CELEBRATING 27 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Tampa Bay Chapter- American Singles Golf Association January 2019 President The year flew by. My first year as a Florida resident, and president of ASGA. The resident/president. It s been a momentous year for me. My first thoughts, as I write this, are to thank the current officers for making my job much easier than I assumed it would be. Bev Houghton, for her support and mentoring. Hunter Dixon, for his support as Vice President. Bill Conover and Rich Riley, for a great job as golf chairmen. Janet Dean and Julie Miller, for being dedicated to making AS- GA a group of friends who have great times together. Charlene Emmitt, for her dedication to growing the organization as our membership chair. Edie Senensky, as our handicap coordinator. Always reliable Rich Kreger, as a competent treasurer. Bobbie Clark, (our new president), for her competence as our organization secretary. Carolyn Obenberger, for her commitment to tending to our communications. Midge Orris, who is always supportive. Ray Preston for taking care of the 50/50 and his dedication. And last but not the least, all of you who helped when needed. The new officers for 2019 are: President - Bobbie Clark Vice President - Bill Conover Chairman of the Board - Co-Golf Chairpersons - Charlene Emmitt and Ken Schoenherr Co-Social Chairpersons - Julie Miller and Membership Chairwoman - Sandra Fulton Communications Chairwoman - Carolyn Obenberger Secretary - Bev Houghton Treasurer - Rich Kreger Facilities Coordinator - Midge Orris Handicap Coordinator - Edie Senensky Thanks you all for a great year! See you at the next event. ~ From the Golf Chairs Our December golf event, which was part 2 of the Club Championship, was postponed due to inclement weather. This golf outing has been rescheduled for January 13th at The Eagles and will be on the Forest Course. There will be a shotgun start at 12:00 and the cost will be $35 + tax. Hopefully we will be able to crown our Club Champions. The new golf chairs Charlene Emmett and Ken Schoenherr, have begun with two great events. January 6th at Brooksville, which is known for the dramatic series of holes, and on January 20th at Lansbrook. All our members are looking forward to playing and I know the new year will be exceptional golf. We will be hosting the Florida Cup this year, which has been scheduled for Innisbrook. The site selection will show some of the best golf in our area. The committee has already completed the initial steps of this event and it is the responsibility of all our members to help out to insure a successful Florida Cup. ASGA Tampa Chapter has always proven the ability to come together and present a strong effort which is needed. I wish to give Rich Riley a heartfelt thank you for being co-chair with me. Numerous times I would ask for his advice or listen to his recommendations, and when I was unable to golf, he took over all of the golf events. The success of the golf program was built on his experience and dedication to the group. We both wish every- Upcoming Multi-Chapter Events (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Cabo San Lucas - April 6-13, 2019. We re starting off with a repeat event from last year, the 22 nd Annual Treasure Island Kite Festival, on January 19. We will meet at the Tiki Bar behind the Thunderbird Resort at 1:00 p.m. to spend an afternoon watching kites fly. Here s the big picture for the coming year. While we don t have specific dates, we want to bring members together in social events that play on our active lives. For the great outdoors, hikes, paddles, bike rides, beach days are high on our list. Happy Hours, house parties, bowling, and sporting events, count on it. While we will schedule planned activities, we will have some pop-up fun, too. Follow announcements from the Tampa Chapter on Meetup. Open the ASGA blasts that come your way. Social events are a great way to meet your fellow members off the fairways when we let go and forget about that ball that went in the water. ~Janet Dean and Julie Miller From the Handicap Chair I am wishing everyone a Happy New Year and a year of great golf. The ASGA Golf Chairs have many golf events planned and it is a real asset in the planning to have current handicaps. It is also easier on everybody if your handicap service is with ASGA through FSGA using the GHIN system. Not to mention the price is probably the most reasonable at $22.00. It is time to renew or sign up for your ASGA GHIN handicap service for 2019. It can be renewed on the ASGA Tampa Bay Singles Golf webpage and using the PayPal function or by sending a check made out to ASGA Tampa Bay to Edie Senensky, 351 Steeplechase Lane, Palm Harbor, FL 34684. You may also pay at the January monthly meeting. Deadline for payment for uninterrupted service is January 17 th. Happy golfing and remember, post those scores. ~Edie Senensky 2019 Florida Cup October 4 th - 6 th Innisbrook Golf Resort Palm Harbor, Florida The Tampa Chapter is hosting this special event in 2019. We are looking forward to seeing a lot of our Tampa Chapter members participating in this wonderful event. There were 110 ASGA Florida Chapter members at the event in Orlando in 2018. We will be staying and playing at the Renowned Innisbrook Golf Resort. Golf will be on the Island Course and the South Course. There will be two tournament formats. A twelve man/woman team will play in a team match play format. This will consist of an alternate shot one day and a singles match play the other day. Our second tournament is a Shamble format both days. Handicaps will be used to create evenly matched teams for each format. The Shamble format had almost as many participants in 2018 as Team format. There will be a large array of cash prizes, multiple Grand prizes and 50/50. Included with the weekend will be: Friday Reception w/appetizers and live music at the fire pit. 2 rounds of golf 2 nights accommodations Saturday Dinner Buffett w/ DJ & dancing Sunday Awards Luncheon This is sure to be a great weekend of golf, friendship, fun and food. We need the support of Tampa Chapter members as volunteers and participants. We want to make this a memorable weekend for all. Registration forms will be sent out and available in February. ~Bev Houghton

Golf Tip An Easy Accuracy Tip For Consistency Stare down the ball: Not with your eyes, with your clubface Every bad result in golf can be traced back to a root cause. If you're struggling to hit accurate drives, the issue is a lack of clubface control. Many amateurs start their backswings by whipping the driver way inside the target line and opening the face. From there, they re-route the club on a looping path that comes into the ball from outside the target line the classic over-the-top move with an open face in relation to the path. You can guess what happens next. The ball slices right of the target. If by some luck or last-second adjustment they can close the face, the ball flies on a straight line but left of the target. How many times have you heard another golfer get frustrated after setting up to hit a drive that flies left to right and presumably in the fairway only to see the ball go dead left and into the trees? If a round of golf for you is constant guesswork of where the ball might end up, you can improve your accuracy if you fix the cause and control the clubface better through impact. It starts by making a better takeaway. No more whipping the club inside. Instead, pretend the clubface has vision, and its job is to swing back while keeping its eyes on the ball. In the photos above, my club starts squarely behind the ball and does not rotate open in the takeaway. Copy this move. I want you to keep it staring at the ball as long as you can when you take it back. What you'll find is that this gets you to make a backswing where your club, hands, arms and body all turn together. This is the type of synchronized movement that allows you to control the clubface. Ideally, it should return to the ball facing your target, and your shot will fly straight. Even marginal improvements in clubface control will reduce the dispersion of your off-line hits. You'll be in play a lot more often. ~David Leadbetter, golfdigest.com From the ASGA National Office - New Rules in Golf Geared to Speed-up Play The biggest change in the USGA Rules of Golf in decades took place January 1, 2019. Many of the rules allow for a quicker pace of play. Please take a few minutes to review this video and begin to play a faster round of golf yet keeping the integrity of the game where it should be: www.singlesgolf.com/newgolfrules2019
