Hello and welcome to our final Go fishing newsletter of the year. As the sun sets once again on our trout fishing year, we will be looking back at some of your outstanding catches over the last season. As well as looking back, we will also be looking forward to 2012. It will be our pleasure to welcome you again at the start of the new season on Saturday 10 March 2012. After an excellent production year on our own fish farms, we are planning to start the new season with a big bang as these extra fish will be used to boost pre-season stocking numbers on our waters. Also in this edition, it is our pleasure to welcome back world famous tackle dealers Hardy & Greys and, who once again have provided two very interesting articles. Finally, we would like to thank you for your valued custom throughout the 2011 season and wish you a fantastic Christmas and a very happy new year. Please keep sending your feedback, stories and pictures. Who knows, you may find yourself featured in the next issue. Contact us by calling 0845 155 0236 or email your stories and pictures to go.fishing@nwl.co.uk. Making the most of winter Nick Hart Pack a flask of hot soup, sling a big net over your shoulders and go searching for crocodiles! Caution and a pair of long nose forceps will facilitate the removal of a barbless hook when you find your quarry which should be returned with great care. Pike are particularly susceptible to poor handling. If this all seems too far removed from your usual sedate trout fishing excursions then Grayling may represent your close season saviour. Stock up with plenty of pink shrimps which are a proven autumnal Grayling pattern and where possible employ the use of decent polarised sunglasses such as Costas to locate shoals of fish. As the nights draw in and late autumn arrives many trout anglers hang up their waders for the year. Armchair angling is their only respite, helping to make the long close season a little more bearable. Fly tying, perhaps a club talk or the musings of an angling great bring to life our sport through the pages of self help manuals or poetic literature. But even the likes of Bailey, Geirach or Falkus are no substitute for the real thing. Trout need not be our only target with fly tackle and after all we only live once; so why not make best use of the time we have! Try a little late season salmon fishing - for many years it had appeared to me that this branch of our sport could in no way challenge the absorbing qualities of trout fishing. How wrong I was. Fly choice, leader length and depth were just as important. Do a little research and it is possible to find salmon fishing which extends well into November; the Tweed is a good example. Saltwater fly fishing is another option. Bass are certainly willing to take flies developed to represent bait fish if conditions allow and the late autumn represents the opportunity to tangle with a specimen fish. There can be few forms of fly fishing more exciting than casting from an exposed rock mark in stunning locations such as Ireland. Carry a light lure fishing outfit too just in case the wind proves problematic, although it is often possible to tuck away, sheltered by a deep water cove and enjoy endless hard fighting pollack if fly tackle is your preferred method. Another close-season species to try are pike which are found in all manner of venues including rivers, canals and lakes. These fish represent a chance of some good sport and the opportunity to tangle with a double figure wild fish. The Greys XF2 Carnivore has been specifically designed to throw large flies at toothy critters with ease. Connect a wire leader to a section of fluorocarbon using an Albright knot and fill your fly box with patterns boasting a strong silhouette and plenty of movement. Finally, small stillwater venues will come to life during the cooler months and can be tackled with light line equipment, even the kind we may use for river fishing. Make a day out more of a challenge by setting yourself some rules: stalking fish for example, or only fishing with dry flies, dedicating your time to short sessions during late morning and early afternoon when the fish will be most active. This is a great way to improve techniques, practice the latest tactics and even hone our casting skills. Nick Hart is an experienced angler and fishing guide, and a Hardy & Greys consultant. Past, present and future... Established over two years ago the Fishing For Everyone Ladies Fishing Club are celebrating the end of another successful years fishing. In this article club founder and chairman, talks about the past, present and future of the club. Looking back, it doesn t seem two minutes since I first established the Fishing For Everyone Ladies Fishing Club and I can still remember holding our first event almost as though it was yesterday. This year however has been a whirlwind of events and I can t believe we re now nearly into December! Having held at least one event every month this year, covering fishing for trout, mackerel and cod, including two junior specific events, and with an average of twenty anglers attending aged between eight years old and ladies in their seventies, there have been many highlights and achievements the club can reflect on. I d like to reflect on two events in particular that were extremely successful. Kicking the season off in April, we ran an exclusive club members only instructional event. Held at Hardy & Greys in Alnwick the exciting event was led by qualified AAPGAI instructors and Hardy & Greys academy members, Steve Peterson, Stevie Munn and Stephen Kennedy. The day was an opportunity for all club members to learn as much as possible about fish entomology, fly tying, making up leaders and their presentation, as well as one to one casting tuition covering different types of casting technique with some of the best instructors out there. Members were able to ask as many questions as they wished and following the day club member, Cat McGinty said: "A fantastic day - very informative and great fun! The three Stevie's were so helpful and are great instructors." In late June, we joined together with the Hirst Park Trout Ticklers to hold a joint mixed club competition at Fontburn Reservoir. Although we run a junior angling programme, this event gave our junior and adult members the opportunity to join together with another successful angling club to learn from each other and have some fishing fun. On the day the two clubs were split into mixed teams. During the morning session, the anglers were coarse fishing and during the afternoon we were fly fishing. Many FFE members had never coarse fished before and this event gave them the opportunity to try it. The events also gave both clubs the chance to fish together and meet new friends. At the end of the day a presentation was held and prizes given out to the best anglers on the day and everyone received a certificate. As well as holding various events, a major step in the right direction for us this year was the passing of the UKCC Game Angling Level 1 Coaching certificate by Carmelle Hook and Jenny Lindley. Achieving the qualification enables both ladies to assist with coaching at our events - not only is this great news for our club who will benefit gratefully but also for the whole sport of angling which has a distinct lack in the amount of female anglers who partake in it. Looking to the future it is my hope that we will continue to grow and develop for many years to come by offering female anglers the opportunity to try their hand at all different disciplines of fishing held in a safe and supportive environment. Finally, on behalf of the club I would like to thank all of our supporters and welcome any ladies or juniors interested in joining us next year to contact us. Tight lines, Lucy For more information on the Fishing For Everyone Ladies Fishing Club, please visit www.blog.fishingforeveryone.com or email lucy@fishingforeveryone.com. Alternatively visit LucyBowdenFFE on Twitter or on Facebook. The club committee will soon be working on our forthcoming 2012 programme and these will be announced early next year. 4
