Therefre, Camden Cunty Schls will implement an Emergency Respnse Netwrk and will equip each schl with an Autmated External Defibrillatr (AED). Designated staff members in each schl will be trained in CPR, First Aid, and AED use. This prtcl will serve as a guideline fr this prgram: 1. Training A. Designated staff members wh wrk in Camden Cunty Schls have successfully cmpleted training ffered by the American Heart Assciatin and/r the American Red Crss in CPR, First Aid, and AED use. B. Designated trained staff members shall maintain their credentials by participating in refresher training and recertificatin every tw years r as required by guidelines accrding t the American Red Crss r the American Heart Assciatin. C. N staff member will use the AED unless he/she has successfully cmpleted CRP, First Aid and AED training ffered by the American Heart Assciatin r American Red Crss. D. All training will be crdinated thrugh and dcumented by the prgram crdinatr. 2. Medical Oversight Medical versight fr the Camden Cunty Schls AED prgram has been secured with Albemarle Hspital in Elizabeth City, Nrth Carlina. Albemarle Hspital will be made aware f any AED events, all training activities, and assist with the develpment and review f plicies and prcedures regarding AED use. 3. Event Respnse and Prtcl In the event f a cardiac arrest n the premises: A. Critical Steps f an Event Respnse *The device is indicated fr emergency treatment f victims exhibiting symptms f sudden cardiac arrest wh are unrespnsive and nt breathing. 1. Assess patient s level f cnsciusness (tap and shut in bth ears, Are yu OK? ) 2. Assess Airway by head-tilt, chin-lift methd. 3. Assess Breathing 3 5 secnds. 4. Assess Pulse at least 10 secnds. 5. If n pulse, call 911 r have smene else call 911. 6. Open AED case t activate the AED. 7. Apply electrde pads t chest as prmpt directs. Retyped 06/29/11 Page 1
Sectin 2.6.2 (Reg.) *If patient is under 8 years f age r weighs less than 55 punds, use Pediatric Electrde pads prvided. Therapy shuld nt be delayed t determine patient s exact age r weight. 8. Rescuer wh applies the electrde pad shuld lk fr: Wet skin Dry with twel. Transdermal Medicatin Patch with glved hand remve patch and wipe ff medicatin with a twel and discard. Implantable Pacemakers r Defibrillatrs DO NOT place electrde pad directly ver implanted device. Cautin if patient is lying in water remve t a dry area t avid further injury. 9. If there is a delay in applying the electrde pads, begin CPR. 10. Plug in electrdes t AED if nt already dne. 11. Once the AED begins t ANALYZE and gives the stand clear f patient, make sure n ne is in cntact with the patient. Stp CPR if in prgress. 12. If SHOCK indicated, AED will autmatically deliver a shck; cntinue this cycle until delivery f 3 defibrillatin pulses are given. 13. If during this cycle the AED detects a heart rhythm that des nt require defibrillatin, and then the vice prmpt will say: Check fr breathing. If nt breathing, give patient tw breaths. The next vice prmpt issues will be, Check fr signs f circulatins, if n signs f circulatin, start CPR. If a pulse is present, and n breathing, begin Rescue Breathing (1 breath every 5 secnds). If bth pulse and breathing are present and the patient is still uncnscius, then psitin patient in the Recvery Psitin n left side r maintain head-tilt, chinlift t keep airway pen. 14. Cntinue sequence recmmended by AED until: N shckable rhythm is detected r until ambulance persnnel arrive n the scene. 15. If patient regains cnsciusness, leave electrdes in place and make patient as cmfrtable as pssible until ambulance arrives. *The AED will nt advise t defibrillate all pulseless patients. Sme cardiac rhythms d nt respnd t defibrillatin. Retyped 06/29/11 Page 2
Sectin 2.6.2 (Reg.) B. Initial EMS Respnse Prir t Defibrillatin If Emergency Medical Services (EMS) persnnel arrive BEFORE the Defibrillatin prtcl is cmplete; the AED Rescuer will cntinue the prtcl as directed by the AED until EMS persnnel acknwledge that they are assuming respnsibility fr further treatment f the patient. Upn arrival f EMS persnnel, the AED Rescuer shuld begin a dialgue briefing n: - The patient s cnditin - What AED interventin has ccurred thus far - Any ther infrmatin requested 4. Pst-Event Prcess A. Pst Event Review After use f AED, replace the fllwing: Electrde pads (check date f electrdes) Glves Pcket mask, r ne-way valve (when applicable) Razr (if necessary) Check the battery fuel gauge t assure sufficient battery life Clse lid f AED and ensure the status indicatr is GREEN Retrieve rescue data and frward t Oversight Physician and AED Prgram Crdinatr. *The AED Rescuer wh has used the AED is respnsible fr ntifying the prgram crdinatr. The prgram crdinatr will restck the unit with the prper accessries prir t returning it t service. B. Event Data Cllectin 1. The AED saves event data and regardless f whether a shck was delivered, it shuld be secured in a lcked filing cabinet until the Prgram Crdinatr can retrieve the data. 2. The AED Prgram Crdinatr shuld be ntified as sn as pssible f an AED event. Retyped 06/29/11 Page 3
