each with a different topic. There were 80 groups present, 20 groups in each of the 4 categories. I attended the debate tackling the immigration issues and Mrs du Plessis attended the debate tackling the famine crisis in Yemen. Our girls performed really well and Simpiwe Sono won the best speaker award! Constance Kureva Page 17

This year the Public Speaking learners took part in the Radikale Redenaars competition s Experimental category for the second time. We aslo entered individual speakers The first round of the competition was at Hoërskool Noordheuwel. Everyone was excited and nervous at the same time. Levarno, a grade 10 learner, said that he wasn t that nervous: I know my team will do well, I m very confident that we are going to the next round. The competition went well overall and the Roodies did what we do best: leave a lasting and good impression! The second round was held on a Saturday in Pretoria. These were the Gauteng Provincial finals. There were at least 40 schools from all over Gauteng. The competition and number of people competing was quite overwhelming. Olwethu Gcuze said: I just pray that I don t forget my lines. Connor, a grade 9 speaker said: Seeing so many people makes me a bit nervous. Four teams (Grade 10 English, Grade 10 Afrikaans, Grade 11 English and Grade 11 Afrikaans) and one individual speaker (Tshepiso Moloi) made it through to the National Finals! The National Finals were held at Hoërskool Garsfontein on 14 October 2017. The results made our school proud! Two teams were placed second in the country: Grade 10 English and Grade 11 Afrikaans! Two teams walked away as NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: Grade 10 Afrikaans and Grade 11 English! No matter what the outcome is, the best part of public speaking is the way you get to meet other people and friendships are formed and alliances made. It is truly an unforgettable experience. From playing home, to travelling on the road. A hockey team moves from strength to strength each time that starting whistle goes off. Getting fabulous legs and great abs is just one perk for being a hokkie bokkie. Winning and scoring isn t the only thing that makes a team successful. It's about having fun and giving it your all with your team mates. Coached by Ms. D van Niekerk, Our first hockey team ended second in their league this year. Ms. D van Niekerk says the biggest highlight of the season was when Inge finally hit a beautiful backshot at the goal but, hit the post. "We honestly all thought it was going to be a goal". From Ms van Niekerk to her team: "You are all great individuals and great hockey players! Never doubt yourself and always strive for more. Matrics, enjoy the next chapter of your lives! As for the rest, I will see you all on the field in 2018. Under 16s: Coached by Mrs. Bloom Came third in the league. Under 15s: Coached by Mrs. Angel The under 15s placed second in their league. From Mrs. Nagel to her team; "Thank you for such a great season, it was an absolute pleasure coaching you girls. You have plenty of talent and you are a very strong and united team. Njabulo Mhlungu Page 20 These girls are the underdogs in Roodies sport that no one saw coming! The girls practise extremely hard, four times a week, and practise never ends early! This sport is not one that is dominated by females, yet this didn t get to our girls. They are passionate and determined about the game. Their sportsmanship is remarkable, not to mention their motivational spirit that keeps each other going. Watching them play will have you on the edge of your seat! A big shout-out and thank-you to the captain, Loulene Sterley, and vice-captain, Casey de Reuck. They are the sweetest girls ever, but once there is a ball or a bat in their hands you will see their true colours...

Njabulo Mhlungu Page 21 An interview with Jonel Albuquerque. Q: What is one thing you will not forget about the 2017 cricket season? A: That through thick and thin we stood tall, kept our heads up and never ever gave up. We also motivated each other to do better and that s something I have never seen before and will never forget. Q: What made this season different to any other? A: The new team and the new coach gave us a completely new experience. Q: What was your favourite match? A: The match against Hoërskool Florida. We expected to play West Ridge and ended up playing Florida. The match was extremely close and it all came down to the very last over! Q: What impact do you think team sports has on a school as a whole? A: It has a very big impact. Sport in general plays an import role on individuals. It can either show a good or a bad image of a school Q: What is one thing you would like to say to your team? A: This season was one of my favourites. Through defeat we still stayed positive and that shows a lot of character. Thank you Mr Janse van Rensburg and team for an amazing season! It is one never to forget.

Die twee spanne, die o/15s en o/18s, het einde Augustus deelgeneem aan n Fast Five -netbaltoernooi. Ons sê dankie aan die meisies, Juffrou Swanpoel en Juffrou Taaibosh se harde werk. Ons wens julle nog sukses in die toekoms toe. Hou aan met julle harde werk. Ons spog met 22 rugbyspelers wat nie net respek afdwing op die veld nie, maar ook met trots die sport speel. Connor Kinghorn, Storm Adams en Brandon Williams het vanjaar die 0/16 Lynx span gehaal! Nico Posthumus is ingesluit in die toerspan wat in die Oktobervakansie na Engeland getoer het. Siya Mokwena, Reinier Scheepers, Shaun Gobey en Nico Posthumus is gekies vir die 7 s uitnodigingsspan wat vanjaar na Argentinïe toer. Rugby is not only a sport.
