1991: A total of 17.1 million running bales were ginned during the 1991 season, 14 percent above 1990 ginnings of 15.1 million bales. A combination of larger acreage and yields produced this increase. Ginnings generally lagged behind 1990's, partly due to the larger crop, but also because of weather related delays. Excessive rainfall in West Texas during the latter months of 1991, resulted in modules remaining in fields and extending the ginning season. Cotton Production (480-Pound Bales) 1991: All cotton production in the United States totaled 17.6 million bales in 1991, 14 percent above 1990 production. This output is the largest production since 1926 and the third largest on record. Upland cotton production, at 17.2 million bales, was 14 percent above the 1990 level. American-Pima production totaled 398,400 bales, up 11 percent from 1990. The area planted to all cotton totaled 14.1 million acres, a 14 percent increase from 1990. Yields for the U.S. averaged 652 pounds per acre, 18 pounds above 1990 and up 38 pounds from the yields realized in 1989. Harvested area, at 13.0 million acres, was up 10 percent from the previous year. Abandonment during 1991 totaled 8 percent compared with 5 percent in 1990. The larger abandonment was due to an October freeze in Texas which forced producers to abandon 14 percent of the acreage. The Texas-Oklahoma production, at 4.95 million bales, was down 7 percent from 1990. Plantings of the 1991 crop were later than normal in the Delta, due to excessive rainfall. Standing water caused some replanting, but the crop developed rapidly. Louisiana realized a record high production, and Mississippi's was the largest since 1948. Record high yields were established in both States-828 pounds in Louisiana and 888 pounds in Mississippi. Production in the Southeast increased 90 percent from the previous year's drought affected crop. Georgia and South Carolina set record high yields of 812 pounds and 786 pounds respectively. Western States' production declined 4 percent from the previous year to 3.51 million bales. The decline was due to a 7 percent decrease from 1990 in harvested acres. Cottonseed: Cottonseed production in 1991 totaled 6.93 million tons, up 16 percent from 1990. May 1992 40 NASS, USDA
