Cougars (1-2) 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8 vs. Westfield Shamrocks (1-2) 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 Off to its best start in 21 years, the New Palestine boys basketball team has a special opener tonight as the Dragons take on Greenfield-Central. Tonight is Brody Strong night, as the Dragons honor Brody Stephens, a member of the New Palestine community and basketball family who inspired us all. Donations for the Brody Strong fund will be collected at the game. Fans are also encouraged to bring donations of Legos and prepackaged snacks for Riley Hospital for Children. The Dragons open HHC play and their home schedule after a successful start on the road. NP has victories over Richmond, Shenandoah and Rushville to start the season 3-0. In both of last weekend s games, the Dragons used big mid-game runs to seize control. NP started the second half Friday with an 11-0 run in a 55-41 victory over 2A No. 6 Shenandoah, the team s first win over a ranked opponent since 2014. Junior Matthew True scored 21 points and grabbed four rebounds. Sophomore guard Maximus Gizzi had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Dylan Romine added five boards and sophomore forward Dawson Eastes scored seven points. In Saturday s game at Rushville, NP took over with a 20-0 run that bridged halftime and put the Dragons up double digits in a 52-42 victory. Gizzi scored 18 points, hitting 9-of- 11 from the line, and added seven rebounds and six assists. True tallied 14, scoring nine of the Dragons first 12 points and draining four 3-pointers. He also had six boards. Romine had nine points. #BrodyStrong Weekend foes Greenfield-Central is 1-2 under firstyear head coach Luke Haworth. The Cougars won their first game Saturday, beating Perry Meridian 49-40, before dropping a 44-42 game Tuesday to Westfield. Will O Connor leads the Cougars with a 16.5 ppg average. Westfield s win over G-C was its first of the year in three contests. Junior Zach Banks leads the Shamrocks, scoring 17.7 ppg. Junior Caleb Welch tallies 10.3 ppg for coach Shane Sumpter s club. The Dragons and Shamrocks are prone to close games three of the last five meetings have gone to OT. Looking ahead The Dragons head to the road next weekend. Friday, the Dragons travel to HHC foe New Castle, which has started the season 3-0. On Saturday, NP travels west to face longtime foe Franklin Central. The next home game is Friday, Jan. 5, as the Dragons play seven of their first nine on the road. Going to the fair The Dragons will face Mooresville at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. The NPHS girls basketball team will face Triton Central at 2:20 p.m. that day. Pre-sale tickets are $10 and are on sale at Friday s game or in the NPHS athletic office. HHC leaders The Dragons have several players among the HHC leaders. Maximus Gizzi leads the conference in assists (5.0) and is seventh in the conference in scoring (16.3). He is also 10 th in rebounds (5.7) and fifth in free throw percentage (.839). Guard Maximus Gizzi s family has been a part of New Palestine basketball for multiple generations. His mother, Sarah (Haynes) Gizzi is the Dragons girls varsity basketball coach. She was an Indiana All-Star in 1994 and is one of two players in NPHS boys and girls basketball history to be so honored. His grandfather, Bruce Haynes, was the Dragons head boys coach from 1990-95, and is currently a girls varsity assistant. His cousins Solomon and Samson Haynes were multi-year starters for the Dragons. Meanwhile, assistant coach Jeremy Large s twin sons Ryker and Kade are members of the Dragons roster.

Located in Hancock County in the southeast suburbs of Indianapolis, New Palestine has received many awards for academic excellence including a U.S. News and World Report Best Buy High School and many A and Four-Star ratings from the Indiana Department of Education.
