Other Comments / Explanations: N/A Race 1 gordon hotel portland maiden plate - 1700 metres: BERTO Upon straightening was steadied and shifted to the outside of the heels of Anne From Mayo to obtain clear running. Over the final 50m was carried inwards by Rosss Point which shifted in under pressure. Rider D Bates (Rosss Point) was spoken to advisedly. WANION Placed second at Penshurst 26 Dec 2016. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to run. Led. Trainer D Daffy advised when the field were leaving the mounting enclosure it was his intention to obtain cover with the gelding. Stewards noted Wanion had led at Penshurst the day prior and reminded Mr Daffy of his obligations regarding advising Stewards of any potential change of tactics in a timely manner. ROSSS POINT Laid in under pressure over the final 100m. ANNE FROM MAYO A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have a slower than expected recovery. Rider D Yendall was severely reprimanded for using his whip seven times prior to the 100m. HONOUR THE ROCK Raced wide without cover throughout before weakening badly from the 700m. Rider H Coffey could offer no explanation for the fillys performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in the off fore. Trainer C Calthorpe was advised he will be required to provide a Veterinary Clearance before the filly is accepted to race again. MILCAH Stewards approved apprentice P Pilley as replacement for rider D Moor who was delayed en-route. Race 2 WARRNAMBOOL FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUB 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1000 metres: Correct Weight was delayed to enable J Hill, rider of I Got Shivers that was officially placed fourth by the Judge, the opportunity to view a replay of the straight with a view to lodging an Objection. Satisfied there were insufficient grounds for an Objection, Correct Weight was declared on the Judges placings. ALAKAY Eased from the start. Settled at the rear. Shifted out upon straightening before racing wide down the straight. Performance queried. Rider M Payne reported the gelding was stepping back in distance from 1100m to 1000m and was of the opinion her mount may appreciate longer races. M Payne added she shifted out to the centre of the track upon straightening as in her opinion, the going was superior. A post race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.
ALONG CAME JONES Raced keenly in the middle stages. Held up prior to straightening. I GOT SHIVERS Passing the 800m shifted out across the heels of Iron Machine and was steadied. Approaching the 200m was bumped by Stella Effort which shifted in and away from Iron Machine. Passing the 50m was inconvenienced by Iron Machine that shifted in under pressure. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a mild case of heat stress. IRON MACHINE Began awkwardly. Raced wide without cover throughout. Shifted in under pressure in the straight. MOSHSTAR Passing the 50m had to be checked to avoid the heels of I Got Shivers that shifted in when taken in by Iron Machine. As a result went to the line unable to be fully tested. Rider N Beriman (Iron Machine) was severely reprimanded for failing to make a greater effort to prevent her mount from shifting in. PEGASUS MAGIC Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly shortly after the start. Raced wide without cover throughout. Rider J Eaton reported the colt that was having its first race start, was unsettled prior to the event and this may have contributed to the performance. HAAFRA HEAD Began awkwardly and lost ground. AQUIFER MIST A veterinary examination was undertaken at the barriers after the gelding was kicked by another runner. Subsequently Stewards ordered the late scratching of the gelding at 2.30pm. Prior to Correct Weight an announcement was made in regard to betting deductions. All monies bet for a win and/or place and concession betting on the late scratching to be refunded. ALJAMAAL Raced wide without cover throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. BALLAST Slow to begin and shortly after the start was bumped heavily by Miss Artorius. Over raced in the middle stages when the pace slackened. DESERT DUEL Near the 900m was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of Dont Babylon when the pace slackened, and as a result raced wide and without cover for the remainder of the race. SON OF TRIGGER Weakened in the straight. Performance queried. Rider C Caserta reported the gelding lay out but he could offer no further explanation. WILKIN Began awkwardly, shifted out abruptly making contact with Miss Artorius resulting in its rider H McKechnie becoming unbalanced for a short distance. Over raced in the early and middle stages when leading. Rider H McKechnie reported the gelding slipped on jumping. When questioned, H McKechnie explained she eased the pace through the early stages as she had been instructed to attempt to ride the gelding with cover. FURIOUS DAN Passing the 100m had to be eased away from the heels of Desert Duel that was under pressure. TELFORD Raced at the rear throughput. Performance queried. Rider D Yendall reported the colt that was having its first race start, never travelled well throughout. A post race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. DONTBABYLON Began awkwardly and shifted in abruptly making contact with Namib. Over raced in the early and middle stages when being restrained to settle outside the leader. LADY ANNABEL For some distance approaching and passing the 1000m was continually steadied to avoid the heels of Wilkin when the pace slackened. SHES LUCY Began awkwardly and lost ground. Over raced in the middle stages when the pace slackened. MISS ARTORIUS Hampered on jumping by Wilkin which began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. NAMIB Hampered on jumping by Dont Babylon that shifted in abruptly. Race 4 THE MIDFIELD GROUP BM78 HANDICAP - 3018 metres: WHO SAYS IM READY Settled outside the leader. Tactics queried. Rider J Eaton reported she had been instructed to ride the gelding with cover however after beginning well, her mount settled outside the leader and raced keenly. J Eaton added in hindsight she could have made a greater effort to restrain in an attempt to gain cover and have her mount settle.
CHOYSA Commenced a run three wide to improve around the field from the 1400m. Rider K Walters explained her mount was pulling and when racing wide, she elected to stride forward and challenge the leaders. It was noted similar tactics had been adopted upon the gelding when successful at its most recent start at Stawell on 10 December 2016. ITZ A DEBACLE Shortly after the start clipped the heels of Who Says Im Ready which shifted out marginally and knuckled. Under pressure from the 500m. Performance queried. Rider J Hill reported the gelding failed to handle the track conditions. A post race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. GO AND GET RICH Eased down from the entrance to the straight. Performance queried. Rider D Yendall reported the gelding failed to handle the track conditions. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a mild case of heat stress. BLACK SOUL Slow to begin. Over raced in the middle stages. SKIM Over raced in the early stages. Near the 2500m was steadied to avoid the heels of Itz A Debacle. SAINT BLACKWIRES Led and over raced through the early stages. Lay out rounding the home turn. Rider M Julius was fined $200 under the provisions of AR 145 for weighing in, in excess of one kilogram over her declared riding weight. BONNARD Near the 2800m was steadied to avoid the heels of Itz A Debacle which was taken inwards by Go And Get Rich (D Yendall) which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. Rider D Yendall (Go And Get Rich) was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear. Rider D Holland was questioned regarding his riding of the gelding in the straight and in particular from the 200m to the finish. D Holland explained he had ridden his mount along from the 600m whilst applying the whip, and near the 200m was conscious that he believed he had used the whip on five occasions as permitted under the rules. D Holland added he had been physically unwell in recent days however was satisfied his actions had no bearing on the placings. His comments were noted. D Holland was subsequently reprimanded for the use of his whip on six occasions prior to the 100m. ENTIRELY PERFECT Raced wide and without cover from the 1200m. Race 5 MICHAEL LUCAS ACCOUNTING BM64 HANDICAP - 2012 metres: CONSIELLO Slow to begin. Near the 1300m was steadied to avoid the heels of Master Degree when the pace slackened. Had some difficulty obtaining clear running approaching and rounding the home turn. During the running of the race lost its near fore plate. HENNYBODYS Raced wide through the early stages before settling outside the leader. Performance queried. Rider J Childs reported the mare travelled well however failed to respond to his riding and may now have come to the end of its preparation. A post race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.
MASTERS DEGREE Approaching the 400m improved up onto the heels of Benefit and was steadied. Following this incident the gelding was held up and unable to obtain clear running until passing the 250m. NO FAIRY Near the 1300m was steadied to avoid the heels of Consiello when the pace slackened. Settled at the rear. Tactics queried. Rider K Walters stated from her wide barrier draw she elected to come back at the start in fear of being caught wide racing into the first turn from the 2000m start. K Walters explained the mare had reluctantly led at Horsham 18 December 2016 and in her opinion the mare is best ridden in a handy position with cover. Her comments were noted. BENEFIT Led. Tired. Rider D Holland reported the gelding was not suited to todays track conditions. Race 6 MACS HOTEL WOODFORD CUP - 1700 metres: LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY Slow to begin. Performance queried. Rider L Currie reported the gelding was not suited to todays soft track conditions and was better suited to races over a longer distance. REFULGENT Led. Surrendered the lead at the 1000m. Tactics queried. Rider B Rawiller reported whilst it was his intention to use his favourable barrier draw to his advantage, his mount settled closer than anticipated when racing keenly. LEICA DAY Slow to begin. Over raced in the early stages. Near the 1400m was steadied to avoid the heels of Proverb. CADILLAC MOUNTAIN Slow to begin. ARTIES SHORE Slow to begin. Had some difficulty obtaining clear running approaching and rounding the home turn. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. WOAKWINE Raced wide without cover in the early stages before striding forward to obtain the lead near the 1000m. PATCH ADAMS Over raced through the early stages. Rider J Hill was spoken to advisedly regarding his excessive use of the whip inside the final 100m and advised he must afford his mount the opportunity to respond. PROVERB Permission was granted for apprentice M Aitken to replace J Beriman as rider of the gelding when no suitable senior riders were available at the handicapped 54kgs. Race 7 SUNGOLD MILK BM70 HANDICAP - 1100 metres: LIMINAL Prior to the event connections confirmed the gelding that was having its first race start for trainer C Maher would be ridden forward. These tactics were consistent with how the
gelding had been ridden previously. Settled outside the leader. Performance queried. Rider C Caserta explained his mount travelled well however failed to respond to his riding and lay out when placed under pressure. A post race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. SUCH HOPE Slow to begin. SOVEREIGN DUKE Raced wide without cover from the 800m. MEXICAN MARACAS First start since April 2014. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to run. Slow to begin. ROYAL FANTASY Slow to begin. Rider J Hill was reminded of his obligations to fully ride his mounts through to the finish. UNIQUE STORM Rider N Beriman was spoken to advisedly regarding her use of the whip inside the final 100m and advised she must afford her mount the opportunity to respond. Race 8 DJBOWMANRACING.COM BM64 HANDICAP - 1400 metres: The start of the race was delayed when Powerossa (D Moor) had to be resaddled in the mounting yard when it was established the lead bag had inadvertently been left off the mare. At a subsequent inquiry trainer M Williams was fined $300 under the provisions of AR 140A for presenting the mare to the mounting enclosure without including the lead bag in its gear. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account the fact that Mr Williams had not been spoken to previously for a matter such as this and also that a member of his staff had alerted Stewards to the fact the lead bag was left in the mares stall. SPUNLAGO Raced wide without cover from the 800m. FLOREVER SPECIAL Slow to begin. Rider A Mallyon reported the gelding was not suited by todays track conditions.
