All-Time Patriot League Tournament Record 11-2 All-Time NCAA Tournament Record 16-26 Game Preview Saturday s contest features the inaugural meeting between one of the game s most storied programs and one of its newest additions. Navy is in the midst of its 107th season of men s lacrosse, while Boston U. is in its first season competing at the Div. I level. The Mids (3-5, 2-3 Patriot League) and Terriers (1-7, 1-3 PL) will face off at 1:00 pm at Boston U. s Nickerson Field. The contest will be carried live by 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV with Pete Medhurst handling the call. Coverage begins with the Navy lacrosse pregame show at 12:45 pm. The game will also be streamed online for FREE via PatriotLeague.TV and NavySports.com. Live stats will also be available at NavySports.com. The Midshipmen, who have struggled away from the friendly confines of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium this season, enter the weekend on a three-game skid, dropping decisions to Towson, Lehigh and Colgate. After giving up double digits just once in its first five games of the year, Navy has surrendered 10-plus goals in each of its last three contests. Boston U. dropped six straight games before earning its lone win of the season, a 12-7 victory over Lafayette two weeks ago. The Terriers, however, are coming off a 7-3 loss at Bucknell last week. BU has scored double digits just once in its eight games this season, while allowing 10 or more goals five times. Patriot League Tournament With the addition of Loyola and Boston U. this season, the Patriot League Tournament will be expanded to six teams and will feature a quarterfinal round where the top two seeds receive a bye. The 2014 Patriot League Quarterfinals will be played Tuesday, April 22, with the semifinals on Friday, April 25 and the championship on Sunday, April 27. The No. 3 and 6 seeds will face one another in one quarterfinal, while the No. 5 seed will travel to the No. 4 seed. Those winners will then join the top two seeds in the weekend semifinal and championship rounds, played at the site of the highest overall seed in the tournament. The brackets will re-seed after the quarterfinal round. Five teams (Army, Boston U., Colgate, Holy Cross, Loyola) have played four of the eight conference games, while the other five teams (Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, Navy) have already played five Patriot League contests. Loyola is atop the standings and is the lone undefeated team at 4-0, while Holy Cross is the only winless team at 0-4. Taking the Field In... 10 Navy has lost just five games (57-5) when scoring 10 or more goals since the start of the 2004 season... Navy is 11-0 under Sowell when scoring 10 or more goals (5-0 in 2012, 3-0 in 2013, 3-0 in 2014). 9 Starting attackman Sam Jones needs 2 goals to become 1 of 7 Navy players all-time and 1 of 9 current Div. I players to score 80 career goals and dish out 50 assists. 8 The Mids have given up just 8 extra-man goals this season and are ranked 12th nationally in man-down defense (73.3) 7 Just 2 teams have won the faceoff battle against the Mids this season, however Navy has lost 7 straight games when the opponent has had more faceoff wins. 6 Only 6 of Austin Heneveld s shots in Patriot League play have not been put on goal this season (20 Sh, 14 SOG). 5 Sophomore attack T.J. Hanzsche has put up multiple points in 5 of the 8 games this seasons... meanwhile, he has produced at least 1 point in 14 consecutive games. 4 4 of Patrick Keena s 9 points this spring have come on extra-man offense, scoring a goal and added 3 assists. 3 Senior attack Tucker Hull needs 3 goals to join Navy s all-time goals scored list with 73. 2 Jones needs just 2 points to become only the seventh player in school history to reach the 30-point milestone in each of his four seasons and the first since Nick Mirabito (2005-08). 1 Navy senior long pole Pat Kiernan stands No. 1 on Navy s career caused turnovers list with 64 over his four-year career. He leads Navy this season with 13 takeaways and is ranked 28th nationally with 1.63 caused turnovers per game. 1

(Overall) First Meeting at PL Tournament Sowell vs. Boston U. (At Navy) First Meeting Inaugural Meeting 3.29.14, TBD Last Meeting Scouting the Terriers Boston U. has eased into Div. I men s lacrosse under first-year head coach Ryan Polley. While the Terriers have been rewarded with a win in just one of their eight games this season, they have been on the cusp multiple times. BU s lone win was a 12-7 victory on the road against Patriot League foe Lafayette on March 15. Meanwhile, the Terriers have losses against Mercer (17-6), Canisius (9-3), Lehigh (10-7), Providence (10-7), Vermont (13-9), Colgate (7-5) and Bucknell (7-3). While Boston U. ranks among the bottom 17 teams in 10 statistical categories, the Terriers are one of the best in extra-man offense. BU has scored on 44.0 percent (11-25) of its man-up opportunities with rookie attackman Ryan Johnston and freshman middie James Clarke accounting for a combined 7 of the 11 goals this season. Johnston has turned in 11 points on a team-best 9 goals and 2 assists this season, while 3 of Clarke s 4 goals have been on extra-man Freshman attackman Pat Myers, meanwhile is pacing the team with 15 points on 7 goals and a team-best 8 assists, while rookie attackman Adam Schaal has posted 13 points on 7 goals and 6 assists. Florida native Sam Talkow has been phenomenal at the faceoff x where he is ranked 14th nationally with a 61.4 winning percentage (89-145). He has taken all but 14 draws (Elliott Burr, 3-14) for the Terriers, as BU as a team stands 17th in the country (57.9). Although BU is giving up 10.00 goals per game, the defense is averaging 8.38 caused turnovers per contest which is the 17th-best mark in DI lacrosse. Leading the way are rookie defensemen Greg Wozniak, a starter in 6 of the 8 contests, and Cam Pincus, who has started 7 of the 8 games. Wozniak owns a team-best 14 takeaways and 15 ground balls, while Pincus has posted 11 caused turnovers and 11 grounders. Freshman keeper Christian Carson-Banister owns a 10.11 goals-against average and a 54.7 save percentage. He is averaging 11.75 saves per game which stands 10th nationally. Series vs. Boston U. Most considered the Mids season a Cinderella story. But the blood, sweat and tears spoke volumes for the Navy squad that fought to play in the program s first National Championship game since 1975. Over the course of the season, several milestones were achieved, including a school-record 15 wins. In addition to recording the most wins in Academy history, Navy earned its highest ranking No. 2 for five-consecutive weeks. Its 9-6 win over Maryland was the program s first win over a top-ranked program and one-of-six Navy wins over top-10 ranked teams. After sweeping through the Patriot League with a 7-0 record in its first season as a member of the league, Navy conquered Colgate and Hobart in the league s postseason tourney to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. By virtue of its Patriot League Tournament win, Navy earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, making its first appearance since 1999. The Midshipmen went on to gain the nation s support as they fought their way through the NCAA Tournament. First defeating Penn handily, 11-5, at home and then surviving a battle against seventh-seeded Cornell on the Big Red s home turf. Navy made it to the coveted national semifinals where it beat eighth-ranked Princeton, 8-7, before succumbing to Syracuse by a goal in the finale with better than 40,000 fans looking on. By year s end, seven Midshipmen garnered All-America kudos, including keeper Matt Russell who was named a First-Team All-American and the winner of the Ens. C. Markland Kelly Award as the nation s top goalkeeper. Ian Dingman (Second Team), Ben Bailey (Third Team), Mitch Hendler (Third Team), Joe Bossi (HM), Graham Gill (HM) and Steve Looney (HM) also garnered All- America recognition. Richie Meade was the recipient of the Morris Touchstone Memorial Award, given to the National Coach of the Year. Fallen Hero Not Forgotten For the fourth consecutive year, Navy will honor the memory of fallen Navy SEAL and former Navy lacrosse player Lt. Brendan Looney ( 04), who was killed in Afghanistan on Sept. 21, 2010. In each of the last three years, Navy s players voted who among his teammates best represented what Looney stood for as a man, a warrior and a teammate. Senior co-captain Pat Kiernan has been selected by his peers to honor Looney by wearing jersey No. 40 this spring. Seventeen of the 24 losses have been in games played either at the opponent s field or at a neutral site. Navy owns a 27-7 record at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium against Patriot League competition since joining the conference in 2004. The Mids are 21-7 during the regular season. The Mids have produced undefeated marks in conference action twice, 7-0 in 2004 and 6-0 in 07. Navy has won at least a share of the Patriot League regular-season title in five (2004-05-06-07-08) of the nine years it has been a member of the league. Additionally, the Mids have claimed the league s tournament crown five times (2004-05-06-07-09). 31 different Mids have garnered All-Patriot League recognition, while 19 of the 31 have earned honors multiple times. On the Road Again Since the beginning of the 2004 campaign, Navy has lost 29 of its 58 road games (neutral sites not included). Navy has lost 10 straight games on the road dating back to 2012... the Mids dropped back-to-back games to Maryland and Army in 2012, were 0-5 a year ago and have dropped road contests at Bucknell (9-6), at Towson (14-9) and at Lehigh (13-2) this season. The last time Navy won on the road was March 24, 2012, when the Mids scored a last-second goal to upset 12th-ranked Colgate, 12-11, in Hamilton, N.Y. Navy has had a losing record on the road in four of its last five years. The Mids were 2-4 in 2010, 1-6 in 2011, 3-2 in 2012, 0-5 in 2013 and 0-3 in 2014. Six of Navy s 13 games this season will be played away from its home venue, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium - at Bucknell (L, 9-6), at Towson (L, 14-9), at Lehigh (L, 13-2), at Boston U., at Army and at Maryland. Navy has averaged 13.0 goals in its 5 home games this season and just 5.6 goals in its 3 road games. Meanwhile, the Mids opponents have scored 39 goals (7.8) in games played in Annapolis vs. 36 on the road (12.0). 4 Covering the Mids Navy Sports Information 566 Brownson Road Annapolis, Md. 21402 Fax: 410-293-8954 Associate SID (Men s Lax) Stacie Michaud Office Phone 410-293-8773 Cell Phone 410-212-3761 E-Mail michaud@usna.edu Interview Policy All interviews with Navy head coach Rick Sowell and/or Navy lacrosse players should be arranged through Associate SID Stacie Michaud. Sophomore attack T.J. Hanzsche has earned a starting nod at attack in each of the last 16 contests. At least one Navy player has turned in a hat trick in 42 of the last 67 games (dating back to the 2009 season), including 5 of the 8 games this season. Sam Jones has pitched hat tricks in 4 contests this spring, while Tucker Hull and T.J. Hanzsche have twice registered hat tricks. Junior middie Gabe Voumard pitched his fourth career hat trick and first of the year against Towson. The three games Navy did not post a hat trick in were losses at Bucknell and Lehigh and at home against Colgate. T.J. Hanzsche (6), Sam Jones (5) and Tucker Hull (3) combined to score 14 of the Mids 21 goals in its win over Holy Cross. It was just the second time under head coach Rick Sowell that three players produced hat tricks. The first time was last year against Lafayette when Jones, Hanzsche and Gabe Voumard pitched three goals apiece. Among the 46 games in which they have played, Sam Jones and Tucker Hull has been held without a goal AND an assist in just 7 games apiece. Since 2004, Navy owns an amazing 57-2 record when holding its opponents to six or fewer goals, including a 15-1 mark in the last six seasons combined. Navy owns a remarkable 57-5 record when scoring 10 or more goals since 2004, including a 33-4 mark in the last six seasons (9-1 in 2009, 10-1 in 2010, 3-2 in 2011, 5-0 in 2012,3-0 in 2013 and 3-0 in 2014). At least one pole has scored either a goal or dealt out an assist every year since 1994. Senior close defenseman Nik Mullen produced his first collegiate point against VMI in this season s opener by dealing out an assist and extending the trend. Additionally, in Navy s win over Lafayette, senior long pole Pat Kiernan scored a goal while fellow senior pole Ben Sampson dealt out his first collegiate assist against the Leopards. Navy has registered a pair of man-down goals in each of the last two seasons and ironically in each of the first two contests. Patrick Keena (VMI) and T.J. Hanzsche (Georgetown) have Navy s short-handed goals this season. The Mids have lost 10 straight games on the road and are just 3-10 under head coach Rick Sowell. Navy has outscored their foes 50-20 in games its has won, while it has been outscored 55-32 in games it has lost. In games they have won, the Mids have outscored the opponent 25-6 in the first half. In games they have lost, the Mids have been outscored 31-11 over the first two quarters. National Leader Board According to the latest national statistics released on Monday by the NCAA, the Mids are ranked among the top 20 in four categories. The Mids are ranked among the top 10 in man-down defense (12th, 73.3) ground balls per game (15th, 32.38), faceoff win % (16th, 59.1) and caused turnovers per game (20th, 8.13). After finishing outside of the top 30 in each of the last five years in faceoff percentage, Navy rookie Brady Dove has the Mids among the top 20. Dove stands tied for 19th in the individual rankings, winning 59.4 percent (104-175) of the draws he has taken, while Navy as a team is ranked 16th with a 59.1 faceoff winning percentage. A new stat added to the NCAA rankings this season is clearing percentage. Navy, though, would probably have preferred it left off the rankings as the Mids are 55th among 67 teams (81.9). Navy hasn t had a player finish the season among the top 50 in goals per game since 2007 when Ian Dingman finished 19th (2.20). Sophomore T.J. Hanzsche is just outside of the top 50 in 53rd where he average 2.13 goals per game. Navy in the NCAA Rankings (out of 67 Teams) Category Rk Avg. Welcome to the Club! On March 12, 2013, Navy attackman Tucker Hull became the 30th player in program history to join the Mids elite list of 100-point scorers. Hull moved into 18th on Navy s all-time scoring list with a goal and an assist against Colgate last Saturday. With 122 points, he trails 17th-place Eddie McKinnon (1999-02) by just 4 points and is 8 behind 15th-place Rich Wehman (1980-83) and classmate Sam Jones. Meanwhile, Jones joined the elite 100-point list with 2 goals and an assist against arch rival Army on April 13, 2013. Jones is tied for 15th on Navy s all-time scoring list with 130 points alongside Rich Wehman (1980-83). He trails 14th-place Dennis Nealon (1988-91) by 2 points and 13th-place Brian Keith (1987-90) by 4 points. Hull and Jones are only the fourth set of classmates in program history to reach 100 points. Brendan Schneck (121) and Mike Hannan (101) from the Class of 78, Mike Herger (197) and Brian Keith (134) from the Class of 1990 and Ian Dingman (188) and Billy Looney (103) from the Class of 2007 are the others. Hull and Jones are just the 13th and 14th players at Navy, respectively, to reach the 100-point mark as juniors. Mike Herger (109), Ian Dingman (102) and Brendan Schneck (121) accomplished it as sophomores. Jones, who led the team last spring with 33 points on 21 goals and 12 assists, has reached the 30-point milestone as a freshman, sophomore and junior... he is one of only 7 players in program history to achieve that feat, joining Paul Basile, James Chambers, Ian Dingman, Mike Herger, Jeff Long and Nick Mirabito. Those players went on to score 30-plus in their senior years, as well. Jones currently leads the team in scoring with 28 points on 16 goals and 12 assists. As a sophomore, Hull produced 47 points on 23 goals and 24 assists, becoming the Mids first 40-point scorer since Nick Mirabito turned in 46 points on 23 goals and 23 assists in 2008... it s the most points scored by a Navy player since 2006 when Jon Birsner dealt out 36 assists en route to his 54-point effort. Hull has turned in a goal in 33 of the 46 games he has played in during his career, including hat tricks 13 times. He has dealt out assists in 28 games and has posted 29 multi-point performances. Among the 46 games Jones has played in, he has scored a goal in 35 contests and produced an assist in 30. He has recorded 22 multi-goal games, including hat tricks in 14 games. Additionally, he has put up multiple points in 33 contests. In Navy s 2012 opener against VMI, Hull and Jones combined to score 17 points, including 11 of the 14 goals... the last Navy tandem to combine for 11 goals was Brendan Schneck and Mike Hannan, who pitched in 6 and 5 goals, respectively, to help guide the Mids to a 16-8 win over Princeton on April 8, 1978. Jones turned in a remarkable 9-point (5-4) effort against the Keydets in 2012... just two years later, Jones posted a career-best 10-point performance (4-6) against the Keydets... it s the most points scored by a Navy player since Dennis Nealon produced 12 points against Washington College on March 20, 1991. Hull, meanwhile, led the Mids with six goals in the 2012 VMI game... it was the most goals by a Navy player since Taylor Harris scored six against Holy Cross on March 26, 2006. Teammate T.J. Hanzsche scored six goals against Holy Cross this season. Hull is one of only 3 players in program history to post three 8-point games in a season (2012) - 6-2 vs. VMI, 3-5 at Lafayette and 3-5 vs. Holy Cross... joins Mike Buzzell (1978) and Dennis Nealon (1990)... no Navy player has recorded four 8-point games in a season. Hull and Jones are among just 10 players in school history and 14 among active Div. I players with 70 goals and 50 assists. Fantastic Faceoff Frosh Navy has struggled in its faceoff game over the last several years, but head coach Rick Sowell has high hopes that its youth will help spark a change. Freshman Brady Dove, who is ranked 19th nationally in faceoff winning percentage (104-175, 59.4) is already among Navy s top 15 on the career faceoff wins leader board, a list which dates back just 30 years when faceoffs were first documented. He stands 14th on the list and trails 2013 graduate Evan McGoogan by just 4. Dove became the program s all-time leader in faceoff wins by a freshman following a 12-for-17 performance against Lafayette. He took over the faceoff attempts record by a frosh just one game later at Towson when he won 17 of the 27 draws. Mike Haertel had been the record holder, winning 64 of 122 draws in 1997. Just twice has he lost the faceoff battle against the opposition (Georgetown, Colgate). Dove has been nothing short of sensational this season. He won 16 of the 21 draws in the Mids opener against VMI (2.8) which marked the best faceoff day for a Navy player since Pat Kiernan won 80.0 percent (8-10) of his draws against Towson last year. He had a remarkable performance against Holy Cross (3.1) where he claimed 19 of the 34 draws he took. The 19 wins tied as the third most in program history, just one off the record set in 1995 and later tied in 2004. It also marked the most wins by a Navy player since Logan West won 19 against Bucknell on March 3, 2012. Meanwhile, the 34 attempts are the most in school history, improving upon the previous mark of 32 set by Dan Sullivan (twice) in 1995. In the win over Lafayette, he won 12 of the 17 draws, including four in a row to start the fourth quarter in which Navy converted into four goals in just 1:14. Last year, Navy s Sean Reilly cracked the lineup where he won 31 of the 62 draws he took as a Plebe. He stands 19th on Navy s career wins list with 33 wins. Sophomore pole Pat Menezes will also take draws this season, he was 3-for-4 against VMI in the opener and is 7-for-14 over two seasons. 2014 NCAA Faceoff Winning % List 1. 80.0 (108-135) Joseph Nardella Rutgers 18. 59.9 (82-137) Alex Daly Army 19. 59.4 (104-175) Brady Dove Navy 20. 58.7 (101-172) Brad Lott Michigan Navy s Career Faceoff Wins List 1. 363 Chris Pieczonka 2002-05 9. 154 Dan Sullivan 1993-95 10. 139 Frankie Coppola 2006-10 139 Chris Messineo 1994-97 12. 109 Michael Schaal 1999-02 13. 108 Evan McGoogan 2010-13 14. 104 Brady Dove 2014-present 15. 92 Robby Battle 2007-10 16. 89 Bart Orr 1997-00 17. 64 Tommy Wallin 2003-07 18. 54 Dan Decker 2005-08 19. 33 Sean Reilly 2013-present 20. 24 Pat Kiernan 2011-present Navy s Single-Season Faceoff Wins List 1. 173 Chris Pieczonka 2004 4. 137 Chris Pieczonka 2005 5. 129 William Wallace 2006 6. 126 Mikelis Visgauss 2008 7. 110 Logan West 2011 8. 106 Frankie Coppola 2009 11. 104 Brady Dove 2014-present 104 William Wallace 2007 Navy s Freshman Faceoff Wins List 1. 84 Brady Dove 2014 2. 64 Mike Haertel 1997 Navy s Freshman Faceoff Attempts List 1. 136 Brady Dove 2014 2. 122 Mike Haertel 1997 Department of Defense Since 2000, Navy s defense has been ranked among the top four nine times including No. 1 four times.
