Scouting the Terrapins Under the direction of fourth-year head coach John Tillman, Maryland enters Saturday s contest ranked eighth in the nation via the USILA Coaches Poll after putting together a 10-3 mark to date. The Terps losses have come against nationally-ranked foes North Carolina (11-8), Johns Hopkins (11-6) and Notre Dame (6-5) in the ACC Semifinals. Meanwhile their victories are against Mount St. Mary s (16-3), UMBC (14-3), Syracuse (16-8), Duke (10-6), Stony Brook (11-8), Villanova (12-10), Michigan (13-5), Virginia (9-6), Robert Morris (19-6) and Notre Dame (12-8). The Terps are ranked among the nation s top 10 in seven statistical categories, including three in the top 5. Maryland stands No. 3 in scoring defense, holding its opponents to just 7.00 goals per game. Villanova (W, 12-10), North Carolina (L, 11-8) and Johns Hopkins (L, 11-6) are the only teams to reach double figures against the Terps. Anchoring the defensive effort for the Terps is senior keeper Niko Amato who stands fourth nationally in goals-against average (7.27) and eighth in save percentage (57.3). Senior long pole Michael Ehrhardt has registered a team-best 24 caused turnovers and picked up 47 ground balls, while starting defenseman Casey Ikeda and Brian Cooper have 14 takeaways apiece. Meanwhile, Maryland has been held to single digits just four times this season. The Terps stand 15th in scoring offense, averaging 11.62 goals per game. Six players have scored double-digit goals for Maryland this season, including senior midfielder Mike Chanenchuk who leads the team in goals (28), assists (16) and points (44). Rookie attackman Matt Rambo has also topped 20 goals this season, turning in 29 points on 24 goals and 5 assists as the team s second-leading scorer. Faceoff specialist Charlie Raffa has been spot-on this spring where he has won 142 of the 212 draws he has taken this spring for a 67.0 percentage. He is ranked No. 2 nationally in winning percentage and with an 8.09 ground balls per game average, he stands 10th. Maryland is also one of the nation s best in clearing percentage, failing on just 16 of its 203 attempts. If there was an area of weakness for the Terps it would be their man-down defense which has surrendered 16 goals on 37 attempts. The Terps jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter, including a goal by midfielder Jake Bernhardt off an assist from John Haus just 43 seconds into the game. Navy not only battled its way back into the game, it took the lead after scoring five unanswered goals. After Navy s defense held Maryland in check for nearly 15 minutes, the Terps regrouped and scored on an extraman play with Haus cutting in from the left wing and Mike Chanenchuk providing the pass. Maryland tied the game when Kevin Cooper and Jay Carlson worked together to score on a transition play with 4:45 left in the half, sending the two teams into the locker room deadlocked at 5-5. Navy took the lead for a the final time when senior midfielder Bryce Dabbs dodged and fired his shot to the far post 1:31 into the third quarter. Maryland answered when Chanenchuk sent his pass to Owen Blye who was hugging the crease. That goal was the first of a five-goal run by the Terps, three to end the third quarter and the first two of the final stanza. Trailing 10-6 with 5:59 to go in the game, Navy had plenty of fight remaining as midfielder Pat Durkin stuck his lone shot of the game. The Terps answered just 49 seconds later when Chanenchuk went high to low on Navy goalie Nolan Hickey for his fourth point of the game. The Mids scored the final goal of the game at 4:21 with Hull feeding Dabbs for his second goal. April 5, 2013 Annapolis, Md. Tillman was on staff during the Mids memorable Memorial Day ride in 2004 when Navy faced Syracuse in the National Championship Game. One of Tillman s pupils at the Academy, J.L. Reppert (Class of 1999), is in his third season as an assistant coach at his alma mater. Reppert also served as an assistant on Tillman s coaching staff at Harvard in 2009. Tillman was also an assistant coach at Navy when current volunteer assistant coach Mickey Jarboe, Class of 2000, enjoyed a stellar career at the Academy as a twotime All-American and Kelly Award winner. Maryland grad and Terrapin associate head coach Ryan Moran spent three seasons (2006-08) as an assistant coach for the Midshipmen. Moran also served as the head coach at the Naval Academy Prep School during the 2005 campaign. Moran and third-year Navy assistant coach Ryan Wellner are both graduates of Chaminade High School. Wellner was a senior ( 96) when Moran was a freshman ( 99). Moran s father, Jack, gave Wellner his first coaching position in 2003 at Chaminade. Maryland senior midfielder Mike Chanenchuk s father, Mike, was a three-time All-American for the Midshipmen from 1977-79. The elder Chanenchuk was a member of four NCAA semifinal teams and served as co-captain of the 1979 squad that ironically dropped a 15-10 decision in the NCAA semifinals to the Terps. On the Road Again Since the beginning of the 2004 campaign, Navy has lost 31 of its 61 road games (neutral sites not included). Navy had lost 10 straight games on the road dating back to 2012, but finally got a check in the win column on March 29 at Boston U. The Mids dropped back-toback games to Maryland and Army in 2012, were 0-5 a year ago and dropped contests at Bucknell (9-6), Towson (14-9) and Lehigh (13-2) this season before dealing the Terriers a 13-7 loss. The Mids dropped a 14-7 decision to Army on April 12 on their last road trip. Navy has had a losing record on the road in four of its last five years. The Mids were 2-4 in 2010, 1-6 in 2011, 3-2 in 2012, 0-5 in 2013 and 1-5 in 2014. Seven of Navy s 14 games this season will be played away from its home venue, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium - at Bucknell (L, 9-6), at Towson (L, 14-9), at Lehigh (L, 13-2), at Boston U. (W, 13-7), at Army (L, 14-7), at Lehigh - PL Quarterfinals (L, 10-6) and at Maryland. Navy has averaged 10.9 goals in its 7 home games this season and just 7.2 goals in its 6 road games. Meanwhile, the Mids opponents have scored 52 goals (7.4) in games played in Annapolis vs. 67 on the road (11.2). Five Mids Named All-Patriot League Navy placed five players on the 30-man 2014 All-Patriot League First and Second Teams. Junior midfielder Gabe Voumard was named to the Patriot League First Team, while senior attackman Sam Jones, senior defenseman Nik Mullen, senior long stick midfielder Pat Kiernan and freshman faceoff specialist Brady Dove received second-team honors. A first-time honoree, Voumard is Navy s top scorer out of the midfield and tied for third overall with 23 points on 15 goals and 8 assists. Seventeen of his 23 points came against Patriot League competition where he scored at least two goals against five of the eight foes. Jones, also a first-time selection, leads Navy with 41 points on 23 goals and 18 assists. His 41 points are the most he has scored in any of his four seasons, improving upon the 38 he scored as a plebe. A starter in all 51 games over his four-year career, Jones has been held without a point in just 7 contests. This season he has recorded a goal or an assist in 11 of the 13 contests and 3 or more points in 8 games. Mullen has enjoyed a memorable season, anchoring a defense that has featured a pair of freshmen close defensemen and a first-year starting goalkeeper. Mullen s top performances have come against the best, Loyola s Nikko Pontrello without a point for the first time this season after coming into the game ranked No. 2 in the country in goals per game (3.70) and having scored at least two goals in every contest up to that point. Meanwhile, he held Johns Hopkins Wells Stanwick to an extra-man assist, far short of his 4.55 points per game which ranked ninth and his 3.27 assists per game which stood fourth nationally. Earning All-Patriot League honors for a third time, Kiernan will close out his career as the program s record holder in caused turnovers. He has turned in 73 takeaways over his four-year career, while posting the No. 3 (26), No. 4 (22), No. 11 (14) and No. 17 (11) singleseason caused turnover marks. Meanwhile, he has scored more points (16) and goals (12) than any other Navy defenseman in school history and is fourth among active Div. I defensemen. Dove has been spectacular in his first season at the Academy. He has won 158 of 270 draws this spring for a 58.5 faceoff winning percentage. He already stands eighth on Navy s career faceoff wins list and is second on the Mids single-season faceoff wins list. Among the nation s freshmen, he is third on the faceoff winning percentage leader board and is one of four Patriot League faceoff men who is ranked among the nation s top 20. First-year member Loyola won three of the five major awards. Senior attackman Justin Ward was named the Offensive Player of the Year, senior Joe Fletcher was named the Defensive Player of the Year and senior Jack Runkel was named the Goalkeeper of the Year. Colgate goalkeeper Brandon Burke was named the Rookie of the Year and Army s Joe Alberici was the recipient of the William Lawson Coach of the Year Award. 4 Covering the Mids Navy Sports Information 566 Brownson Road Annapolis, Md. 21402 Fax: 410-293-8954 Associate SID (Men s Lax) Stacie Michaud Office Phone 410-293-8773 Cell Phone 410-212-3761 E-Mail michaud@usna.edu Interview Policy All interviews with Navy head coach Rick Sowell and/or Navy lacrosse players should be arranged through Associate SID Stacie Michaud. Welcome to the Club! On March 12, 2013, Navy attackman Tucker Hull became the 30th player in program history to join the Mids elite list of 100-point scorers. Hull moved into a tie for 17th on Navy s all-time scoring list alongside Dennis Nealon (1988-91) thanks to a hat trick agianst Lehigh in the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals on April 22. With 132 points, he trails 14th-place Brian Keith (1987-90) by just 2. Meanwhile, Hull s classmate Sam Jones joined the elite 100-point list with 2 goals and an assist against arch rival Army on April 13, 2013. With his three-point effort against Lehigh, he moved into a tie for 10th on Navy s all-time scoring list alongside James Chambers (1946-49). Jones is 10 points behind ninth-place Dave Bayly (1972-74). Hull and Jones are only the third set of classmates in program history to reach 100 points. Mike Herger (197) and Brian Keith (134) from the Class of 1990 and Ian Dingman (188) and Billy Looney (103) from the Class of 2007 are the others. Hull and Jones are just the 13th and 14th players at Navy, respectively, to reach the 100-point mark as juniors. Mike Herger (109), Ian Dingman (102) and Brendan Schneck (121) accomplished it as sophomores. As Navy s leading scorer this spring with 41 points, Jones is just the seventh player in program history to reach the 30-point marker in each of his four seasons, joining Paul Basile, James Chambers, Ian Dingman, Mike Herger, Jeff Long and Nick Mirabito. As a sophomore, Hull produced 47 points on 23 goals and 24 assists, becoming the Mids first 40-point scorer since Nick Mirabito turned in 46 points on 23 goals and 23 assists in 2008... it s the most points scored by a Navy player since 2006 when Jon Birsner dealt out 36 assists en route to his 54-point effort. Hull has turned in a goal in 38 of the 51 games he has played in during his career, including hat tricks 14 times. He has dealt out assists in 28 games and has posted 33 multi-point performances. Among the 51 games Jones has played in, he has scored a goal in 40 contests and produced an assist in 34. He has recorded 24 multi-goal games, including hat tricks in 14 games. Additionally, he has put up multiple points in 37 contests. In Navy s 2012 opener against VMI, Hull and Jones combined to score 17 points, including 11 of the 14 goals... the last Navy tandem to combine for 11 goals was Brendan Schneck and Mike Hannan, who pitched in 6 and 5 goals, respectively, to help guide the Mids to a 16-8 win over Princeton on April 8, 1978. Jones turned in a remarkable 9-point (5-4) effort against the Keydets in 2012... just two years later, Jones posted a career-best 10-point performance (4-6) against the Keydets... it s the most points scored by a Navy player since Dennis Nealon produced 12 points against Washington College on March 20, 1991. Hull, meanwhile, led the Mids with six goals in the 2012 VMI game... it was the most goals by a Navy player since Taylor Harris scored six against Holy Cross on March 26, 2006. Teammate T.J. Hanzsche scored six goals against Holy Cross this season. Hull is one of only 3 players in program history to post three 8-point games in a season (2012) - 6-2 vs. VMI, 3-5 at Lafayette and 3-5 vs. Holy Cross... joins Mike Buzzell (1978) and Dennis Nealon (1990)... no Navy player has recorded four 8-point games in a season. Hull and Jones are among 8 players in school history and 17 active Div. I players to score 80 goals and deal out 50 assists over their careers... the other Navy players are Jeff Long (1974-77), Mike Buzzell (1977-80), Syd Abernethy (1979-81), Mike Herger (1987-90), Ian Dingman (2003-07), Nick Mirabito (2005-08). Hull stands among the nation s leaders in the following career categories: points (T33rd, 132), points per game (47th, 2.59), goals (43rd, 80), assists (T35th, 52), assists per game (38th, 1.02). Jones, meanwhile, is ranked among the nation s leaders in the following career stats: points (T22nd, 143), points per game (T34th, 2.80), goals (T32nd, 85), assists (25th, 58), assists per game (29th, 1.14). Over the last five seasons (2010-present), the Mids are just 5-16 in one-goal affairs. In 2007, Navy played a program-record seven one-goal games, including five that were decided in overtime. Navy was 1-1 2012 in one-goal decisions, marking the first time since 1996 that it had not played at least three one-goal games. The Mids are 0-3 in one-goal games this season, dropping overtime battles to Georgetown (9-8) and topranked Loyola (7-6) and a 6-5 regulation decision to sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins. Navy has lost four straight one-goal games. Its last win in a one-goal decision was March 9, 2013, when the Mids held off a rallying Lafayette squad, 12-11. Fantastic Faceoff Frosh Navy has struggled in its faceoff game over the last several years, but head coach Rick Sowell has looked to its youth to help spark a change. Freshman Brady Dove, who is ranked 15th nationally in faceoff winning percentage (158-270, 58.5) is already among Navy s top 10 on the career faceoff wins leader board, a list which dates back just 30 years when faceoffs were first documented. He stands eighth on the list and trails seventh-place Jay James (1998-00) by just 7. Dove, who garnered Second-Team All-Patriot League honors this spring, is second on Navy s single-season faceoff wins list with 158. Chris Pieczonka set the record of 173 over the course of 16 games in 2004. Dove became the program s all-time leader in faceoff wins by a freshman following a 12-for-17 performance against Lafayette. He took over the faceoff attempts record by a frosh just one game later at Towson when he won 17 of the 27 draws. Mike Haertel had been the record holder, winning 64 of 122 draws in 1997. He has lost the faceoff battle against the opposition just three times (Georgetown, Colgate, Army) this season. In the Mids Patriot League Quarterfinals loss to Lehigh, Dove won 13 of the 19 draws and picked up 6 ground balls. He dominated Johns Hopkins (4.18), winning 10 of the 14 draws. The Blue Jays were ranked 11th heading into the game, as was Drew Kennedy who was just 2 for 7 against the Navy rookie. Dove won 16 of the 21 draws in the Mids opener against VMI (2.8) which marked the best faceoff day for a Navy player since Pat Kiernan won 80.0 percent (8-10) of his draws against Towson last year. He had a remarkable performance against Holy Cross (3.1) where he claimed 19 of the 34 draws he took. The 19 wins tied as the third most in program history, just one off the record set in 1995 and later tied in 2004. It also marked the most wins by a Navy player since Logan West won 19 against Bucknell on March 3, 2012. Meanwhile, the 34 attempts are the most in school history, improving upon the previous mark of 32 set by Dan Sullivan (twice) in 1995. In the win over Lafayette, he won 12 of the 17 draws, including four in a row to start the fourth quarter in which Navy converted into four goals in just 1:14. Last year, Navy s Sean Reilly cracked the lineup where he won 31 of the 62 draws he took as a Plebe. He stands 19th on Navy s career wins list with 35 wins. With faceoff wins comes ground balls and Dove is leading the way in that category, as well. He has amassed 80 grounders which is tied for fourth on Navy s singleseason list. It s the most ground balls by a Navy player since Mikelis Visgauss picked up 80 in 2008. 2014 NCAA Faceoff Winning % List 1. 70.8 (237-336) Kevin Massa Bryant --- 12. 61.1 (140-229) Drak Kreinz Penn State 13. 59.3 (143-241) Liam O Connor Notre Dame 14. 59.0 (190-322) Casey Dowd Siena 15. 58.5 (158-270) Brady Dove Navy Navy s Career Faceoff Wins List 1. 363 Chris Pieczonka 2002-05 2. 313 William Wallace 2003-07 3. 266 Logan West 2009-12 4. 258 Chris Dingman 2000-03 5. 183 Jason Hull 1995-98 6. 181 Mikelis Visgauss 2005-08 7. 165 Jay James 1998-00 8. 158 Brady Dove 2014-present Navy s Single-Season Faceoff Wins List 1. 173 Chris Pieczonka 2004 2. 158 Brady Dove 2014-present Navy s Freshman Faceoff Wins List 1. 158 Brady Dove 2014 2. 64 Mike Haertel 1997 Navy s Freshman Faceoff Attempts List 1. 270 Brady Dove 2014 2. 122 Mike Haertel 1997 Kiernan Among Nation s Top Poles Senior long stick defensive midfielder Pat Kiernan is one of the best at his position in the country. With 26 caused turnovers last season, he finished the year ranked No. 3 on the Mids single-season list. He is also ranked fourth (22, this season), tied for 11th (14, 2012) and tied for 17th (11, 2011) on the chart. Averaging 1.69 takeaways per game this spring, he is 20th in the national rankings. He is fourth on the career ground balls list with 185, trailing third-place Steve Looney who posted 207 from 2003-06. Meanwhile, he turned in 68 grounders last spring to etch his name in at ninth on the Mids singleseason chart. At that point it was the most ground balls by a Navy player since 2008 when draw specialist Mikelis Visgauss grabbed 80. He is also 20th on the Mids career faceoff wins list, winning 24 of the 54 draws (44.4) he has taken. Kiernan has produced 16 career points, including a program-record 10 points in 2012. He is tied for fifth in the country among active poles with 16 points.
