IN & AROUND BY COL(RET) RICHARD LOONG Hello Everyone! GM's Message Dear Members, First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy 2019 and thank you for your unwavering support of the Club. I believe that in the coming year, the Club will continue to perform well on the golfing, social and services fronts, given the positive responses we received in the past year. To kick-start the Lunar New Year, we will be holding the well-loved golf event, Fa Cai Golf on 16 February 2019. Expect lots of fun on the course (not forgetting prizes for all winners) and entertainment from the lively Lion Dance troupe with its breathtaking acrobatic performance of the Cai Qing ( Plucking the Greens ) ceremony symbolising good fortune. In other words, come join the celebration on 16 February and soak up the new year atmosphere. You will never have a dull moment. Recently, the Green Committee conducted a Rules of Golf Workshop on 13 December 2018 that provided an overview of the major changes to the rules. The aim of the workshop was to build awareness and ease the transition to the modernised/new set of rules. Following this workshop, members should be able to tackle the course with confidence when the rules take effect on 1st January 2019. As always, the Club s golfing and social events in the past quarter garnered much positive response from our members. Read on to find out more Chiangmai Golf 2018 22 of our members went on a golfing trip to Chiangmai, Thailand from 3rd to 7th October 2018 and enjoyed golfing at 4 breathtakingly scenic courses Chiangmai Highland, Alpine Golf Resort, Summit Green Valley and Maejo Golf Course. Everyone had a great game with the weather in their favour and on the last day, headed to Good View Village restaurant for a farewell dinner. It was a memorable trip for all participants, who looked forward to going back again. SCC & Tiara Melaka Friendly Game On 3 November 2018, SCC hosted the SCC & Tiara Melaka Friendly Game on home ground. Before teeing-off, golfers from Tiara Melaka were treated to a lunch featuring local flavours like seafood fried rice. The game was a highly enjoyable one and prizes were awarded to participants from both clubs. Besides bonding over a scrumptious dinner, participants enjoyed a lively karaoke session and music from a live band. Deepavali Golf 2018 Deepavali Golf, held on 17 November 2018, was a very enjoyable event attended by 76 participants, packed with lots of good food, entertainment and goody bags for all. Blessed with great weather, everyone completed the game that was played in a 2-man scramble format. Classical Indian dances by 3 beautiful dancers and well-loved hits by a pop band accompanied an exquisite dinner of Indian cuisine. Adding to this were a fun-filled dance session and karaoke session where members sang to their hearts content. 02

IN & AROUND BY COL(RET) RICHARD LOONG Christmas Golf 2018 Christmas Golf 2018 was the last event for the year, and a successful one. Thanks to excellent weather, members were able to finish their golf game. In celebration of the festive occasion, participants received lots of goodies such as chocolates, candies, and Christmas hats to wear during play. Some members were even dressed in Christmas attire! All were treated to a generous spread of Christmas specials and enjoyed the highlight of the night an entertaining dance by SCC staff to the hit song, DESPACITO. The day concluded with a prize presentation for all winners of the golf game. It was an enjoyable event for all, and we are glad for the good response. Club Improvements Facilities In our continuing efforts to improve our facilities and ensure safety of our members, the Club had undertaken several upgrading works, such as widening the staircase leading to the buggy parking area from Golfers Terrace (GT), clubhouse roof repair and refurbishment of our Mahjong Rooms. As we speak, the Club has begun the upgrading of its Wifi and Broadband network, and the installation of an LED text display board at the GT to inform golfers of the weather status/ CAT 1. I am positive that these improvements will allow our members to enjoy more pleasant moments at the Club. Department. Congratulations to all of them! Thank you for your nominations, compliments and feedback. Your encouraging words will certainly spur our staff to do their best and take pride in their work, so keep them coming. We will be glad to know how we can serve you better. Ang Pow Contribution Every year, we ask Members to give an Ang Pow contribution in celebration of the Lunar New Year, and in appreciation for the service that the Club Staff has given to them. This contribution is collected and distributed evenly among all our Staff. Allow me to thank you all for your contributions, and for your generosity and support you have shown to us! Conclusion 2018 has been a fruitful year that saw the Club embarking on various initiatives and upgrading projects to engage members and make visits to the Club enjoyable. Over the next few months, members can look forward to an exciting series of social and golfing programmes to complete the unique SCC experience. Do continue to check out our website, noticeboards and social media to keep yourself updated on the events we offer. I am confident that Year 2019 will be another exciting year for SCC and thank you for being part of the SCC family. See you soon! Staff Excellence Award (Oct to Dec 2018) It is my pleasure to announce the winners for the quarter of October to December 2018: Sumthram and Shanmugah from the Golfing Department, Kumar (Individual Award) and John, Sawal, James, Muntaha (Group Award) from the Operations 03

CAPTAIN'S COLUMN BY ME7 TEH CHONG ANN Hi Guys and Gals, Happy New Year! New Year, new resolutions, and new rules. Our New Year resolution is to make sure that we are very clear of these new rules because there are already many people asking about them (we are considering burning the new rule book and drinking the trusty golden rules). We have organized a rules workshop where we get the professionals from SGA to explain the whys and the hows, and we had a good attendance for the day, so we are quite confident that you guys are well-equipped (err, if not I will ask why you did not attend the workshop). Just to be triply sure, we have attached the new Local Rules on page 8. Recently we had to suspend a member due to dangerous play, whereby a shot was hit while the players in front are in range. This is necessary but it is definitely not an enjoyable thing for us to do. We would strongly urge every golfer to play with the benefit of doubt that you may hit your best shot ever and reach the distance that would make your flight mates go speechless (and not because you are getting into trouble). Especially on hole 17, where the approach to the green ~150m away is blind, do make the effort to drive up to confirm that the players are out of your range before taking your shot (you know we have been improving the sand capping of the course to enable you to drive on most instances to enable you to check readily). Having said that, I would like to assure all that we are always looking out at other means to better help golfers to prevent occurrence of dangerous play. Let s look forward to a better golfing experience for all of us, including any guests that are playing in our course. We ve also attached a calendar of events in our January GC update, to help you plan your leave so that you don t miss out on the wonderful golf events organized specially for all of you. We have been receiving many positive feedbacks on the golfing events and I am sure the golfing department is super motivated to make sure every other event will be just as enjoyable! So we hope to see more of you at the events, and together we will make them a bigger success! To a great new 2019! Happy golfing! ME7 Teh Chong Ann Club Captain 04

LADIES CORNER 03/18 SCC Ladies Cohesion- 15 Dec 2018 Highlight - Friendly game with Ladies from Warren GCC ME5 Emily Lee Tis the season to be Jolly! 15 Dec 2018 saw a total of 40 ladies from Sembawang CC and Warren GCC gathered for a fun filled day of challenge: from golf game to brain teaser at night with lots of Merrymaking ahead of the Christmas Festive Celebration! As evident from their smiles, the wet weather did not dampen their spirits! On the contrary, many were joyful that Happy Hour started early! With SCC members dressed in RED and Warren dressed in GREEN, the Club members were undeniably filled with Christmas mood with all the chatters at the Golfers Terrace! Happy Hour even started early, proving that their spirits were not dampened by the Cat 1! Glittering evening. The after-game party was a simple yet classic glittering theme to complement the early celebration of Christmas. A simple dining of the SCC signature Laksa and DIY Popiah went surprisingly well, as the turkey and honey-baked ham proved to be quite an exquisite mix of the East meets West cuisine. Great work by OceanSpoon. 05

LADIES CORNER The winning pair from both clubs The winning pa rom both clubs The game format was set as Double Peoria to be more friendly. Besides the usual novelty of nearest the pin and nearest the line, each club was awarded with the top 3 best pair as part of the fun challenge. Little did we know that the planned format was so friendly that Blind Pairing for Team of 4 even came to a TIE! Guess what, the childhood game of Scissors, Papers, Stone was used to determine the winning Team! Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas - So what is Christmas without Presents? A joke right! Hehe. A surprise entry by Santa Claus to distribute presents to every participant before the night ends makes the ladies goes Bananas! Lo and behold, the room was filled with screams and shouts for Santa s attention. This Santa Really Rocks! Well he s a Jolly Good Fellow LOL. 06

RULES OF GOLF 2019 SEMBAWANG WORKSHOP As 1st January approaches, it s time to consider what New Year resolutions you ll be making to help your golf game in 2019. For those who haven t come up with any, here s a suggestion: Learn the Rules of Golf. There s no better time than now to give it a shot because a new, modernized version of the rules goes into effect on New Year s Day. The USGA and R&A have reorganized the rules to make them easier to understand and apply. The number has been cut to 24 from 34, and the language simplified to make it more practical. If you didn t manage to attend Sembawang s Rules of Golf Workshop on December 13, here are the topics discussed: 1. No penalty if you accidentally move your ball (or ball marker) on the green. Put the ball back, and you re good to go. The same applies if you re searching for a lost ball and mistakenly move it. 2. Golfers may fix a ball mark on the green, spike mark without a penalty. You can also touch the line of your putt with your hand or club so long as you re not improving it. 3. To improve pace of play, golfers now have just three minutes to search for a missing ball rather than five. 4. The process for dropping a ball back in play is revamped in the new rules. Instead of letting go from shoulder height, players will drop from around their knee. 5. When hitting a ball into a water hazard (now defined as penalty area ), you re free to touch/ move loose impediments and ground your club, eliminating any unnecessary worry. You can remove loose impediments in bunkers, too, although touching the sand in a bunker in front of or behind the ball is still prohibited. 6. Now you can play a club that has become damaged in any fashion. If you caused the damage, however, you can t replace the club with a new one. 7. Golfers are now freed the embarrassment of adding a penalty for hitting a ball twice with one swing. It counts as only one stroke. 8. No penalty for hitting a flagstick left in the hole while putting on a green. Taking out and then placing back in flagsticks can often cause undue delay in the round. 9. Sembawang has implemented a Local Rule (not for competition) that offers an alternative to the stroke-and-distance penalty for lost balls or shots hit out-of-bounds. A player may drop a ball anywhere between where the original ball was believed to come to rest (or went outof-bounds) and just into the edge of the fairway, but no nearer the hole. The golfer takes a two-stroke penalty and plays on instead of returning to the tee. SCC Members attended the Rules of Golf Workshop 08

GREENS TALK Chiangmai Golf 2018 By Gai Ismail 22 members went on a golfing trip to Chiangmai, Thailand from 3rd to 7th October 2018 and had fun golfing at 4 breathtakingly scenic courses Chiangmai Highland, Alpine Golf Resort, Summit Green Valley and Maejo Golf Course. All had a great game with the weather in their favour. At Maejo Golf Club, members had the opportunity to pluck some pomelos which were in season. Lodging was at the well-located Dusit Princess Chiangmai hotel (think spacious and cosy rooms) flanked by a buzzing Pasar Malam (night market), various restaurants and massage places. Simply put, a shopping and dining haven. After a fun day out, Members were given a welcome dinner at a Seafood restaurant complete with lots of good food and entertainment. On the last day, everyone headed to Good View Village restaurant for a farewell dinner. It was an enjoyable trip and all look forward to coming back again. Say cheese! The weather is just perfect for a nice game of golf with your golf kakis Happy Members posting against a scenic backdrop of rolling hills and blue skies 09

GOLF TIPS Stop Swinging Harder and Start Swinging Smarter When you release the club is more important than hand speed By Mathew Rudy Golf Digest Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images ST LOUIS, MO - AUGUST 09: Club Professional Matt Dobyns plays a shot during the first round of the 2018 PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club on August 9, 2018 in St Louis, Missouri. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images) The PGA Championship is unique in that it awards a handful of spots in the field to accomplished club professionals teachers who thrive in regional and national competitions. In years past, prominent club pros like Claude Harmon (Butch's father) were consistently competitive, but in recent years, tour players have dominated the leader boards. But for a half-hour on Thursday, Long Island club pro Matt Dobyns turned that fact on its head. The 40-year-old head professional at Fresh Meadow Country Club birdied his first three holes to jump onto the first page of the leader board a familiar place for him at national club professional events. The long-hitting Dobyns is a two-time winner of the National PGA Professional Championship, and he has finished in the top ten of that event -which is the club pro qualifying event for the PGA Championship four times in seven starts. At 5-foot-10 and 210 pounds, Dobyns isn't the prototypical masher, which means examining his swing could well be a more valuable exercise for the weekend player than trying to copy Dustin Johnson or Brooks Koepka. "There's never been a bigger disconnect from the players on tour and the average weekend player," says Golf Digest 50 Best Teacher Mike Jacobs, who teaches down the road from Dobyns at Rock Hill Golf & Country Club in Manorville. " At the PGA, it's interesting because you can see your local pro compete with the stars on the tour. Matt Dobyns is a great one to watch because he really gets the most out of his swing in ways anybody can copy." 17

GOLF TIPS Most weekend players try to gain distance by making their hands go faster, which is actually a recipe for slower clubhead speed, says Jacobs. "I have a studio where I can do a full biomechanical analysis of a player's swing, and Matt has been in there to get measured," says Jacobs." The average player winds up so much to try to produce speed, and then throws everything into the downswing. A lot of amateurs actually have more hand speed than a tour player does at impact." The difference? The wrists only produce about 0.5 horsepower. A weekend player can generate 2 horsepower overall, while a tour player produces 5. "For the best players, the wrists are a conduit for the speed the body produces, not the main power generator," says Jacobs. "One thing Matt does really well along with the big hitters on the tour is get the speed out to the end of the club." For you, it means you should stop trying to create lag and worry more about releasing the club sooner in the downswing. "You need to release way earlier than you think, and way earlier than you would with your irons," says Jacobs. "There's a reason tour players look so effortless when they bomb it. It's because they really are getting more out of less. Efficiency is so much more useful than raw effort." Staff Excellence Award (1 Oct 2018-31 Dec 2018) We are pleased to announce the winners for the quarter of October to December 2018. Congratulations to all of them, and well done!
