Ingestion may lead to abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. For allergic individuals the symptoms are more severe, especially difficulty in breathing, & immediate medical assistance is recommended. Acute Selenium poisoning is unlikely with Barium selenate but symptoms are irritation of the nasal, respiratory and gastro-intestinal tracts, persistent garlic odour on the breath, metallic taste in the mouth, pallor, irritability, excessive fatigue. Damage to the spleen, liver and bone marrow may also occur. Immediately hold eyes open & wash continuously for at least 15 minutes with fresh running water. Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping eyelids apart & away from eye & moving the eyelids by occasionally lifting the upper & lower lids. If discomfort persists, seek medical attention. Removal of contact lenses after an eye injury should only be undertaken by skilled personnel. Immediately flush body & clothes with large quantities of water. Quickly remove all contaminated clothing & footwear. Wash affected areas with water (& soap if available) for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention if irritation develops. Wash clothing 2

before re-use. Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Lay patient down. Keep warm & rested & observe for any signs of an allergic reaction. If breathing is difficult, obtain medical attention. If swallowed: Contact doctor or National Poisons Centre (0800 764 766). DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Wash out mouth thoroughly with water & give plenty of water to drink. For significant quantities, lean patient forward or place on left side (head down, if possible) to maintain open airway & prevent aspiration & refer for medical attention without delay. Provide a copy of this document to the practitioner. Workplace facilities: Required instructions: Notes for medical personnel: No specific workplace facilities required. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. If skin or eyes irritation occurs wash off immediately. If swallowed do NOT induce vomiting. Environmental precautions Procedure for a spill Spilled product & washings must be prevented from entering any drains or waterways, or from contaminating the ground. Keep all bystanders away. Wear appropriate protective gear. Re-position any leaking containers to minimise any further leakage. Dam and absorb spill with an absorbent material (sand or soil). Shovel the absorbed material into a drum or similar robust container. Dispose of in an approved landfill. Decontaminate the spill area with detergent and water and rinse with the smallest volume of water possible.
