VALLEY GARDENS OVERNIGHT SKI & SNOWBOARD TRIP

Transcription:

December 2015 Happy December to everyone! Let the snow fly. This past month we were visible at the YMCA s Ski Swap on the east side of Green Bay. Many thanks to Mary Halloin for manning our table for the event. Thanks also to Paul Hendricks and Mary Lou Kuske who helped her out. By the amount of brochures we passed out, quite a few people had an interest in us. Unfortunately, Rick Huston has to step down as our Secretary. He has quite a few out-of-town plans for the next couple of months. Tom Piette, who is currently our Historian, has agreed to fill Rick s shoes for the remainder of the term. I would like to thank Rick for all of his contributions and hard work! You will notice a change in our Trip Sign-Up Form. We have included a check-box for a nonskier under each mid-west trip labeled No Lift Pass. This will help the trip leaders in determining how many lift tickets to purchase for the Gelandesprung Gazette JULIE S JIVE Going Downhill since 1969! www.gelandesprung.org P.O. Box 10422, Green Bay, WI 54307-0422 trip. If you have sent in your Trip Sign-Up Form, you do not need to send in another one. This form can be used moving forward for future payments. Please contact me at president@gelandesprung.org with any questions. While getting your skis, boot bags and jackets ready for the season, don t forget to cut the Emergency Contact Information card out from the newsletter and put that in your ski jacket pocket. This card can be very helpful for the ski patrol if you have been separated from your friends and something happens to you. This month we have our 1st Pretrip meeting on December 29th for the Lutsen/Spirit Mountain trip. That night we will also be celebrating the Holidays. We will have free hors d oeuvres and beverages for everyone. Even if you are not planning on going to Lutsen, please stop out and join us for some Holiday Cheer! Lutsen/Spirit Mt. Avoid Passport Pitfalls When traveling to an international destination most people know that a U.S. passport is required to enter an international destination. A lesser-known requirement for some countries is that they require your U.S. passport be valid not only for the duration of your visit, but also for three to six months after your entry or return from their country. This is known as the six month rule. This means you should check your passport expiration date carefully. This rule is in place so that if the un-expecting visitor needs to stay for a period up to six month his/her passport would be valid to leave the country. If your passport is about to expire it is recommended that you renew your passport nine (9) months before your passport expires. A good source of up-to-date information about passport validity is the U.S. Department of State s travel website (travel.state.gov), which lists entry requirements by country. Don t let your next international trip get tripped up by a passport fiasco. You can get a passport renewed in 4-6 weeks by routine processing at a cost of $110, or 2-3 weeks with expedited service at an additional cost of $60. This year a trip is planned for Whistler in British Columbia, Canada. Canada does not enforce the six-month rule. However, you should check your passport expiration date to be sure it doesn t expire before returning to the USA. Your vacation could be ruined before you even get started. Basic requirements for entering Canada: - have a valid passport, - be in good health, - have no criminal or immigration-related convictions. If you have any Helpful Tips you want to share with the GSC members, please forward them to newsletter@gelandesprung.org. These tips can be anything you feel would help out skiers/boarders. Mary Halloin and Paul Hendricks at the 45th Annual Green Bay Y Ski & Sport Sale Dan Goudreau at Zeller s Annual Ski & Snowboard Consignment Sale Vail and Beaver Creek Third Largest Shuttle-Connected North American Resort for 2015-2016 Vail is 5,200 acres of skiing paradise for all levels of skiers! The better skiers should check out the Back Bowls, Blue Sky Basin, and Game Creek Bowl. There are seven on-mountain dining facilities (including Two Elk,) and three base area (Vial Village, Lionshead, and Golden Peak). Plus there s a lift from the Cascade Hotel, located midway between Vail Village and Lionshead. Vail s base areas boast more fur shops than most resorts have T-shirt shops and no one should leave town without checking out Wild Game, one of the most famous après-ski venues in America to see and be seen. Beaver Creek Ski Resort was designed as an upscale resort to accompany its sister resort, Vail, which was already one of the most upscale resorts in the U.S.! It s just 13 miles west of Vail, and was opened for the 1980-1981 ski season. They then purchased nearby Arrowhead Ski Area four years later and built the Bachelor Gulch to connect the two areas. Beaver Creek s 1,832 acres has three terrain parks, two bowls, seven kids adventure zones, a vertical rise of 3,340 feet, and it is serviced by 25 lifts. The area has 150 named trails -- including the famous Birds of Prey mogul runs (Peregrine, Kestrel, Goshawk, Bald Eagle, etc.) on Grouse Mountain. Beaver Creek s base area has two escalators to access the slopes, a skating rink, lots of dining, and rather upscale shopping. Vail is 38 miles from Breckenridge and Keystone so, taking advantage of the EpicPass, several clubs are offering pre- or post-trips to those resorts on their Vail and/or Beaver Creek trips.
