Head Coach Bob Deraney Bob Deraney enters his 11th season as head coach of the women s ice hockey program at Providence College. In his 10 seasons at Providence, Deraney has continued the level of excellence that the hockey program has come to expect over the last 35 seasons. In 2008-09, Deraney led PC to a 17-16-3 record, besting the 16 win total of the previous two seasons. The Friars reached the Hockey East Tournament for the seventh-consecutive season and defeated Connecticut, 3-0, at Schneider Arena in the first-ever Hockey East quarterfinal game. PC traveled to Durham, N.H., but fell to eventual champion UNH, 3-1, in the semifinals. Providence joined New Hampshire as the only two programs to reach the post season in all seven years of Hockey East play. The post-season trip was the Friars 26th straight as a program. After the 17 wins in 2008-09, Deraney finds himself just 10 wins shy of joining former coach John Marchetti as the only coaches to reach 200 wins on the Friar bench. The Friar program will look to celebrate its 600th victory as it stands at 593 coming into the season. The Friars finished the 2007-08 season with a 16-16-4 record and advanced to post-season play for the 25th straight season. Deraney helped the Friars upset No. 10 Connecticut on their way to making their fifth Hockey East title game appearance in the last six seasons. In 2004-05, Deraney led the Friars to their 10th tournament title and their fourth in a row, including the ECAC Eastern title in 2002. En route to capturing the 2005 Hockey East Tournament crown, the Friars defeated Boston College and ninth-ranked Connecticut. The Friars earned an automatic bid and made their first NCAA appearance against No. 1 Minnesota. The Friars also posted their 14th 20-win season, the fifth in Deraney s seven-year tenure. The Friars finished with a 21-11-5 record. During the 2003-04 season, Deraney led the Friars to their 500th victory after defeating Boston College, 5-2, on February 22, 2004. The Friars defeated UNH, 3-0, earning their third-straight Hockey East Championship as well as an ECAC Championship. The 2002-03 season saw the Friars finish with the best record in the program s history, 24-6-6, and as the Inaugural Hockey East Regular Season and Tournament Champions. In 2001-02, Deraney led the Friars to their seventh ECAC Tournament title and their first since 1995. The Friars defeated second-ranked Niagara and fifth-ranked Northeastern to capture the 2002 ECAC Eastern League crown. Providence also posted its 11th 20-win season finishing 20-13-4. In his first season, 1999-2000, Deraney led the Friars to their 10th 20-win season with a 20-10-3 mark. Deraney s first season saw many high points, including an eight-game unbeaten streak, a road victory over No. 1-ranked Harvard and a shutout win over eventual national champion, the University of Minnesota. The Friars reached the ECAC playoffs for the 17th consecutive year. The squad traveled to Dartmouth for the ECAC quarterfinals, and after 85 minutes of scoreless play, the Friars season came to an end, as they fell to the Big Green, 1-0 in double overtime. Deraney, who graduated from Boston University in 1987, has extensive experience in college hockey. As a goaltender he had an opportuity to play for some of head coach Jack Parker s greatest teams at Boston University. In 1984-85, Deraney was named Most Improved Player on the Terrier squad. During that season, he helped the team to a 24-14-4 record and a second-place finish in Hockey East. The following year, 1985-86, was the most successful during his time at BU. The Terriers captured the Beanpot and Hockey East titles with a 25-14-4 record, as they earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament, making it to the fourth round. In 1989, Deraney served as an assistant/goalie coach at Northeastern University. After one season at Northeastern, Deraney joined the staff at Dartmouth College. He spent three seasons at Dartmouth as the recruiting coordinator and working with the team s forwards, defensemen and goaltenders. During that period, the program experienced a significant turnaround, going from the 45th-ranked team in the country in 1990 to No. 29 in 1993. During his first season at Dartmouth, Deraney was an assistant under Ben Smith, the former head coach of the U.S. Women s National Team. He went on to become the top assistant coach at UMass-Amherst from 1993-98. His responsibilities at UMass included working with the defense and goaltenders, recruiting and acting as the program s university liaison. Deraney was instrumental in helping rebuild the hockey program at UMass which was re-instituted in 1993. In addition to his coaching duties at the collegiate level, Deraney has coached at various levels with USA Hockey. In 2008, he was on the coaching staff for the U-18 Women s National Team that won the gold medal at the inaugural IIHF World Women s U-18 Championships. He joined with sophomores Ashley Cottrell and Kate Bacon to defeat Canada, 5-2. Deraney helped select the 1998 Men s USA Select Team, which competed at the IIHF Pool-A World Championship Qualification Tournament in Austria. Deraney also worked closely with the 1996 Men s U.S. World Junior National Team and has been involved with all levels of national player development since 1989 for both men and women. October 24, 1999 - The Friars defeated eventual National Champion Minnesota, 1-0, at Schneider Arena as Bob Deraney earned his first victory as a head coach. November 28, 1999 -January 16, 2000 - Deraney s squad had an eight-game unbeaten streak that began on November 28 with a 6-0 win over Maine. January 8-9, 2000 - In a weekend series versus ECAC powers Harvard and Brown, the Friars skated away with 1-1 and 0-0 ties, respectively. February 6, 2000 - PC knocked off top-ranked Harvard, 1-0, at the Bright Hockey Center. It was the first time that any Providence College team defeated a No. 1 ranked opponent since the men s hockey team defeated Boston University in the 1996 Hockey East Semifinals. March 4, 2000 - The Friars earned their 20th win of the season with a 5-4 victory at Dartmouth. Jess Tabb netted a hat trick as the squad posted their 10th 20-win season in 26 years. March 10, 2001 - The Friars made their 18th consecutive trip to the ECAC Tournament. Harvard, which eventually advanced to the Frozen Four, defeated PC, 4-3, in overtime. March 15, 2002 - The Friars defeated second-ranked Niagara, 3-2, in double overtime in the semifinals of the ECAC Eastern League Tournament. Danielle Culgin scored 1:06 into the second overtime for the win. March 16, 2002 - Providence defeated Northeastern, 1-0, to capture the school s seventh ECAC Tournament title. Sophomore Mara Amrhein scored her first collegiate goal, and the first goal in Women s Hockey East play. February 23, 2003 - Providence claimed the inaugural Women s Hockey East regular season title by defeating Maine, 2-1. February 28, 2003 - The Friars defeated Niagara, 3-2, in overtime to earn their 24th victory of the season, the most ever in team history. March 16, 2003 - Providence defeated New Hampshire, 1-0, in the women s Hockey East Tournament Championship. The lone goal was scored by sophomore Hilary Greaves in the second period. March 25, 2003 - The Friars ended the season ranked fifth in the nation in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Poll, marking the program s highest finish. February 22, 2004 - The Friars defeated Boston College, 5-2, to earn their 500th victory, becoming only the second Division I women s hockey team to reach that plateau. March 10, 2004 - Deraney becomes the second coach in the program s history to win 100 career games at Providence as the Friars defeated Boston College, 6-1. March 21, 2004 - Providence defeated New Hampshire, 3-0, in the Women s Hockey East Tournament final for the second straight year. Senior Kelli Halcisak scored the game-winning goal in the third period to earn the Friars third consecutive league title. March 13, 2005 - Providence defeated Connecticut, 3-1, in the Women s Hockey East Tournament final to capture its fourth straight league title, including ECAC Eastern in 2002. March 18, 2005 - Providence advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time i n program history. Junior Katelynn Laffin recorded the game s first goal in PC s 6-1 loss versus No. 1 Minnesota. November 26, 2005 - Providence captured the 11th annual Mayor s Cup as they defeated Brown University 5-3, on Saturday, November 26 at Schneider Arena in Providence. November 24, 2007 - Providence captured the 13th annual Mayor s Cup as they defeated Brown University 5-2, at Schneider Arena in Providence. March 8, 2008 - Providence upsets No. 10 Connecticut, 5-1, to earn a place in the Hockey East Championship game for the fifth time in the last six seasons. November 29, 2008 - The Friars defeated Brown, 1-0, in the 14th annual Mayor s Cup maintaining possession of the trophy in consecutive seasons for the first time.
Coaching Staff Assistant Coac h Meredith Roth Meredith Roth enters her fourth season as an assistant coach of the women s ice hockey program. She helped the Friars to their seventh consecutive Hockey East Tournament in 2009. In the absence of Coach Deraney due to his national team committments, Roth led the Friars to a 7-3 upset of No. 4 Mercyhurst during the 2008 season. Her duties include recruiting coordinator, coaching the defensemen, on and off ice instruction, player development and all other functions of the program. A 2004 graduate of Providence College with a B.A. in social sciences, Roth was a four-year member of the women s ice hockey team, playing defense all four years. As a Friar, Roth was named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team (2004), United States Women s National Hockey Team (2003), U.S. Under-22 National Hockey Team (2003), ECAC Eastern Hockey League All- Tournament Team (2002), and was awarded the 2001 Providence College Women s Hockey Unsung Hero Award. In addition, Roth was a co-captain her senior year and an assistant captain during her junior season as well. She helped lead PC to the 2002 ECAC Championship as well as the 2003 and 2004 Hockey East titles. Prior to returning to Providence, Roth worked as the head coach for the girls under-16 ice hockey team at Shattuck-St. Mary s School in Faribault, Minnesota. She coached the team for two seasons (2005 and 2006). In the summer, she works camps and clinics including Bob Deraney Hockey School, Rinksport, Shattuck-St. Mary s Girls Hockey School and has worked the USA Hockey U-17 Development camp in 2007 and 2009. Coach Roth is the daughter of James and Jacquelyn Roth. She has four brothers and one sister; Benjamin, Emilie, Nicholas, Timothy and Theodore. She also has four nieces; Lilly, Maria, Eleanore and Julia, and one nephew, James. Assistant Coach Bob Bellemore One of the top goaltenders to ever play at Providence College, Bob Bellemore is entering his 18th season as an assistant coach with the women s hockey team. In addition to working with the goaltenders, he assists with scouting and various other duties. He is also involved with the USA hockey elite training camps that take place in Lake Placid, N.Y. Coach Bellemore helps lead the goaltending segment of the camp. As a sophomore in 1964, he helped the Friars win their first ECAC title and earn their first berth in the NCAA Final Four. Bellemore also starred on the school s baseball team and served as the team s captain his senior year. In 1984, he was inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame. Bellemore began coaching as a part-time assistant for PC s men s hockey team. In 1972, he joined head coach Lou Lamoriello s staff as a full-time assistant - a position he held until 1986. In 1986-87, Bellemore held the title of Arena Director and was in charge of the day-to-day operations of Schneider Arena. Bellemore left Providence College in 1987 to serve as the goaltender coach for the New Jersey Devils. In 1991, he left New Jersey to pursue his master s degree at PC. He earned his master s degree in special education and was employed as a special education instructor at South Kingstown High School. He is now retired from his duties as a guidance counselor at South Kingstown High. A native of Smithfield, R.I., Bellemore resides in Westerly, R.I., with his wife Marguerite. He has one son, Bruce, a 1991 graduate of PC, who played hockey for two seasons for the Friars. He also is the proud grandfather of nine. Bruce and his wife Eileen, who also graduated from Providence, have triplets, Brendan, Jolie and Laurel and the grandchildren from Marguerite s children include Zachary, Devon, Sofia, Christopher, Alec, and Luke. Assistant Coac h Erin Normore Erin Normore enters her first season as a graduate assistant coach for Providence. As a graduate assistant, Normore is working towards a master s degree in guidance and counseling. Among other duties, Erin works extensively as a video coordinator for the Friars. Normore joins the staff a year after leading the Friars as an assistant captain in 2008-09. She led the team in assists for the second-consecutive season, finishing 2009 with 17. Normore finished her career atop the all-time games played list with 143 appearances, having played in every game during her stellar fouryear career. Normore broken the 20-point plateau all four seasons and finished her career with 91 points on 66 assists and 25 goals. Normore brings international experience to the Friar coaching staff. She was a member of the 2007 U-22 Camp for Team Canada. Goaltenders: Christina England, Jr. ** GENEVIEVE LACASSE, So. * PLAYERS IN CAPS PLAYED DURING 2008-09 SEASON * Designates seasons played at Providence Following a loss in the Hockey East Semifinals, the Providence College women s hockey program is hungry and ready to compete for a fourth Hockey East title. While PC lost six talented seniors to graduation, the foundation of a successful team is still intact and ready for the extreme competition that Hockey East has to offer. Led by the reigning Goaltending Champion and Rookie of the Year in Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ont.), the Friars will look to be at the top of the defensive ranks for another season. Last season, PC was able to boost its overall record to 17-16-3 after finishing the previous two seasons at 16-16-4. Providence posted a 12-8-1 record in conference play, earning the third seed in the conference tournament, and faced off against Connecticut at the friendly confines of Schneider Arena in the Hockey East quarterfinals. The Friars came away with a 3-0 victory but fell to eventual champion New Hampshire in the semifinals, 3-1. While losing quality seniors is a constant issue for the Friars, Coach Deraney feels that Providence will be primed and ready for another run at the Hockey East title. With the growth of women s hockey and the opportunities that young players have before college, it s not too much to expect freshmen to come in and make an immediate impact, not only on our program, but on the landscape of college hockey. We ve seen it over the years but never more so than from our freshmen last year. We have the same type of expectations for this year s freshmen class as well. The FORWARDS: Returning 9; Lost 3; Newcomers; 3 The front lines of the Friar attack will need to replace more than just the 36 points produced by the graduating forwards, Steph Morris (3), Mari Pehkonen (17) and Katy Beach (16). The graduating forwards were able to provide consistent leadership both on and off the ice. The Friars will certainly look to juniors Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.), Jean O Neill (Strafford, Pa.) 6-2009-10 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE WOMEN S HOCKEY and the highly effective sophomore class to fill the gap left by the class of 2009. Ruff finished her second season at PC with an even 20 points on 10 goals and 10 assists. She has established herself as a leader on the team and finished the year tied for the team lead with four game-winning goals. O Neill played in 33 games as a sophomore and put home five goals and three assists. She shined against conference opponents, scoring seven of her eight points in Hockey East action. Led by a pair of crafty forwards, Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) and Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.), the sophomore class has much to live up to after leading the team in goals (36), assists (48) and points (84) as freshmen. Veharanta came in and made an immediate impact, leading the team in goals (16), points (31), gamewinning goals (4), power-play goals (8) and power-play points (15). She led all Hockey East freshmen with 31 points and was the only unanimous selection to the All- Rookie Team. Veharanta joined with Cottrell to create a potent first line throughout the season. Cottrell finished the year with 21 points on five goals and 16 assists. Filling out the front lines will be seniors Jackie Duncan (Kitchener, Ont.), Pamela McDevitt (South Boston, Mass.), Arianna Rigano (Malden, Mass.) and sophomores Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) and Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.). Duncan will hope to improve on an injury plagued junior campaign in which she managed six points while McDevitt and Rigano will be relied upon for their energy and two-way play throughout the season. Bacon, consistently one of the fastest players on the ice, was a staple of the power play and penalty kill units and will surely look to improve her marks of eight goals and four assists as a freshman. Gauthier, voted the team s Seventh Player in 2009, came on strong as the year progressed, becoming one of the team s most effective forwards down the stretch. She scored three goals and added seven assists to finish in double digits with 10 points.

Jessica Vella, Fr. * Two seasons played at St. Anselm College Joining Providence in 2009 will be a class of three talented forwards who should step into the action and make an immediate impact. Nicole Anderson, a 6-0 forward from Jordan, Minn., comes to Providence after scoring over 100 goals for Shakopee High. Anderson will be looked upon to provide a power game in front of the net. Also looking for time on the front lines will be an Anchorage, Alaska native, Jessica Cohen. Cohen joins PC after competing at national power house Shattuck St. Mary s where she helped her team to another National Title in 2009. In 48 games for SSM, she finished as the team s second leading scorer with 97 points on 35 goals and 62 assists. Finalizing the incoming forwards is Jessica Vella. Vella, a Pickering, Ontario native, finished up a successful campaign with the Durham Junior Lightning of the Provincial Women s Hockey League in Canada, scoring 47 points on 26 goals and 21 assists in 45 games. With the team losing 39 percent of the scoring from the graduating seniors, the junior and senior classes will need to improve on their combined 28 percent of the scoring from last season. If the Friars can find consistent scoring from the upperclassmen to go along with the prolific sophomore class, PC should be one of the top scoring teams in Hockey East. The DEFENSE: Returning 7; Lost 2; Newcomers; 1 With five returning defenders, the Friars will look to be one of the top defensive teams in 2009. Last season, PC finished with the third-best team defense after allowing just 1.90 goals per game while performing at an 86.5% rate on the penalty kill in Hockey East play. The six returning defenders will be forced to step up and fill the large shoes left by the departure of captain Brittany Simpson (Barrie, Ont.) and assistant captain Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ont.). Normore finished her senior campaign with 26 points on nine goals and 17 assists while Simpson added two goals and 12 assists for 14 points. Both players were leaders of both the penalty kill and power play, contributing a combined 24 points with the man-advantage. PC will certainly expect big things from an experienced back line led by senior Colleen Martin (Woburn, Mass.) and juniors Amber Yung (Rockville, Va.) and Leigh Riley (Lexington, Mass.). Martin enters her senior year after earning a career-high seven assists in 2008-09. She will certainly be a key cog on the penalty kill. Yung, a member of the Team USA U-22 squad, added six assists as a sophomore and should step into a prominent role on the power play in 2009. Riley added three assists as a sophomore and will be looked upon to help solidify the penalty kill. The final returning players on the defensive unit are sophomores Jennifer Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.), Christie Jensen (Delta, B.C.) and Breanna Schwarz (Portland, Ore.). Friedman, one of the hardest shooters on the team, found a steady spot at the point on PC power plays during her freshman campaign. She will look to build on her four goals and four assists last season. The prototypical hustle player, Jensen will look to impact the game with a defensive intensity few players can match. Schwarz was named the Most Improved Player by her teammates and will look to find a spot on the blue line in 2009. Coach Deraney added depth to the back line with the signing of Emily Groth (Monona, Wisc.). 2009-2010 Outlook Goaltender (Career Stats) Christina England, Jr. (DNP as a sophomore) Genevieve Lacasse, So. (29 GP, 1.94GAA,.933SV%) The GOALIES: Returning 2; Lost 2; Newcomers; 0 The 2008-09 season was highlighted by an incredible freshman campaign from newcomer Genevieve Lacasse. Lacasse split time with graduating goalie Danielle Ciarletta early in the season before taking full control between the pipes midway through the year. Lacasse finished the season with a 15-11-1 mark overall with a 1.90 GAA and an impressive.933 save percentage. She was even more impressive in conference action, boasting an 11-5-0 record based on a 1.55 goals against average and a.940 save percentage. After a summer of training with Canada s National Under-22 Camp, Lacasse will look to carry over her remarkable freshman campaign into her sophomore season. Waiting behind Lacasse is junior Christina England (Wareham, Mass.). England will be ready to step in and patrol the crease if her number gets called. 2009-10 Hockey East Preseason Coaches Poll Rk. Coach Deraney, with 190 victories to his name, is only 10 wins shy of 200 in his career. With the 3-1 loss at UNH in the Hockey East Semifinals still fresh in their minds, the Friars will certainly be looking to make a statement in 2009. While the loss of six talented seniors will be tough to replace, PC has the necessary ingredients for a championship run come March. Providence captured the first three Hockey East championships and with the skill of the returning players and incoming freshmen, Coach Deraney expects nothing less than a fourth at the end of the season.
