NOTICE TO HORSE & PONY OWNERS STABLING AT BURY FARM Bury Farm Equestrian Village would like all owners of horses and ponies stabled to apply best practice at all times. We ask all owners to act responsibly towards the welfare of all animals on the show ground and make sure they are fit and well to be at the show. In light of recent cases of EHV-1 The first thing is not to panic. Quoting Phillip Ivens MRCVS (Vet) in the March 28th Horse and Hound, At present, there is no increased risk. We get a handful of EHV-1 outbreaks every year. Although this cluster of latest cases is a cause for concern, and a reminder that we should always be taking precautions to control contagious diseases, they are probably coincidental...people shouldn t panic. Just be vigilant for early signs and contact your vet immediately if you are concerned. Due to the current handful of cases Bury Farm Requests that stabled horses 1. Owners are responsible for checking you horse s temperature before you leave home or when arriving at the show ground (Thermometers are available from the Stable Managers). If the temperature is over 38.5oC, before you leave home do not bring your horse. If the temperature is elevated on the show ground the horses and those associated will be sent home. Although the chance of this high temperature being EHV-1 is very small, there is a good chance that there is a problem with your horse. We would suggest speaking with your local vet if you are concerned or we can contact our on call vet if required. 2. Be vigilant. The most likely way for your horse to catch or transmit a virus is through direct contact. Try not to let horses touch noses and be sure to avoid touching other people s horses yourself, or letting them touch yours. 3. Stables must be left clean. They do not have to be emptied completely but all muck, wet bedding, hay and haylage must be completely removed. Anyone that does not leave their stables in this manner may be fined 10 per stable. ALL STABLES HAVE BEEN SKIPPED OUT & SPRAYED WITH VIRKON DISINFECTANT PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL. If you wish to take any further measures preventative measures on an individual basis please discuss this with the stable manager.
