Pitch markings: Side-boards The long perimeter boards of the pitch Back-lines The shorter perimeter of the pitch Goal-lines The backline between the goal posts Centre-line Line across the middle of the pitch Stroke spot Spot in front of the centre of each goal at 7m from the goal-line. Circles in front of the goal at 9m from the goal posts and goal-line Lines are part of the pitch and the circle The goals are positioned outside the pitch (not on, but behind the goal-line).
2 teams Each team consists of players and supporting staff: Field player Goalkeeper or player with goalkeeping privileges Staff (Team Manager, Coach, Kiné etc) Maximum 6 players on the pitch (including goalkeeper or player with goalkeeping privileges) A team consists of max 12 players
One player of each team must be appointed as captain. The captain is responsible for the behaviour off all players of their team (and the staff) Players must wear uniform clothing Players must not wear anything which is dangerous to other players or to themselvers (watches, (ear)rings, caps..) Players must wear shin and mouth protection
Gloves are permitted for protection which do not increase the natural size of the hands significantly Players are not permitted to wear face masks except when defending a penalty corner and in case of medical reasons When playing against a team with similar colors the home team changes color (shirt and socks).
Goalkeeper or players with goalkeeping privileges: wears distinctive clothing Goalkeeper: complete gear! (minimum: headgear, leg guards, kickers) Player with goalkeeping priviliges: may wear protective headgear when inside their half and must wear protective headgear when defending PC or stroke. The goalkeeper or player with goalkeeping priviliges is the only player who can play the ball with his body inside the circle only.
There is never a situation of dangerous play towards the keeper WITH THE BALL. (with the stick for instance ALWAYS dangerous play) When outside the circle = player, so only playing with the stick (max till the centre line). If the keeper lies on the ball penalty corner If the keeper lies intentionally on the ball penalty stroke
Players may be substituted at any time during the game except during a PC. No limit on the number of players being substituted at the same time. Substitutions are not permitted for suspended players. After completing a suspension, a player is permitted to be substituted without first returning to the pitch. Players must leave or enter the pitch for substitution within 3 metres of the centre-line.
OUTDOOR: the time is stopped for substitution of goalkeeper The time is not stopped for substitution of a keeper in indoor including if the substitution is due to injury of the keeper or suspension of the keeper. The substitution of a goalkeeper by a player with goalkeeping privileges or by a normal player is limited to a total of 2 per match. Substitutions between goalkeepers wearing full protective equipment do not count for this limitation.
The umpire is only human. The umpire can make or break the game; do not over whistle the game! Whistle with fair play as ultimate purpose: judging honestly and fair. Be consequent: players will know what to expect Be concentrated Be approachable and open (= explain your decision if not clear to the players) but do not enter into discussions on the pitch. For personal penalties: clearly show the card(s).
Use a loud and clear whistle blow Use accents in the power and length of the blow to indicate seriousness of the offence. If the ball hits an umpire or any other loose object on the pitch the play goes on! Stop the time for e.g dogs or bottles on the pitch.
There are 2 umpires (= one team, the 3rd on the pitch) Move! Make sure you always have the best (over)view on the game Umpires wear distictive color clothing from both teams
Each umpire has primary responsibility for decisions in one half of the pitch for the duration of the match. In practice this half follows a diagonal line. The position of the umpire: with the sideline in his back, the umpire has the centre line at his left side Each umpire is responsible for decisions in the circle of his half of the pitch only The umpire should show and advice his colleague only if he is being asked for it (eye contact!)
Verbal misconduct of a player: insulting other players or the umpire Don t whistle but make a calming down movement ( sssstt ) In case of persistance let the player come to the umpire and give a warning green card In case of misconduct of a group of players the captain can receive the warning or the sanction In case of extreme misconduct a red card can be given
Start and end each half of the match Start a bully Enforce a penalty Start and end a penalty stroke Indicate a goal Re-start the match after a goal has been scored Stop the match and re-start it for time-out Stop the match for any other reason and to restart it Indicate where necessary that the ball has passed wholly outside the pitch
A match consists of two periods of 20 minutes and a half-time interval of 5 minutes. A time-out of maximum 1 minute may be called once to each team in each half of the match Time-out cannot be called within the period from the award of a penalty corner or penalty stroke until after it has been completed
A coin is tossed between the 2 teams. The winner decides to choose for either the direction of play or to start the match with the centre pass. Direction of play and centre pass is inversed with the 2nd half of the match A centre pass is taken: To start the match After half time After a goal
Taking a centre pass: Taken at the centre of the pitch It is permitted to play the ball in any direction. All players other than the player taking the centre pass must be on their half of the pitch The procedure for raking a free push applies (self-pass etc...)
Centre pass after scoring a goal. A bully takes place to re-start a match when time or paly has been stopped for an injury or any other reason and no penalty has been awarded. Close to the location of the ball when play was stopped but not within 9M of the back-line and not within 3m of the circle 2 players facing each other with their goal on the right (1) start with their sticks on the ground right to the ball (2) tap the flat faces of their stick once just above the ball (3) play the ball All other players at 3m
NEW RULE!!! LONG CORNER IN INDOOR The ball is out of play when it passes completely over the side-board or back-line. Over the side board play is re-started Over the back-line by an attacker: free hit for the defense up to 9.1m from and in line with where it crossed the back line. Over the back-line by a defender: Unintentionally by the defender / deflected by the keeper: long corner (on the centre line) Intentionally by the defender or by the keeper (except deflection by the keeper) penalty corner (PC)
ONLY FOR INDOOR Field players must not stop, kick, propel, pick up, throw or carry the ball with any part of their body Players must not play the ball with the back of the stick Players must not hit the ball Field players must not play the while lying on the pitch or with knee, arm or hand on the pitch other than the one holding the stick Players must not raise the ball off the pitch except for a shot at goal (10cm unintentionally is ok)
ONLY FOR INDOOR Players must not play the ball dangerously: no forcing (playing the ball deliberately and hard into opponent s stick, feet or hand) Players must not trap or hold the ball against the side-boards Players must not obstruct an opponent who is attempting to play the ball With any part of his body With his stick 3rd party or shadow obstruction
Players must not touch, handle or interfere with other players or their sticks or clothing Players must not tackle unless in a position to play the ball without any body contact Players must not delay the play to gain benefit by time-wasting
Not allowed to raise the ball in the air except Unintentionally not higher than 10cm and does not create advantage for the player who raised the ball For a shot at goal (not dangerous) Not allowed to play the ball in the air except For a defender or keeper attempting to stop or deflect a shot at goal (hitting is not permitted) For any player to stop a rebound (from keeper or goal post) from legitimate shot at goal
Interfering an opponent. Eg: pushing, backing into opponent, tackle, run from behind (dangerous play) A sliding/tackle where opponent is pulled down dangerous play; free hit + yellow card Intentional offence = green card / yellow card / red card depending on the circumstances

Ball must be stationary and close to where the offence occured (no significant advantage) The ball is moved using push or self-pass Opponents must always be at least 3m from the ball If the opponent is within 3m and does not interfere, play or attempt to play the ball, the free push need not to be delayed In case of intentional position within 3m by a defender penalty corner All players must be at least 3m from the ball when a free push is awarded to the attack within the half of the pitch they are attacking

Ball placed on the back-line 6m from the goalpost (any side) Injector must have at least 1 foot outside the pitch. Other players should not: Have stick, hand or foor inside the circle. Above the circle is allowed. No hands on the goal posts Goalkeeper inside the goal Defenders on the opposite side of the goal or behind the centre line
Defenders may wear a face mask for the duration of a penalty corner. Those need to be removed when the defenders leave the circle. No player may be substituted for the duration of the penalty corner. Exeption is the keeper in case of injury or suspension.
As soon as the ball is played defenders and attackers can enter the circle Defender crosses back-line before permitted: defender goes beyond the centre line and cannot be replaced the PC is taken again Goalkeeper crosses goal-line before permitted: a defender is nominated to go beyond the centre line and cannot be replaced the PC is taken again Attacker enters the circle before permitted: attacker goes beyond the centre line and can be replaced the PC is taken again
A goal cannot be scored until the bal has travelled outside the circle. If the ball did not travel outside the circle, there is no offence but no valid goal can be awarded. The attacker can play the ball in the air for an attempt to score but dangerous play always need to be judged.
The PC is completed when: A goal is scored. The ball travels 3m outside the circle. An offence by the defenders or the attackers or the ball travels outside the pitch The ball travels a second time outside the circle (only for substitution and for completion at half-time and full-time) The match is prolounged at half-time and fulltime to allow the completion of a PC or any subsequent PC or penalty stroke.
Offence of defender in the circle Unintenional but preventing a goal (last man) Intentional (+ possibly personal penalty)
The time is stopped The ball is placed on the penalty spot Keeper must stand on the goal-line Attacker stands behind the ball (within playing distance) Blow whistle when both players are in position only then stroke can be taken. The stroke should be retaken when Attacker hits before whistle and goal is scored Keeper moves from the goal-line before the ball is hit and no goal is scored (warning: green card and subsequent offence: yellow card = suspension) The stroke is completed when A goal is scored goal The attacker makes an offence (double touch, feinting, non playable distance) free hit for defence When the ball goes over the back-line, comes at rest in the circle or goes outside the circle free hit for defence

Avoid giving twice the same card to a player for the same offence 1 st green card 2 nd yellow card 1 st yellow card 2 nd red card For a dubbel yellow card the player should leave the pitch but can stay with the team.
Start time Turn towards the other umpire with one arm straight in the air. Blow. Stop time Blow. Turn towards the other umpire and cross fully-extended arms at the wrists above the head.
Ball over the side-board Indicate the direction with one arm raised horizontally. No need to blow unless confusion.
Ball over the back-line by attacker Face the centre of the pitch and extend both arms horizontally sideways.
Long corner Point one arm at the pitch corner nearest where the ball crossed the back-line
Penalty Corner (PC) Point both arms horizontally towards the goal.
Goal scored Point both arms horizontally towards the centre of the pitch. Re-start after goal scored Turn towards the other umpire with one arm straight in the air. Blow.
Misconduct and/or bad temper Stop play and and make a calming movement by moving both hands slowly up and down, palm forward, in front of the body. Free push Indicate the direction with one arm raised horizontally.
Advantage Extend one arm high from the shoulder in the direction in which the benfiting team is playing. Penalty stroke Point one arm at the penalty stroke spot and the other straight up in the air. This signal means time is stopped.
3m distance Extend one arm straight up in the air showing open hand with all fingers extended. Bully Move hands alternately up and down in front of the body with palms facing each other.
Obstruction Hold crossed forearms in front of the chest Third party or shadow obstruction Alternately open and close crossed forearms in front of the chest
Kick Slightly raise a leg and touch it near the foot or ankle with the hand Back stick Move the hand over the other hand with palms facing down.
Stick hit Make a hit movement with one hand on the other forearm. Sticks Put arm in a 90 angle next to the body in the air and make a circular movement with the hand.
Dangerous play Place one arm diagonally across the chest. Stick obstruction Hold on arm out and donwnwards in front of the body half-way between vertical and horizantal; touch the the forearm with the other hand
