BOSTON RED SOX (35-41) at SEATTLE MARINERS (40-36) Monday, June 23, 2014 10:10 p.m. ET Safeco Field, Seattle, WA RHP John Lackey (8-4, 2.96) vs. RHP Felix Hernandez (8-2, 2.22) Game #77 Road Game #38 TV: NESN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) YESTERDAY S GAME: The Red Sox defeated the Athletics yesterday in Oakland, 7-6 in 10 innings, to avoid being swept in 4 games...ahead 6-1, the Sox allowed 3 runs in the 8th and then 2 in the 9th on a pair of solo homers off Koji Uehara...David Ortiz went deep in the top of the 10th and Uehara retired the bottom of the frame in order for the win. STATE OF THE SOX: Yesterday s win snapped a 3-game losing streak, which followed 3 straight wins...the Sox have taken 6 of their last 11, 7 of their last 13, and 8 of their last 15 contests beginning on 6/8. The Sox are in 4th place in the AL East, 6.5 games back in the division, and are 5.0 games back in the race for the AL s 2nd Wild Card playoff berth. Boston is 34 days and 33 games (15-18) into a stretch from 5/20-6/25 in which the club plays 36 games in 37 days...their only off-day in this time was on 6/5. TIGHT GAMES: Each of the Red Sox last 9 games have been decided by 2 runs or less...in this stretch the Sox have gone 4-5 and have been outscored just 22-24. This marks the club s longest single-season streak of games decided by no more than 2 runs since the last 9 games of the 2000 season...their last longer streak was a 10-gamer from 9/12-20/97. The Sox have dropped 12 games in June, including 5 by 1 run and 3 by 2 runs...the Sox trailed by 2 runs or less at some point in the 7th inning or later in all but 2 of their 12 losses this month. RAZOR THIN: Of the club s last 9 games, 8 have been decided by just 1 run, with the Sox going 4-4 in those contests. Boston has played an AL-high 29 1-run games this year, going 12-17 in those contests...in the majors, only Pittsburgh has played more 1-run games (32). The Sox 17 1-run losses are the most among AL teams and rank 2nd in the majors to the Mets (18). ROAD RUNNING: The Sox continue a season-long-tying 10-game road trip today with the 5th of 7 games on the west coast...bostond took 1 of 4 in Oakland to open the series and plays the first of 3 in Seattle tonight...after an off-day on Thursday, they visit the Yankees for 3 games. This road trip completes a 28-day, 26-game stretch (6/2-29) over which the Sox were slated for only 7 games in Boston, all in the just-completed homestand. HERO AGAIN: David Ortiz hit the deciding home run last night, a go-ahead shot in the 10th inning...of his 17 home runs this season, 7 have given the Sox a lead, and 2 have tied the game. Each of his last 3 homers have provided the gametying or go-ahead run in the final inning of a Red Sox win: 9th-inning go-ahead 3-run HR on 6/8 at DET; 10th-inning game-tying solo HR on Wednesday vs. MIN; 10th-inning go-ahaed solo HR yesterday at OAK. According to Elias, it was the 10th extra-inning home run of Ortiz s regular season career (also has 2 in postseason play)...among active players, only Albert Pujols (14) has as many extra-inning home runs. MATCHUP OF THE MONTH: Tonight s starters Felix Hernandez and John Lackey have the 2nd- and 3rd-best ERAs in the AL over the last month (beginning 5/23), respectively... In that time, Hernandez is at 1.17 and Lackey is at 1.60... Only TB s Chris Archer (1.03) has a better ERA since 5/23. Lackey, who threw 9.0 scoreless innings last time out on Wednesday vs. MIN, has allowed no runs in 3 of his 6 starts over the last month beginning on 5/23. SCORING CHANGE: Official scorer Bob Ellis made a scoring change to the Red Sox game on 6/18 vs. MIN...In the bottom of the 7th inning David Ortiz reached on a ground ball which was originally scored an error by 1B Joe Mauer... This has been changed to a single. SOX AND M S: Tonight the Sox open a 4-game series with the Mariners at Safeco Field, their 1st game against the M s since 8/1/13...The 2 clubs will close out their 6-game season series with 3 games in Boston from 8/22-24. The Sox took 5 of 6 games against the Mariners last year to claim the season set against Seattle for the 4th straight year and 5th time in the last 6 seasons. The Sox won their last 6 games against the Mariners in 2013, outscoring them 51-32 in those contests... It marks the club s longest win streak against Seattle since a 10-gamer from 8/30/91-5/20/92. NAVIGATING MARINERS: The Red Sox are 226-163 (.581) all-time against the Mariners, the top winning percentage for any American League club against Seattle since the Mariners 1st season in 1977. MOUND MATTERS: Boston ranks 2nd in the AL with a at 2.85 ERA in 26 games dating back to 5/27, trailing only Seattle (2.77)...Overall this season, the Sox rank 3rd in the AL with a 3.62 ERA, trailing OAK (3.02) and SEA (3.27), Boston s first 2 opponents on the current road trip. Boston s bullpen has the 2nd-lowest ERA in the AL at 2.88, trailing only the Mariners (2.74). The club s 46 quality starts this year are tied with KC for 2nd in the AL behind only OAK (49). STARTING ROLL: Sox starters have allowed 3 ER or less in a season-long 11 straight games beginning on 6/12... Club starters are 4-1 with a 2.06 ERA (17 ER/74.1 IP) in that time...this stretch has lowered the team s starters ERA from 4.35 on 6/11 to its current 3.98 mark. ON THE OFFENSE: Boston s 7 runs scored in 10 innings yesterday are almost half of the club s 15 total runs scored over their previous 8 games between yesterday and their last output of at least 7 runs, a 10-3 win on 6/13 vs. CLE. The Sox have drawn the AL s 3rd-most walks (273) and are tied for the 4th-most times on base (941) but have scored 291 runs, tied with HOU for 2nd fewest in the AL, ahead of only TB (284). The Sox are seeing 4.03 pitches/pa, 2nd most in the majors to MIN (4.07)...They have reached base a MLB-leading 413 times on 2-strike counts. THE RIGHT FIGHT: The Red Sox have won 5 of their last 7 games when facing a right-handed starter despite a 21-28 (.429) overall record this season when opposing a righty. The club this year is 14-13 (.519) when facing a lefty starter but has lost its last 6 games started by LHPs. BROCK FROM THE TOP: In 1 month since Brock Holt was installed as the Red Sox leadoff hitter on 5/23, the rookie leads all major leaguers with 43 hits...he has played all 285 innings of Boston s 30 games in that time while making starts at 5 different positions (1B, 3B, LF, CF, RF). He has reached base safely via hit, walk, or HBP in 28 of his 31 total leadoff starts this season overall, and has a.328 AVG (45-for-137) from the top spot. His.326 AVG overall this season leads all MLB rookies with at least 100 PA, and ranks 6th among all AL batters with at least 175 PA this season. STREAK SNAPPED: Koji Uehara earned the win yesterday despite suffering his 1st blown save in 16 chances this season...it was the 1st time Uehara allowed multiple runs in any game -- save opportunity or not, regular or postseason -- since being named Red Sox closer on 6/21/13...Overall he went 94 outings (regular and postseason) spanning over one full year from 6/10/13-6/21/14 allowing 2 runs or less. It snapped Uehara s streak of converting 31 straight regular season save chances beginning on 7/9/13... This had been the majors longest active save streak (now Huston Street, 20), and ranks as the 2nd-longest save streak in club history behind Tom Gordon s ALrecord 54 straight from 4/19/98-5/31/99.
