We are excited to reminisce over the last 100 years of Warren County Extension and we hope you will join us in the fun for all ages! We are also seeking any memorabilia to be displayed during the celebration! If you have any you would be willing to loan us please call the office! Have you ever thought about trying a different method? Join us on Wednesday, June 14th at the extension office from 6:30 to 7:30 pm for a short class from Mary Krisco, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Nutritionist. Mary will introduce you to home food preservation methods including canning, dehydrating and freezing. You will receive research-based food preservation resources and publications while also getting a chance to see various food preservation supplies and equipment. There is no cost to attend. Do you have questions about other native plant species? Join us on Thursday, June 29th from 6:00-7:30 pm at the Warren County Extension Office to learn about wildflowers and other native plants to our area, how to grow and maintain them, while also having the opportunity to ask tree specific questions. Our presenter for the evening will be Leslie Berckes, Program Manager & Field Coordinator for Trees Forever. There is no cost to attend and light refreshments will be provided. RSVP to Cortney at 515-961-6237. Want to be a Master Gardener? Registration for the upcoming Master Gardener class scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 19th has opened! The classes are held on Tuesday evenings and run from September 19th - December 5th. This year s class will be in a new format with more hands-on learning opportunities. All you have to do is participate in a Presentation, Working Exhibit and/or Share-The-Fun at the Warren County level and you could have the chance to win one. Presentations, Working Exhibits and Share-The-Fun are three great opportunities for 4-H ers to improve their speaking skills and practice being comfortable in front of an audience. We want 4-Hers to try out these great projects so we are doing a Communications Challenge to encourage 4-Hers and clubs to get involved. Win a Pizza Party! There are three pizza parties up for grabs one for Presentations, Working Exhibits and Share-The-Fun. Each one will win 5 coupons, each good for one large pizza from Casey s. Thanks to Casey s for their generous donation! The club winner from each category will be the club with the highest percentage of 4-Hers participating in that communications area. The number of 4-Hers in your club will be based on your registration enrollment. Winners will be announced at 4-H Family Night at the Warren County Fair on Sunday, July 30th. UPCOMING 4-H WORKSHOPS AND CAMPS Summer Day Camps The Warren County Extension Office is excited to provide a variety of Day Camps to all youth in Warren County this summer. From Tango with Technology to World Wide Adventures there is sure to be multiple camps youth will have an interest in. Camps will be held at the Warren County Extension Office and most are free or have a very minimal fee. Space is limited for some camps so be sure to register early. Mission Airdrop: Wednesday, June 7th 3rd-5th grade BBQ School: Monday, June 26th 28th 4th -12th grade Worldwide Adventures: Thursday, June 29th 4th - 8th grade Tango with Technology: Friday, July 7th K 8th grade Yarn It: Tuesday, July 11th K-8th grade Exploring Invasive Species: Thursday, July 13th 3rd - 5th grade Cops and Bobbers: TBD Pullorum Typhoid Testing All Poultry Iowa Poultry Exhibition requires Pullorum-Typhoid (PT) testing for the Warren County Fair. All poultry exhibited must come from a U.S. Pullorum-Typhoid clean or equivalent flock or have a negative PT test within 90 days of public exhibition and the test must have been performed by an authorized tester. Poultry purchased from a hatchery and raised for exhibition are NOT exempt from PT testing requirements. PT testing is available on Sunday, July 9th from 10 am to 2 pm at the Warren County Fairgrounds in the poultry barn. The cost is 50 cents per bird. This includes all poultry egg-type and meat type chickens, turkeys, domestic Camera Corps We would like to invite youth to patriciate in Camera Corps at the state level. Camera Corps is an opportunity to creatively explore something that may be new to you while having fun using photography and social media. Camera Corps is a talented group of selected young photographers working together Livestock and Horticulture State Fair entries are open from June 1st July 1st in 4-H online. All payments will be collected by the Extension Office with a check payable to the Iowa State Fair (no cash please). Please remember, the May 15th deadline only nominated your livestock for the Iowa State Fair, this DOES NOT mean they are signed up to attend. Specific details can be found at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/ to capture beautiful, powerful and unique photographs of communities from across the state of Iowa. Each month, a photography topic/theme is provided with different subject matters as the primary focus. Youth from all counties are welcome to join! Exhibiting at the Iowa State Fair? statefair/livestock. This website also includes your premium book, additional drug affidavits, and additional Exhibitor ticket order and parking permit form. Please note, additional ticket and vehicle permit form must be postmarked before Thursday, July 20th. Let s get some Warren County 4-Hers showcasing their passion for the state of Iowa and photography! County Extension Office by Thursday, August 4th. Exhibitors who are selected to take food to the state fair need to contact the Warren County Extension Office at 515-961-6237. A picture will be taken in the 4-H Exhibit Building on Saturday, July 29th at 5 pm of all 4-Hers with exhibits selected for the Iowa State Fair and those selected for the Creative Arts Tour. Drug Affidavit As young livestock producers, you have an obligation to be a responsible producer. We want you to understand that all animals will enter the food chain and because edible food products for the consuming public and it is your responsibly to ensure you are proving a healthy and safe product. To help show that 4-Her are responsible producers, drug affidavits are required for certain species: beef, horse, meat goat, sheet and swine. These forms are available online at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/ livestock-id. They are also available at the Extension Office or can be picked up during Fair Entry Week. These forms will be collected during County Fair check-in. Remember, this form is front and back so be sure to review and complete both sides. If no medications were given, you are still required to list your animals identification number (s) and both exhibitor and parent must sign the form. Clover Kids Pre Fair Workshop Are you a new Clover Kid family wondering about the Warren County Fair and what s available to you? Maybe you re a returning family who would appreciate a refresher? The Warren County Clover Kid leaders are hosting a Clover Kids Pre Fair Workshop on Wednesday, June 28th from 6-7 pm in the Multi-Purpose room at the Indianola Middle School. Clover Kids will get the opportunity to prep for fair judging and create an exhibit. Clover Kids are asked to bring a stuffed pet that evening. We also plan to have an informal parent meeting during this time for any parents wishing to gather more information about fair or to simply have their questions answered. AKSARBEN AKSARBEN is a 4-H livestock exposition open to ten states. This event along with other livestock opportunities is held in Grand Island, Nebraska at the State Fair Grounds September 28th through October 1st. If you are interested in participating, take a looks at the identification requirements and deadlines. Please note, retinal imaging or pulling DNA only nominates your animal for this event, this does not mean they are registered to attend. June 15th all market swine, market lamb, meat goat and feeder calf DNA due to the Extension Office. Envelopes are available at the Extension Office. All breeding heifer, dairy cattle and horse nomination forms are due to the AKSARBEN office by June 20th. The premium book, forms, other livestock contests and additional information can be located on the AKSARBEN websitewww.aksarbenstockshow.com under Exhibitors. LEADER INFORMATION Don t forget club attendance reports are due to the Extension Office before 4:30 pm on Thursday, June 15th. Please be sure to get this information turned in on time, this helps alleviate any 4-H families frustrations during Fair Entry Week. WARREN COUNTY FAIRBOOKS Fairbooks are available to purchase for $2.00 at Bishop Insurance Agency or online at www.warrencofair.com/fairbook.html Please be sure to read through your fairbook thoroughly! FARM BUREAU STAND Sign-Up is now open for clubs to sign-up for the Farm Bureau Stand. Call Tosha Brooks now at 515-962-2251 to grab your favorite four-hour shift, before it is taken. Silent Auction Basket We hope everyone will join in the 2017 Silent Auction Fundraiser to help fund 4-H trips for next year. Clubs can use this fair theme Red, White and Blue: This Fair s for You! or creative your own 4-H theme. This years silent auction will begin Saturday, July 22nd in the 4-H Exhibit Building and will continue throughout the week until 4 pm on Sunday, July 30th. Winners will be announced at 4-H Family Night, Sunday, July 30th at 7 pm. The highest bidder receives the basket. We hope to have a basket represented from each club! Youth club s name will appear with the basket so you can encourage friends and family to bid on your item. Basket s are due Thursday, July 20th during booth decorating. Please be sure to include the overall value of your clubs basket. Join the fun and help us raise money to provide financial assistance for upcoming 4-H trips! Who knows, this could benefit you and your friends next year.
