The four teams remaining comprise the top four teams in the Hoosier Heritage Conference standings. After posting their third straight 15- win season, the Dragons advanced to the championship weekend with a 53-32 Tuesday victory over Connersville, one punctuated by strong defense and big runs. Greenfield-Central will be playing its first sectional game after drawing a bye. Mt. Vernon, which also drew a bye, faces Pendleton Heights a 59-49 Tuesday winner over Richmond in the other semifinal. NP is seeking its fifth sectional title and first in 14 years. The Dragons advanced with an emphatic win Tuesday, one that was sparked by a 7-0 run to close the first half and give NP an 11-point lead, and keyed by 13-0 and 15-0 runs in the second half that put the game away. Haley Harrison hit five 3-pointers and tied her career high with 18 points. Three of those triples all came after Connersville had cut the lead to four. Leah Seib continued her recent strong play with 13 points. She had finished the regular season with backto-back 20-point games. Guard Megan Jolly had seven assists and seven rebounds, while forward Katie Herron had seven points and six boards. The Dragons had an outstanding 16 assists to just eight turnovers in the contest. The field The Dragons face a Greenfield- Central team Friday that is red hot, winning four straight. NP won the regular season meeting 42-31 behind Megan Jolly s 13 points. G-C is led by Hannah Farrell (14.4 ppg, 3.5 apg) and Katie Real (10.4 ppg). In Friday s other semifinal, Pendleton Heights is 16-8 after Tuesday s win. Lauren Landes (10.6 ppg) and Kailyn Graham (10.3 ppg) lead a balanced attack. Mt. Vernon is 10-12. Senior Sophie Williams (10.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg) keys a young Marauder squad. Winning mark New Palestine has clinched its third consecutive winning season, after going 17-7 and 16-7 the last two years. The last time NP had three straight winning seasons was 1998-99, when the Dragons had eight straight winning years. The last time NP had three straight 15-win seasons was 1991-94, when coach Allen Cooper s teams went 15-6, 19-3 and 18-2, led by current head coach Sarah Gizzi. HHC leaders Leah Seib finished the regular season atop the HHC in rebounding (6.8) and FT percentage (86.4). She was also fourth in scoring (14.3) and fifth in FG percentage (50.7). Tatum Biddle had a huge day with 12 rebounds and seven assists, while Leah Seib scored 16 points. The NP 500 The Dragons enter the weekend with 498 victories in the program s history. Two more victories would be 500. NP began girls basketball in 1974-75 one year before the IHSAA sanctioned its first tourney. NP is 498-377 alltime in those 44 seasons, playing under 14 coaches. Dragon double-doubles Leah Seib had the Dragons only double-double of the regular season Dec. 16 at Yorktown. She tallied 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the Dragons 41-40 victory. It was the first game for four players in double figures since Nov. 23, 2013, when Carly Hackler (17), Natalie Kehrt (12), Gia Nitschke (10) and Haley Stratman (10) scored in double figures in a win over Scecina. The Dragons duplicated the feat the next week, when Emily Newcomb (14), Emma Grable (13), Harrison (11) and Tatum Biddle (10) hit double figures in a Dec. 29 loss to Noblesville. Streaking The Dragons nine-game win streak was the longest in school history to start a season. It tied one from last year, when NP won nine straight from Nov. 19-Dec. 27, 2016, which was the team s longest streak since 1997-98, when the Dragons won nine straight to close out the regular season. The longest winning streak in school history is 11 games, set both in 1992-93 and 1989-90. Zero it out The Dragons posted a shutout quarter in the Dec. 2 victory over Delta. NP held the Eagles scoreless for the second quarter. It was part of a 27-point run in a 44-18 victory.

Meet Coach Gizzi Coach Sarah Gizzi is in her first year as the Dragons varsity coach, but she is a familiar face at NPHS. She was a standout player from 1990-94, where she became the school s career scoring leader with 1,172 points. She led the Dragons to two sectional titles and three conference titles during her four-year tenure as player for coach Allen Cooper, now Dragons athletic director. She played collegiately at LaSalle University in Philadelphia. After returning to New Palestine, she has coached with the Dragon program as a varsity assistant and as a middle school coach. Basketball is in her family her father Bruce Haynes was the Dragons varsity boys coach from 1990-95, and is currently a varsity assistant with the Dragons girls program. Her brother Noah Haynes spent a handful of seasons as the varsity boys coach at Brebeuf Jesuit. She lives in New Palestine with her husband Mike and their three children.
