Champs...KC is 4-5 in games played here at Comerica Park this season...the Royals lead the all-time ledger by a slim 305-301 margin, with a 145-160 deficit in Detroit, including 58-68 at Comerica Park. Wild Card leaders, Tampa Bay and Texas, who enter today with identical 81-66 marks. RUBBER GAME #16--Today s game will be the fourth rubber game between KC and the Tigers this year, with KC taking 2 of the previous 3...the Royals earned series-deciding wins at The K on June 12 with a 3-2 come-from-behind win in 10 innings as well as a 5-2 triumph a week ago today in KC...Detroit s 6-3 win here on August 18 clinched the expanded 5-game series for the Tigers...this is the Royals 16th rubber game of the season, with Kansas City posting a 9-6 record to this point, including 5-5 on the road. ANOTHER CLOSE CALL--Last night was Kansas City s 51st one-run decision, with the Royals posting a 28-23 ledger, the second highest total in the American League behind only the White Sox (53)...the Tigers have been a huge contributor to KC s one-run work this year as last night s victory was the ninth single-run decision between these clubs, with KC going 7-2 in those affairs. TAMING THE TIGERS--Kansas City s thrilling win last night not only improved its standing in the American League playoff picture, it also clinched the first winning season against the Tigers since 2008, when the Royals went 11-7 against their divisional rival...kc is 10-8 against Detroit this season with today s game the final scheduled meeting between the two clubs. STAFF MAINTAINS TOP ERA--Ervin Santana and the KC bullpen blanked Detroit on seven hits as the Royals held onto the American League lead in ERA at 3.51, bettering Oakland in the No. 2 spot at 3.59...should the club be able to maintain its earned run average over the final 14 games of the season, it would be the lowest by a Royals team since the World Champion club posted a 3.49 ERA in 1985. TRIBE AHEAD--Kansas City will embark on its final homestand of the regular season when A.L. Central Division rival Cleveland opens a three-game series at The K, beginning Monday at 7:10 p.m...its the final scheduled series between the clubs, which entered play today seperated by 2 games in the standings, as both chase a postseason berth...kc is 7-9 against the Indians this year, but hold a 4-3 edge in games played at Kauffman Stadium.
