Tiredness and Fatigue Fatigue affects your safety and your health! 1. Learn to recognise the signs and symptoms 2. Alertness and performance are directly related to sleep. Only sleep can maintain or restore performance levels 3. Make the best use of your rest periods to prevent a cumulative buildup of effects of fatigue

Handling Deck Plates Don t make a deathtrap out of a deck plate! 1. Open plates should ALWAYS be protected by a barrier or guardrail AND clearly visible warning notices 2. Always replace opened plates IMMEDIATELY when you have finished work 3. Plates should always be refitted correctly, to prevent trips and falls

Hot Work Bright sparks? Ask questions! 1. Is it NECESSARY and is it SAFE? 2. Have you carried out a thorough RISK ASSESSMENT and obtained a PERMIT TO WORK, if necessary? 3. Intervention Safety doesn t happen by accident! 1. Take RESPONSIBILITY for safety 2. If you see something unsafe, do something about it! 3. What s worse worrying about upsetting someone, or living with the consequences of ignoring something?

The Monkey Fist Don t make a weapon out of a weight! 1. Learn how to tie one properly 2. NEVER tie a metal weight to a heaving line!

Out on Deck PPE: wear it it could save your day! 1. Wear a hard-hat, plus a chin-strap if fitted 2. Close or secure all open doors 3. Safety shoes should always be worn outside of the accommodation block they provide protection from slips, trips, and falls as well as from impact and crush injuries

Mooring Deck Safety The mooring deck is no place for rope tricks! 1. ALWAYS keep a lookout for yourself and your colleagues 2. NEVER stand in the bight of a rope 3. A bight isn t always immediately obvious never step over a line while handling it

Snap Back Zones The yellow areas are there for a reason! 1. Avoid standing in the vicinity of a line under tension 2. A line could come under sudden additional tension at any moment 3. Good practice and correct PPE are vital for your safety

Watertight Doors Watertight doors don t take chances! 1. UNDERSTAND the difference between bridge control & local control on YOUR ship 2. ALWAYS obey the instructions for operating a watertight door 3. NEVER pass through a watertight door that is moving

Confined Spaces Confined spaces KILL don t be the next victim! 1. The atmosphere of any enclosed or confined space is potentially LETHAL 2. ALWAYS follow correct entry procedures. NEVER enter alone 3. Over half of confined space fatalities occur while attempting to rescue another person!

Hearing Protection Your hearing protect or lose it! 1. ALWAYS wear hearing protection in engineering spaces, etc. 2. Ignoring this simple advice WILL damage your hearing PERMANENTLY 3. As a guide, if conversation is difficult, then you need to protect your ears
