The Bullet July 2018 WELCOME Welcome to the July edition of our newsletter. Who can believe we are already over half way through the year. We have now successfully relocated to the Fairfield College pool, swimming alongside the Fairfield Swimming club. We have had a lot of positive feedback regarding the move and really appreciate all your support and patience. It is fantastic to see our Club once again training in one location, with our Juniors, Seniors and coaches all back together. This certainly makes life a bit easier. Good progress is being made on the renovations at Waterworld, with the completion date still on target for October. We are really looking forward to returning home in the newly renovated complex in term 4. July sees the start of the new swimming year, so we would just like to remind everyone to ensure that you are up to date with all of your Club fees and payments. If you haven t received an email regarding these, please contact our Ace Treasurer. Thank you to all of those that attended our Prize Giving and AGM on the 24 th June at Te Rapa Primary School. It was great to see such a good turnout and we hope you all enjoyed the evening. Congratulations to all our award winners. You thoroughly deserve them. We are however proud of all our swimmers, whether they won an award or not. You are all truly amazing. Our new committee has been formed and details of this can be found later in the newsletter. As a community volunteer run organisation we need parents and supporters to run the Club effectively. For all of you that have put your hand up to be on the committee, thank you. We really do appreciate it. Without you, there would be no Ace Swimming Club. If you would like to be involved, please let us know. Finally a special mention needs to go to Jane Wilson, you stepped down as the Club Treasurer at the AGM. Thank you Jane for the dedication and skills you have brought to the Club. We have appreciated all that you have done and will miss you as part of our Committee. Good luck to all our swimmers competing over the next month. There are a number of meets happening for both our senior and junior swimmers and we know they will all give it 100%. GO ACE!!! COACHES CORNER What a couple of months it as been. Not only have we relocated to the Fairfield College Pool, but we ve also had our juniors and seniors competing in a number of swim meets around the country. Our Bill Grey Meet was held on the 27 th May and it was great to see so many Ace swimmers compete. We know that for a number of you this was your first meet, so we hope you enjoyed it and are looking forward to your next meet! Our swimmers were outstanding, with a number of great PBs swam. It was great to see so many happy kids, and with so many ribbons. Well done to you all. A big thank you to all our parents that helped out in various roles throughout the event. We couldn t have done it without you. A special thank you to Cameron Mumby. With our usual announcer not being able to make it, Cameron stepped up and carried out the announcer role (we have to note this was his daughter s first meet, so he was new to the swimming scene!). He did an awesome job. Thanks Cameron! Ace were back in action on the 9 th & 10 th June at the Taupo XLR8 meet. Our swimmers competing included Carlos Hardie, Orlando Hardie, Jodie Ranui, Tankiko Shane, Imogen Barnes, Olli Mouat, Emma Wallis, Keira Wallis. There were some massive PBs recorded, with some swimmers reaching double figures. Imogen clocked an 18 second PB in the 200IM, Carlos took 15 seconds off his backstroke time, Emma took 11 seconds off her 200m backstroke time and Keira smashed her 400 freestyle time by over 16 seconds. However, the PB of the meet goes to Taniko who took 47 seconds off his 400 IM, followed up by 10 seconds off his 200m backstroke. This is just amazing. Orlando collected the highest XLR8 point for the Ace team (157), whilst Keira had the most for the girls (93). A special mention needs to go to Carlos Hardie who despite already having the 400m freestyle NZ Short Course qualifying time, went under it again and also qualified for the 200m IM. A big thanks to coach Paul and to Team Manager Caroline Wallis for keeping the team in line. During the same weekend of the Taupo XLR8 meet, we also had swimmers competing in the Auckland Open Championships. This meet is the last chance for many athletes to qualify for the NZ Open Championships and saw swimmers compete in Open age bands. Emma Parson narrowly missed out on the 50m breastroke final, finishing in 11 th place, and lowered her 100m freestyle time to 1:07. Older brother Caleb placed 9 th in his 50m backstroke. Danyon Hardie knocked 3 seconds off his seasons best for the 400m IM, finishing 4 th. His 100m freestyle was just a split off his lifetime best and he took out the bronze medal. He pushed hard on the final day and took the silver medal in the 200m IM. These were great results for our swimmers, considering they were competing against swimmers already in their adult years. Did you all read Paul s post on Facebook regarding training in the cold weather. This is an excellent post, especially since we are all training outdoors. If you haven t read it, please head to our Facebook page and take a look: We thought we would share Paul s tips from the article in the newsletter: Wrap up warm, using a parka jacket. Shoes are essential, you can lose a lot of heat through your feet. Two swim hats can provide added warmth during training. Warm up properly, keeping your jacket on until the last minute. Have a plan of how you are going to get changed. Minimise time getting changed, don t waste time getting in and out of the water. Pack medication if you suffer from asthma. Dry ears to avoid ear infections and wear a beanie. Pack a warm drink for when you are finished training. Do not warm up suddenly with a shower. Blow bubbles before starting to avoid the shock response of putting your head in the water. 12 & Under Race Suit Restrictions As from 1 July 2018 Auckland has adopted a Race Suit Restriction policy for their 12 and under swimmers. This states swimmers aged 12 and under are no longer permitted to compete in Technical Swim Suits at ASA meets. The two exceptions to this are the ASA Open Champs and the ASA Group Champs. A full list of approved suits is currently being complied and will be distributed shortly At this stage Waikato have not adopted this policy. We will let you know if there are any changes. Caro Cup TRAINING IN THE COLD CONGRATULATIONS to all of our swimmers that have been selected by Swimming Waikato to compete for Waikato in the Caro Cup. The Caro Cup is a relay event where Waikato compete against Auckland in all strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and IM). This years Caro cup is taking place at the Te Awamutu Swimming Complex on Sunday the 19 th August. We wish them all the best. GO WAIKATO!!!

We do however require someone to take on the position. If you would like to discuss the position, please contact Jane Roche. Jane will be able to advise you what it involved.
NOTICEBOARD COMMITTEE VACANCIES A big thank you to all our parents that have volunteered for our committee for the upcoming year. We do however still have a couple of vacancies on our committee and urgently need someone to fill the positions. Joining the committee is a great way to be involved directly in your child s swimming and will not take up too much of your time. The committee meets once a month and we would love to see some new faces and hear some new ideas. Ace Recorder. We urgently require someone to fill the position as our Club Recorder. Val Strange has been giving up her time to help us with our Club Recorder position and we really appreciate this, but we do need someone to take on this role. Fundraising. This year we would really like to be more active in different fundraising activities for the Club, but to do this we need your help (it doesn t have to involve much of your time). General Committee. It would be great to have a few more people on our General Committee, parents with swimmers in both our senior and junior squads. This is a great way to be involved in your child s swimming and doesn t take up to much of your time. If you feel you could help with any of these roles, or would like more information, please contact Michelle on aceswimmingsecretary@gmail.com UNIFORMS We have a range of uniforms for sale, including the Ace long jackets, hoodies, singlets and t-shirts. The Ace long jackets have been extremely popular and are great for the outdoor swimming during these winter months. It s great to see so many of our swimmers wearing them. If you would like to order any of our awesome Ace uniforms, please email Pearl at kiwipands@xtra.co.nz and copy the email to the Ace Treasurer (acetreasurer@gmail.com). Uniforms need to be paid for before they are distributed. If you have any queries, please contact Pearl. HEALTH & SAFETY Just a reminder, if you have an accident or some sort of incident at trainings or a swim meet, you need to report this to your coach within 24 hours (if possible, immediately). A form then needs to be completed and handed to the Health & Safety officer within 36 hours. If this does not happen, you may not be covered by ACC or Health Insurance. If you have any queries, please contact Dave Musto, our Health & Safety officer. ACE SWIM CAPS Another reminder regarding our Ace swim caps, which are at a bargain price of $5. Other Clubs are charging up to $15 for their caps. Why not order a couple more. It s a great price, and you can never have too many caps. They don t just have to be worn at our Ace trainings. It s great to see our Ace name pop up all over the place! If you would like to purchase another cap, please contact Pearl (as per the address above).
